By the same mastermind mangaka that brought us the marvels

20th Century Boys
Monster
Happy!
Master Keaton

The one and only, Naoki Urasawa.

This manga is a collab with the legendary Osamu Tezuka for his manga "astro Boy". I know it might sound strange at first, for the simple fact that the god of manga and anime passed away more than ten years ago. However, Urasawa is offering a remake for the story, from the eyes of the villian, PLUTO.

A breif synposis:-

Inspector Gesicht d' Europol inquires into a series of murder made on robots and personalities well-known for their participation in the installation of the laws of equality and freedom of the robots. But the robots disappeared are not any, in fact the robots seven more powerful was ever built and all had become benefactors of humanity by putting a term at a conflict in the Central Asia. Its way will carry out it until Atom (Astro) the little boy robot who also made him party of these seven famous robots.

It's being scanlated by my fav group, mangascreener (www.mangascreener.com) , you can get it via their IRC channel, located at
#mangascreener on irc.highwah.net

I cant use IRC, since the computers in univeristy do not allow me to install any programs, so for those with IRC, if you can provide us with the scanlated chapters, it would be greatly apperciated ^.^

I've read it, and with time I'm sure it'll be up there with Monster and 20th Century Boys (not to say it isn't great already). I've got all 17 chapters, but, uhh... where should I upload 'em? yousendit.com is a pain, and that's the closest thing I can think of. I guess I'm not much help without a site to host it...

you dont have to uplaod them all at one go, just a few chapters would be grand. (and I beg thee, use winzip!)

yeah pluto is awesome and mr spoiler's sister is also in it! and a lot of characters that were in tezukas earlier works..

i just would love for mangascreener to fasten their pace, i mean.. ..i have already read vol 19 of H2 man how i want the rest of them! ( i dunno nuthin' 'bout baseball though, its just an awesome manga!)

mow
04-14-2005, 07:51 PM
Anything by mangascreener.com is brilliant, but my god!!!! spoiler's sister is in it too? This is incredible! You have no idea how ridiclously joyful I am right now! Urasawa is a genius, you cannot argue that fact. Who else would've been able to create such a thing: creating his own unique plotline yet sticking to the origins if the masterpiece. God I love that man.

EDIT;
chapter 12, I feel teary now, the figth between
Pluto and Brando[/spoiler was so moving, when Brando was sendign the memories of his family...he was sad that wont see them again :( he couldnt think clearly, the very last moment of the existance of his robotic mind was his family, his robotic family

Im depressed now.

mow
04-14-2005, 10:01 PM
TELL ME ABOUT IT!!!

A KKK clan against robots? and Gesicht kiled the man's brother? This is probabily the reason why the police chief tampered with his memories three years ago. This leads to the theory that ALL 7 robots who were involved in the training and the war have killed before. The greatest scientific creations going against the no.1 rule in robotics... this is so damn good! and its only the first 2 volumes! I bow to Urasawa. All other mangakas are garbage compared to him

mow
04-14-2005, 10:15 PM
I'm not joking here, when Brandon & #2 died, I almost wept. It was so vivid, I felt I was there witnessing him singing that song to the old man as he fought and when Brandon was sending his final memories of his family.

but back to Pluto. How many volumes do you think it will be? Things are happenign at such a rapid pace. But knowing Urasawa it cant be less than 5 volumes (his shortest work was a 1 volume one-shot, it's name evades my memory atm)

Also, what other titles have you read by Urasawa?

I wondering.. if the series are suppose to be from the POV of Pluto, then why hasn't it started with Pluto? I understand that these chapters were suppose to be a re-introduction to the world of Atom and that it's setting up the points that will be revelant later in the series. But couldn't it have done the same with the POV of pluto as well?

Or is that we'll find out that Pluto is actually the inspector.

hmmm.

mow
04-19-2005, 10:37 PM
Well thatis my fault actually. What I meant was the series will focus mostly on Pluto, not pluto's POV. But you never know, Urasawa is unconventinal, he might do that ;]

Well just started the manga... already up to chapter 17. Guess I'll have to wait for a while till the next chapter.

