View Full Version : Who is THE True King Of New York?
Like the title says and Why?
Me- At this point in time of rap music, 50 cent. He has some hard records out and everyone else right now is pretty much slacking and lacking.

Jay or Nas. They do the most for the game on a whole. 50 sells a lot of records, but he's not progressing the art much. Papoose got crazy mixtapes, but who the fuck knows who Papoose is besides your core Hip Hop fans?
Jay & Nas touch on both sides. Preference's sake goes to Nas though.

Pretty much. Though Papoose isn't up there yet skills-wise to be compared to Nas & Jay even if he was more established. 50 Cent has nothing going for him as far as I'm concerned, and I believe his future sales will follow the trend of his latest album. He's not moving forward for himself or hip-hop in general. Jay is the most influential and that's final. Nas is staying current, and is making the best music out of all them.
I say Nas.

I agree with Del and Snake, but I'd sway towards Jay because of his influence on the game as a whole and his position in Hip-Hop right now, as a major record label CEO. Also, Nas has done some questionable things lately, such as shun the Black Republicans video.

I would agree with you if Jay used his influence to further hip-hop in general. I don't think he's done enough personally. He's wasting his time pushing Lady Sovereign.
I know you're acting crazy with that Nas one. Him & Spike couldn't work the situation out properly, so he had to scrap the idea.. that's a "questionable thing" on Nas' part? :apathy Get off his dick.

Lady who?
So he didn't sign Nas to Def Jam and help him out of his bad situation at Sony?
Yes it's a questionable thing because he basically said he couldn't think of an idea so he left it. That's weak. But if you want more examples, where's the Hustler's video that's for a long time now been filmed and edited? I'll tell you, it's still with the producer and Nas can't even get it off him. Smarten up.

Lady Sovereign, from your high school & town.
Nas' bad situation at Sony? Def Jam IS Sony.
Nas said him & Spike Lee couldn't agree on ideas for the video, so he scrapped it. That's not weak but Blue Magic is.
As for all this talk about video production - how is that relevant to furthering the hip-hop music and even affecting someone's status like that? Jay-Z in his position has a much bigger responsibility to recruit talent than Nas has making the videos on the times you want them. Nas is making good albums, that's all I expect.

Sony is the conglomerate that subsidises Def Jam, but Sony Music is a record label in it self and is not intertwined with Def Jam.
It's relevant because the KoNY shouldn't be getting hustled by music video producers. This thread isn't about who makes the best music/is the best lyrically. Can't you read the poll? With names like Cam'ron and 50 Cent on there, it can't possible be. I'm talking about the top two candidates Nas and Jay-Z and who of the two handles their business best.

Nas was on Columbia which is under Sony just like Def Jam is.
So this isn't about who makes the best music, but who's the best businessman?

@Snake: That depends on how you interpret what makes a rapper suitable to be the King of their city. It's not entirely about who's the best businessman but that a contributing factor in Jay-Z's case.

Who do you think we are? He went by the names of The Notorious B.I.G, Biggie Smalls and sometimes Frank White.

Respect, Arnie.
I don't think I can honestly say I believe there is a King of NY. Undoubtedly that mantle was Biggie's in his day, but since then there have been many that have been advocated as 'the new NY rap saviour,' from Nas to Jay-Z to Papoose, and probably many others. As such, NY has produced a lot of great rappers, but I can't think of one definitive guy who has stood out enough to be given such a distinction.

Ok. What some of you guys are not getting is what I am asking. Who is THE True King of New York right now?
Right now it is 50. Sorry to say but it just is. I mean 50 just came and he's already conquering the rap game. How can you tell me otherwise? Yes, jay is a great lyricist but his songs go with that part in time, not right now. That is thing. Nas is great too, I would know but he isn't exactly selling out places.

Educate the man, Sin. :nod
Besides, sales alone does not make someone the King. At one stage, Nas was King of New York, if you will, and yet the number of records he sold pales in comparison to 50's SoundScan figures.

Simply, 50 Cent isn't the KoNY.

The ONLY reason why 50 lost was because of the fact that 50 said he would retire if he lost to Kanye and people wanted to see if that was true and this is the truth. Also, Kanye is one of the best out there, definitely in my top ten, but Kanye, to me, can't match up to 5, in terms of making great songs.

Sorry but he retracted that statement about a week after it hit the presses (which had to have been at the very least 2 weeks before the release. Everyone knew he wasn't retiring after he said he wasn't even if he did sell less. Plain and simple he's just not selling like that anymore. And he may be rich but he's not making as much as Diddy or Jay. Then you gotta take into account skills. Because no king is going to be whack on the mic. And just about everyone in that poll outshines him. Even Cam (especially his Children of the Corn days).

Those cd's I named were recent. G-Unit? Nope, there time has come and gone. 50 Cent is whack, Lloyd Banks was decent but fell of hard, Young Buck may be the best in the group but he's sub par and Tony Yayo is hot garbage.
There isn't really a group that I'd consider Kings of NY, but there's a lot that are better than G-Unit. For the south though, Outkast are definitely numero uno.
I seriously can't believe you're making these statements KM. 50 cent the king of new york?
If you're basically saying his beat, his sound, his lyrics and his way of doing shit in the rap game makes him the king of NY, you surely haven't listened to much else apart from mainstream. He flopps. His raps half the time make no fucking sense, and if they do, they're still fucking stupid. All he raps about is getting shot, bitches, money, being a powerful man (physically, yes, brains and power in other ways - hardly) and other useless shit. And he's the biggest fucking biter EVER. He straight out copied a few lines from method man in a diss he made, thats one of the things i found myself and proved myself.
"This is a true fact/
since when has it become cool to get shot and not shoot back?"
-Jadakiss, song called Checkmate, 50 cent diss.
Back to saying my opinion, i'd have to say Jadakiss for sure. I feel great/surprised he is up in the poll, i think he may be underrated in a way, but that guy is a lethal beast. I shouldn't even need to explain why he's so good.
And if it was groups, DEFO D-Block and Wu tang clan. Although if i could only pick one, it'd be Wu tang clan.

First. I listen to so much underground, mainstream, albums, mixtapes it's not even funny. Every single person on the poll, I have listened to fully. ESPECIALLY Jay and Nas since I downloaded both torrents with all their albums and also some other shit by them.
Second. I forget the guys name but when I found it I'll let you know. The main guy who was suspected to shoot 50 was killed two days later, I believe, by people who were known to be close to 50. And yes, Jadakiss is underrated and is a great lyricist, just not the best rapper because of the fact that there is more to being a rapper than just being a good lyricist.

Based on the couple of years I lived in NY I say it goes to Jay Z easily. If you lived or were in NY in the late 90's you should know what I'm talking about.
Yeah it's true, all the other rappers listed do/did get played on Hot97, and true you do here people in the street blasting them. But Jay Z held NY down with Mega hit after Mega hit every summer. Sometimes it felt like you couldn't go anywhere without hearing Jigga.
Considering he retired but still has a massive buzz and one of the most talked about albums coming this year he has to take it.
