This is a debate section. What else are we supposed to do? It's not like you have to participate.

I don't think you're understanding what the OP is saying here. He doesn't mind the debates, just that why is this called the Philosophical Forum and yet only God vs atheism threads are the only popular ones when there's alot more to philosophy than just that.

There have been variations of this thread before. I don't believe it's going to stop as long as the major philosophies in the world are monotheistic religions and their most vocal opponents are staunch atheists.

in that case frued says you have mother issues.

But to the point, Marco, even if we aren't gonna lose members to Christianity, we can still turn the converted into heathens!

its win/win

its because for most human beings, organized religion is the closest they come to philosophy

Organized religion is a philosophy where you don't ask questions.

... So is it a philosophy?

Excellent point. Perhaps it could be considered a cheap knock-off. :P

Like 9/11 conspiracy theories. :huh

Organized religions usually come into existence because of questions, just when people are born into them does it not really count for that. And of course jnec would support anything that equated organized religion with such.

Hahaha... ever heard of playing the devil's advocate? I told you before: I don't think the government had anything to do with 9/11, but I do believe that they withheld information afterwards, and that their obsessive hush-ups were not right and that those who lost loved ones should have been allowed to know more. There was no reason for them to pull half of the shit they did.

In the way you describe it, no.

Philosphy is about asking yourself and other questions openly.
Not proving yourself right. :amuse

Meh... this is off-subject.

Has anyone considered stickying the whole atheist/theist debate threads so that no one makes any more of them?
Or making a sections solely for them?
Or... something?

Most of those debates actually start with something completely different. Without all the threads about theism, religion or the lack of such, the Philosophical forum would be pretty much dead.

These forums aren't that active anyway. It doesn't bother me because I tend not to participate in those debates. But sometimes the genuinely interesting threads get lost in the rest of the garbage, which can be annoying.

So, what interesting off-topic debate should we start out of this useless thread?

when i say that for most people organized religion is the closest they get to philosophy, what i mean is that organized religion in a sense gives them their "answers" to "life's mysteries" since all humans do ask questions even to themselves sometimes. even the most shallow and practical person still does get curious once in a while. so the presence of a catholic church or an islam, can help this kind of person feel at ease without having to go into too much effort or anything. most teenagers (the people who really enjoy a manga/anime like naruto usually) are at the stage of their intellectual lives where they are beginning to question religions, thats probably why we constantly have threads about religion in this section. plus, philosophy as such is an academic subject taught not until university level, which not many people on NF have reached, so there isnt really enough knowldge level for a real philosophy discussion to begin with

Okay let's discuss......the faults of christianity does that make you feel better?

Or maybe we should talk about monotheism vs polytheism?

So, Marco, at some point when you entered the Café you must have read the rules, right?

Granted you did (I can't imagine why not) you would obviously have detected that this would be a forum in which very controversial topics would be brought up and, Lord forbid it, be discussed.

How exactly do you expect anyone in the philosophical department deal with your sort of thread, bearing in mind what the forum rules about this department say?

Moreover, we have enough of threads on this topic, so I'll close this one and direct you here (http://forums.narutofan.com/showthread.php?t=280427), the one true thread dealing with this topic.