Quite an interesting manga. I like that the main character is a robot instead of a human. Not much of a spoiler...probably revealed in the 3rd page or something. The memory thing is interesting...though those KR clan members reminds me of a certain...'group'...kind of funny...

That part with this dying robo-dog, really moved me.
And then this bug guy. I mean it looks like he destroyed that dog and left it in park so this professor could find it. OMG waht a bastard. To kill a living being (in Pluto robots are somehow treated like other living beings) just to have a reason to see that profesor.

And I hope that Uran won't die. Or at least she won't die with a meaningles deat. (She comes there where this Pluto robot is; BOOM and she's dead)

That sure as hell helps. Thanks, man.

So, what I got out of this was... that Gesicht killed Adolf's brother due to the man's horrid acts against robot-kind? Still wondering how Gesicht was able to do so by overcoming that infamous law... unless he himself is of the "Perfect Robot" variety that Dr. Tenma was alluding to in the last chapter.

@ Pakku & Hellkorn

Thanx for the Chappies:wink

Since I only asked the question and pakku was the one who responded... I see little reason for me to be thanked.

(Then again, some people might not've caught up on the chapters otherwise, so...)

And question @ all:

Who´s your favourite Pluto-Chara?

Kind of a hard to choose because Pluto is a manga that doesn't really present any light moments from characters, but I'll just take the easy way out and say Gesicht.

Pluto is actually based on Osamu Tezuka's Tetsuwan Atom. Its characters are taken from The Strongest/ Biggest Robot on Earth; one of Tetsuwan Atom story arcs.

As usual, Urasawa created Pluto as a dark and mysterious story. For all Astroboy fans, please be careful. This manga is totally different from the original Astroboy ( it may not suitable for children ).

Urasawa uses many complicated issues here, like : politic, human rights ( well, robot rights precisely ), and also emancipation.

There's a conflict called The 39th Central Asia Conflict here. Interestingly enough, ( I don't know it's a coincidence or not ) this conflict has similarities with 2003 Iraq War. Did Urasawa ( once again ) find an idea from the real event; just like 20th Century Boys had similarities with sarin gas attack in Tokyo subway station by Aum Shinri kyo?

~*~*~*

Introduction
European Police Investigater Gesicht is trying to get to the bottom of a series of both robot and human deaths. There hasn't been a case of a robot commiting murder in over 8 years, but as Gesicht furthers his investigation, more and more of the fact begin to point to that sort of conclusion.

I just want to know if we can be looking forward to any new releases past chapters thirty-one from Manga Screener anytime soon, really (unless some have been put out, make me a very bad critic).

But I fully agree with the above: Pluto is a truly brilliant manga that I hope is licensed so it can belong on myself along with Monster and 20th Century Boys (when Viz eventually puts that out after Monster), both of which are also done by Naoki Urasawa.

Stephen, Mangascreener's translator for Pluto, hasn't been able to do any translations due to some sort of computer trouble. From what I hear, after a long wait for it to be repaired, when he finally had his computer returned to him the problems continued (or maybe entirely new ones, I dunno) so he had to send it a second time... so he's been computerless for quite a while. Apparently he hasn't even gotten to read any of the raws for over a month, let alone translate them. All that business should be sorted out soon, though.

What I'm wondering is why this seems to stop the editor from releasing some more HQ Pluto chapters, or even chapter 32 which Stephen has translated a long time ago. They like to release in bulk, so maybe they're all done that and are just waiting for more stuff before making their chapters go public.

Pluto is awesome by the way. It's like a badass Astro Boy fanfic.

Urasawa is one of the most brilliant mangakas of our age and time, and easily the greatest mangaka of all time. The depth of every single seires he creates is truelly mind boggling, and this is a perfect example of how he manages to take what was an childish concept into a very turbilant and sophisiticated concept. Pluto is fantastic <3

One can only hope. In the meantime, I'm willing to get into other MS projects, but it's the problem that I'm IRC-retarded, and certain projects aren't being seeded (Believers and National Quiz, to be specific).

