GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Hospital officials in Gainsville have admitted error in the death of a 3-year-old.

Sebastian Ferrero died Oct. 10 from a medication overdose. That was two days after a routine test was supposed to help doctors determine why the boy's growth was below average.

Instead of receiving the prescribed dose of 5.75 grams of the amino acid arginine, officials said the Shands Medical Outpatient Pharmacy gave him more than 60 grams.

An official with the UF pediatrics department said they take full responsibility for the boy's death. Dr. Donald Novak said the boy showed signs of distress while he received the medication through a catheter, and the procedure was halted. But it was continued after a doctor examined the boy.

A pharmacist and a nurse involved in the case have been placed on administrative leave. A moratorium has been instituted on all infusion procedures at all UF clinics until a quality assessment and new patient safety measures are implemented.

The Gainesville Sun reported that the family reached an out-of-court settlement with the hospital. A family spokesman said their concern now is that steps are taken so this doesn't happen to someone else's child in the future.

It's not like they can sue for the kids life. He's dead. Maybe they want the money for expenses like for his funeral, or other things. Just because they're going to sue for money doesn't mean they're not sad about their child.

Agreed if had a 3 year old child and it died i would not go cry for ever and leave the hospital alone. Its called taking action i am sure they cant afford a funeral real easy ya know money dont grow on trees that why they sue.

Lawsuits do serve some purpose other than just 'getting money'. It's also a form of punishment and to let the people involved know that they are responsible and accountable for their actions.

I agree that an indemnity should be paid, but sometimes in medicine, mistakes happen. It's not an exact science and unfortunately wrong decisions are often fatal decisions, but unless it can be determined that the death is a result of neglect (as opposed to a mistaken yet nevertheless well-considered opinion), to try and get $80 million USD (or some other absurd figure) out of the hospital is just unfair.

Them damn Doctors call themselves doctors? Man I would have more sense than that. And I might be the most dumbest fuck on here. If I was them parents, Id go kick the doctor in the nuts, And give the nurse a big old fashioned titty twister.

Just despicable. Because some idiots weren't paying attention, a little boy had to die. These pointless deaths always anger me the most.

The problem I have isn't the issue of a mathematical error. Last I checked though 60g normally is a lot more than 5.75g simply in terms of volume. Someone wasn't paying attention.

That is ridiculous!!!

Criminal negligence might very well be a factor as well, not just monetary gains. That is sicker than sick and I am surprised that such an enormous error like that could have been made.

The perpetrators are certainly appalling. How could they have made such a mistake? Such idiocy led to nothing but anger and suffering.
