Basilisk Discussion Thread

So Basilisk just came out on raw and I went to go watch it since I'm a huge fan of the manga. And all I must say is that this anime met and exceded every expectation I had for it. The animation is awesome, the characters are well done and the fight scenes are awe enspiring (this may be because I watched it late at night but I thought it was awesome). They even put in some more backstories about the characters which is nice.

So let me sum of the story for those of you who want to know what its about. Think of Ninjas doing Romio and Juliet where the familys are ordered to kill each other off.

So why should you watch this anime, because it has all of the following
- Ninjas
- Hot Chicks
- A string user
- Ninjas deflecting bullets with their sword
- Good animation
- Good opening and closing song
- Awesome fights
- Good story
- Great characters
- Blood (for those of us who like it anyway)
- Evil samurai
- Lots of potential
- and so much more

I read the manga.
It has 5 volumes.
Unfortunately, no one or group seems to scan and distribute this manga.
There are only 4 or 5 chapters in internet.
I have all the manga, but I do not have a scanner.

It is based on popular ninja fiction book written by Futaro Yamada, and manga writer makes it directly from the book.
I think it came out as anime because of the popularity of Naruto.
After Naruto came out, there are few ninja related anime or special OVA came out.
Basilisk was popular, but it was not as popular as regular shonen manga because Basilisk was made for Adults. I do not know what they will do with naked females, but there is no sex in the manga.

I think this manga will be close to the regular version of ninja than Naruto.
If you did not watch this anime or read the manga, it is must "watch" for ninja fan. You will realize what a true ninja fight is. Fights in Naruto are too unrealistic.

Anyway, the anime was good. In manga, they did not put the side story about Koga Danzo and Ogen. They just killed each other in the chapter one.

I know it is fiction, but in reality I think it is impossible for Tokugawa clan to use ninja to dicide the next shogun of Tokugawa.

Later, soon there will be new main character called Koga Gennoske who is a head of Koga at this point and Oboro who is a new head of Iga. (we know, Koga Danzo is dead by Ogen). Koga family has a special eye ability, which is a power to drive opponents to kill themselves within a second, and Oboro has a eye to disable any special ninja magic. I think Naruto's manga writer got ideas about Sharingan and other special ability from this fiction.

Inuyasha Forever and Katana Fansubs are doing Basilisk as a joint project. I got the impression that their quality is better than "English-Fansubs" so I DLed theirs, just because E-F's episode size is ~135MB and IY-F's and K-F's is around ~180MB. IY-F and K-F's Episode 1 subbed (http://www.animesuki.com/series.php/598.html) is out.

Edit: Also, the Inuyasha 4-ever and Katana Fansubs version is widescreen, which I don't like. Can somebody who has the "English-Fansubs" version tell me if they encoded it full-screen or wide-screen?

Yeah it reminded me of Ninja Scroll the character designs also seem oddly similiar... Too bad the TV series couldn't be as the way it is with this anime. Oh well there's still the 2nd Ninja Scroll movie that's supposed to come out this year in Japan it better be directed by Yoshiaki KAWAJIRI who btw directed X TV series and Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust.

really? i thought the first one was very good. i wouldn't mind watching the second.

bah, i downloaded the first sub group (english subs) that did basilisk and i thought it was hard to read the subtitles. i didn't care for it so i immediately deleted that one after i downloaded the iyf and kf group because that came second then anime kraze. i compared them side by side and noticed that iyf's one has sharper images while anime kraze has a muted kind of color although i liked anime kraze's opening song subtitles over iyf's. as for the translation, i think iyf tends to be more wordy while anime kraze is more concise. i don't know japanese so i don't know about accuracy of the translation. iyf has a nicer text font and longer sentences but anime kraze has a nice normal font but with more broken up subtitles.

here's two different situations:
iyf- the white phelgm of shogen kazamachi of the kouga swastika valley group is like glue
ak- the kouga manji valley ninja, kazamachi shougen, *break* spews out phelgm which is like glue

iyf- my orders were to do it regardless of what you say
ak- i have been told that your opinion shall not influence us on this matter

as for me, it's hard to choose between the two. opinions?

I've got a question. Were the two old nin that killed each other in the first episode the lovers that were broken up before? They aged pretty badly, don't you think. While Hattori Hanzo looked the same. Unless that was his son or whatever in the current timeline. I hope Gennosuke and Oboro stay together, it saddens me what's happening around them. Though I'm wondering...if they are the grandchildren of Dango and Ogen...did they they marry other people after they broke up?

that's a scene not included in the manga... the young couple is basically those 2olds folks that kill each other at the beginning. We see the old guy shoot toothpicks, and he does the same thing in that flashback they have together. It's all to show how fragile the peace is between the kouga and iga clans
I've read only 1 volume from the manga....and even more kouga are going to die in episode 5
but the remaining ninjas from kouga seem to be pretty strong, not to mention Gennosuke himself scared that Tenzo (iga) leader

I've watched up to ep 4 (newest release by IY-fansubs. I'm getting really hyped about this anime.

It's a nice switch off from Naruto. This series is definitely more violent than Naruto. Kind of reminds me of Ninja Scroll.

This and Trinity Blood are two new fansubs that's really gotten my attention.

A lot of people said they didn't understand it, and therefore thought basilisk sucked. I had to explain to them that that "scene" was just extra info that doesn't appear in the basilisk manga :)

I have that issue with the manga. The site that scans the manga does Volume 1 Chapters 1-6 and than goes to Volume 2 Chapters7-8. I have to find another place. I think the manga is better becasue it seems its quicker than the anime. The anime is 26 episodes I think and the manga is 4 volumes.

She knows that she is the only one who can stop Gennosuke's power. By gluing her eyes shut he can prove to Gennosuke that she really doesn't want to fight him and that she wants peace. She doesn't seem to care about the ancient conflict between kouga and iga anyway...

Well if Gennosuke and Oboro stare into each others eyes. Will Oboro really defeat Gennosuke? Won't they sort of cancel each others eyes? Oboro doesn't cancel abilities right away. Gennosuke doesn't cause instant suicide. So Oboro will be sort of on the verge of suicide while Gennosuke's powers is weaking, but Oboro should also be slightly messed up as it goes on with her staring into Gennosuke's eyes.

Fillers I said, are in the anime meaning there are going to be epiosdes that don't have anything to do with the story line or something like it.


I aced the Spanish 6 final exam. I guess you would rather watch an anime that could never be finished or watch the manga and continue witht eh show.

But, thats your opnion of anime over manga. Which I doubt a lot of people are going to agree with you. Just pick up the manga and than you can speak.