Well, at the rate things are going, they might decide to do a bulk of chapters thirty-two to thirty-five/thirty-six (depends on when Stephen's problem is fixed).

Pluto is awesome by the way. It's like a badass Astro Boy fanfic.

Should I invest time into reading Astro Boy(a.k.a. Tetsuwan Atom), or possibly even collect what Dark Horse has put out? I wasn't that impressed by Tezuka's Lost World, Metropolis, and NextWorld, but his material with Adolf, Buddha, and Phoenix (well, specific volumes in that case) are on the other end of the spectrum. So in my case, is Astro Boy a Lost World or a Buddha?

not very sure if u guys have read "happy" by Urasawa too =) *tries to find*

Eh, I've read it, and I'm somewhat indifferent to it. It has a lot of positives going for it, but the biggest problem is Urasawa's need to constantly torment our heroine. I mean, we get it, she is unlucky and people are out to get here, but some of the acts against her are too much of a stretch.

First of all, Stephen's back and with a vengeance. I expect Pluto translations will soon follow.

Couldn't tell you how Astro Boy is as my experience with it is limited to vague memories of catching an episode or two of the cartoon at a very young age. I've been kind of interested in it since reading Pluto, though.

I'm not really a Happy! fan either, yet I still find myself reading it whenever more is released. Go figure.

As usually I find myself writing my posts in ugly point form. :/

Hmm... I'm looking around but I'm not really seeing any sites like that, which is strange for a fairly popular series. Hmm... well, maybe someday somebody'll make a pimping thread for it, it would be a pretty easy job since there's only a few volumes :P

As for H2... well I can direct you to the scripts of the translations and I can upload the raws for you... but as you may already know, they haven't done the editing stuff that combines the translation and the raw manga into a nice scanlation form for those volumes. But if you're interesed in reading the raws with scripts, gimme a PM.

I re-read Pluto last night, up to chap 15. I almost cried when reading the part about Norse#2's death . The old man's lines saying "time to practice your piano" was emotional .

So it's occurred to me that most of you guys are missing out on the pages that are added to the tankobons because the scans we're pimping are all from the magazine serialization. So here's the scans of the covers and stuff:

http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/5161/plutov01coverdeluxe1we7.th.jpg (http://img527.imageshack.us/my.php?image=plutov01coverdeluxe1we7.jpg)

You might have noticed that there seems to be two different covers for volume 1. Well, since Pluto is a big deal in Japan, they're releasing a more expensive, "deluxe" version of each volume of Pluto alongside the standard versions. For the extra yen spent, buyers of the deluxe versions get all color pages left intact, the size of the pages is considerably bigger for your viewing pleasure, higher quality paper (I think?) and bonus material like the overall sexier design of the book. Here's a picture illustrating the size difference:

discrimination :yell When I convert the amount of money I have to pay for normal volume in Japan *about 600Yen* to my country's currency due to the current currency rate , I realise that there's no way in hell I could/would buy a whole manga series , like Berserk, Vagabond, Monster which are all over 15 volumes . I dunno, personally I really wasn't expecting him to kill off Atom. I mean, he's the goddamned Astro Boy. Killing him, even in a manga, should be a crime against humanity.

Vietnam. Even if I have enough money, I can't buy Berserk or vagabond here. Coz' there's no way such mature mangas can be published .Indeed, a big publisher used to advertise their publishing Vagabond, but then it was called off. Only when I read Vagabond, did I know the reason why. But Monster was completely published . So I have high hope for Pluto and 20th century boys. Let me see, another Naoki Urasawas's manga was also published. It was a manga about a girl who knows Judo . It was also a popular manga . But back then, my mother didn't let me read any kind of mangas, which she called picture books =/

