I agree part of his appeal is because is a loner, but I think he is a loner who has loved team members in the past (I'm only up to episode 99, so I don't really know anything about his past yet) who have died and doesn't want to be deeply hurt again. Can anyone who mourns and respects the dead be a "stone cold killah"? Someone who knows and respects the cost of death is even more impressive in my mind when they do kill since they know the emotional pain killing causes.

Ok, maybe what I'm trying to get at is you can kill and still be capable of love and affection. He isn't in ANBU anymore, so maybe he is getting more emotionally complex--could the ANBU days have been a period of emotional ice, feel nothing, to protect the hurt inside?

Have you talked to any Vietnam Vets who have done a lot of killing like ANBU, but now are totally different--of course with Post-traumatic stress-disorder? Anyway, Kakashi reminds me a little of some of the vets I've talked to. He's dealing with the hell of being a killer and living on the edge by escaping into teaching, protection, and romance novels with lots of sex.

I know it's pretty embarrassing to be so old and into Naruto, but a student of mine wanted to write a paper on it and lent me dubbed episodes 1 to 99 just a few weeks ago. I'm totally addicted now--I'm waiting for my new dvd collection to come from ebay and hanging around here to feed my need for Naruto--my old friends think I'm ridiculous . . .

Thanks for the tips on the manga--I'll look into downloading them and checking it out. I agree Kakashi can kill with no qualm, but I think that what makes him different from Orochimuru and the old Gaara is that he can still feel emotions and knows the cost of killing.

I agree with you. The mask makes his hair look even better than without it. I also thinks he's got the coolest hairstyle in the series.
