I don't think so. The demon fox was the most powerful creature in the Naruto Universe. Even if, Konoha had many talented Ninjas and clans, they could not stop it. The demon Fox chakra was unlimited so had no choice but to use that technique.

Now back to the question; If I were Yondaime, I would have done the same except earlier, I would have been prepared for the worst and develop a complicated Jutsu. Perhaps, improve the Ransegan. But I wouldn't have put it in my son. I would have let the death god eat it.

If I was the Yondaime would I have done anything different? Nope.

The Kyuubi is a living mass of Chakra. You can't physically injure it. The only way to defeat it was to seal it.

I would grab my wife and son and run for my life, screw the village. In the lattest chapters it has been shown that Minato sealed the Kyuubi in Naruto to fight Akatsuki/Tobi/Madara, well in my mind this was very short sighted of Minato. What right did he have to seal a monster in a child and ruin his whole life? It's almost as bad as the Sasuke's revenge, "okay son, I lost in battle to an evil force and I want you to be the one who brings this evil down."

Naruto hasn't even met Tobi, and it's very likly that Sasuke might bring him down. Sealing the Kyuubi in Naruto is looking very pointless at this point. Unless there is some other great evil out there besides Madara who could summon Kyuubi, but that seams unliky.
