Pittsburgh Man Jailed For Yelling At Police Dog
(KDKA) PITTSBURGH A Pittsburgh man is in the Allegheny County Jail on $100,000 straight bond for allegedly yelling at a police dog.
Kenneth King, 23, walked by a K-9 police cruiser at a Sunoco station on the North Side shortly after midnight on Saturday and was startled by the dog, which was barking.
Police say King yelled at the dog, “Shut the [expletive] up, and charged with taunting a police animal.
King’s parents call it absurd.
“To officially charge him with yelling at a dog – that’s asinine to me,” Annette Cash, his mother, said.
But at King’s arraignment, District Justice Gene Ricciardi put him in jail and set the bond.
“A police dog is a police officer. There is no difference under the law,” Ricciardi tells KDKA. “They are not pets and they are trained in the purposes of law enforcement and anyone who would taunt a police officer can be considered a threat to the community.”
King’s parents say their son, who was returning home from his job as a cook, has no criminal history and poses no threat to anyone.
According to the police report, King placed his hand on his back pocket and threatened to “shank” the dog. After police arrested him and patted him down, they discovered King was carrying a knife.
From jail, King told his parents he did say he would shank the dog but muttered it under his breath and didn’t direct it at the officers and that he had no intent of harming the dog.
“Our son was wrong and he acknowledges he was wrong and we don't sit here and say he was right,” Keith Cash, his father, said.
His parent say they have no way of coming up with his bond, so their son will stay in jail at least until next week when he faces a preliminary hearing. In the meantime, they say he stands to lose both of his jobs.

So let me get this straight, a dog is now legally recognized as a deputized agent of the law? This would explain a whole helluva lot about our human police force these days... Apparently, it's more than just an figure of speech; our country is officially going to the dogs.
(my sincerest apologies to dogs everywhere, cops are giving you a bad name)
And seriously, WTF!? I've told all manner of dogs to STFU at ungodly hours when they scared the shit out of me on my way down public streets and sidewalks. Who hasn't?

He threatened to shank the Police Dog. This is a THREAT and THREATS are taken seriously nowadays.
the guy was startled, it is not odd he yelled.
a big animal popping out of nowhere and making loud noises at me in the dead of night would make me yell too.
You can't get in jail for yelling, for making threats at a Police Dog the equivalent of a Police Officer is serious.
Cops have better things to do instead of arresting people for yelling at a stupid dog which probobly barks all the time anywya.
Stupid Dog??? One of those 'stupid' dogs have done far more to Society than you ever will in your life time. And he didn't get arrested for yelling, he got arrested for making threats.
I probably would have yelled too lol this cracks me up police are spending time arresting people for yelling at dogs instead of arresting people for serious crimes

Yes a Police Dog is recognized as a Police Officer. This is so that any one that tries to harm a Police Dog has the same charge as harming a Police Officer. A Police Dog is just as effective, if not, more effective than a average Police Officer you know.
Anyway, I think its misleading saying that the Man got arrested for yelling at a dog because then the case against him would be lost according to our first Amendment.

...the freedom of speech was to protect general welfare. If you say that it includes yelling threats at dogs, then I can go to a nearby elementary school and yell threats at all the teachers. I obviously won't get arrested.
And seriously, WTF!? I've told all manner of dogs to STFU at ungodly hours when they scared the shit out of me on my way down public streets and sidewalks. Who hasn't?
You've told all manner of dogs that weren't on the job. Police dogs shouldn't be distracted / taunted.
Police say King yelled at the dog, “Shut the [expletive] up, and charged with taunting a police animal.
I don't see how saying shut the [expletive] up can come from being surprised.
King’s parents say their son, who was returning home from his job as a cook, has no criminal history and poses no threat to anyone.
Lol much. Criminals started with no criminal history too. >_>. Though, I wouldn't necessarily call King a criminal myself. Just didn't see the logic behind his parents' words.
“A police dog is a police officer. There is no difference under the law,” Ricciardi tells KDKA. “They are not pets and they are trained in the purposes of law enforcement and anyone who would taunt a police officer can be considered a threat to the community.”
You guys don't really know how important police dogs are, do you? Rather, dogs in general help us detect drugs, bombs; rescue people, bring down criminals, and basically lending us their superior senses.

LOL, a bluff? He threatened to stab the police dog and he had a knife.
That's like me sticking my hand in my pocket, grabbing my gun and saying I'm gonna shoot you to an officer, but afterwards saying I was just bluffing. :laugh People have been killed for less.
The thing some of you people fail to understand is that police dogs are considered officer's and if you threaten an officer's life, while having a weapon, you will be punished end of story.

Though the first part is the polices' point of view, King admits that he at least muttered the threat. Unless they torture people in local jails the way they do in certain places, I doubt King would be making it up. Intentions are irrelevant if you yell at authority in a threatening manner.

I believe so many people tend to ignore the points that make most sense, and there is indeed evidence of what you say Pilaf. The law enforcement officials arent innocent all the time either, and ive known people who have been arrested just to meet a quota. (Best friend went thru a obriety checkpoint and still got fined even when he had no alcohol or anything, true story.)

Woah, what is with that amount of money for a bond, nevermind how rediculous being jailed at all is. While I believe in treating animals well...that's going too far. I would only consider it okay if the dog actually understood what the guy was saying, and I have my doubts about that. I suppose the jailing made sense to the police because it was a kind of indirect threat to them with him saying he had a weapon. xD
The dog is clearly racist.

This is indeed very true, and exactly the reason why the man was arrested. Besides, all should know by now that people in America assign more intrinsic value to animals than they do to people; Ellen DeGeneres' recent, nationally televised dog dilemma should be relative proof of that.

Guy tells the dog to shut up.

Back pocket is revealed to contain a knife.
Yes, a totally ridiculous excuse to accuse someone of merely "yelling" at a dog.

The dog was on duty. There's a reason why you shouldn't go up to one of those police dogs and feed/pet them.