Tsk, manga fans must have it rough there. Luckily you're good at English so you can read all these scanlations. I'm spoiled; not only can I read English but I can read French too. The French market in particular has a simply incredible amount of mature manga that I imagine can't be found anywhere else outside Japan :love

Not quite. We dont have new mangas published. But old stuffs are published in pirate books. Ya know, the publishers don't buy the copyright, and one volume is cheap (about 35 Yen), although it's shorter, and the series can be cancelled at any time. I read a lot of mangas in pirate books, and I didn't buy even one volume. I rent them. I rent about 5 volumes a day . And i read Slamdunk in 1 day. It's one of the manga which the publisher did buy copyright. It's only 31 volumes originally. But they published it in 37 volumes.
And Adachi Mitsuru for example, is one of the most well-known mangaka . Read Niji Iro Tougarashi , pakku , if you haven't.

But sadly, now not many cool mangas are released. Katsu is being released, 1 volume a week. But I have read the whole series, so I don't buy. It's still cheaper than it is originallt published in japan (about 60 yen/volume)

That's odd... try this (http://download.yousendit.com/C0495DC56CF86B19).

seems like it can connect. I'll try again later T__T

It's interesting to hear what the manga situation is like in Viet Nam, I wasn't expecting it to be that much different from the North American/European manga market, but this is the first I've heard of these pirate books before. And they're so cheap! *whistle* Now there's my only problem with buying French stuff... the cost can be brutal when ordering outside of France. When I buy manga I make sure to only buy stuff I can see myself re-reading multiple times so that I get my money's worth out of it.

Actually I'm waiting for the scanlations of Niji Iro Togarashi to finish all eleven volumes before starting to read it. One more volume to go...

Pluto comes out monthly (in every second copy of Big Comic Original, which comes out every two weeks). The group that scanlates them like to release their manga in batches, so you'll usually see two chapters released together at a time. However, if you're interested you can keep an eye on this topic since I usually post the raw and a translation script to it immediately after both become available. I would expect that to happen for the next chapter (36?) within a week or so.

And I don't think anybody here has actually read Tetsuwan Atom (or at least not this particular part), but you can catch bits and pieces it mentions on the Astro Boy wiki page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetsuwan_Atom), just ctrl+f "pluto" or "world's greatest robot". I get the impression that Urasawa takes a lot of different turns in Pluto, the most obvious example being:

Urasawa killed off Astro Boy.

I come bearing a new Pluto chapter (http://www.sendspace.com/file/6uh7px), as usual.

I also came across the original Astro Boy story Pluto is based on, which I imagine may be of interest to Pluto fans, although I must warn you it is in its original Japanese form. Certainly still worth a look if you're a fan of Urasawa's spin-off though. Just take a look at some of the original character designs:

http://img376.imageshack.us/img376/6256/geischtgi3.jpg

There's our man Gesicht. He plays a pretty minor role here, actually.

http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/336/tenmaer2.jpg

Here we have Atom's creator, Dr. Tenma. Tezuka decided to model him after a rooster, I guess.

http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/4748/north2te1.jpg

North #2 and his irritable master. I've got Urasawa's version of the master set as my avatar, so it's easy to see the artistic liberties he took with even the most minor characters.

Anyway, you can grab that over here (http://www.sendspace.com/file/sik6h1).

so among all of Naoki Urasawa's work how would u rate Pluto compared to Monster and 20th CB, I'm currently reading Monster and 20th CB and I'm in love with his work that I want to read all of em.

So would u highly recommend Pluto, or it's not on the same level as Monster & 20th CB?

Well his two other major works (at least that you can find in English other then a few chapters) are Yawara! and Happy!. I've read a bit Yawara! and I have to say I really enjoyed it :amuse Although I havn't read too much of it as I am waiting for the scanlations to get a little bit further as I like reading in large chunks :P As for Happy!, I havn't read any that series yet. To be honest I've kinda been avoiding it as I've heard that, while good, it is a very depressing and pessimistic manga which usually isn't my thing. I will probably read it eventually though since Naoki Urasawa is just so awesome :P

Nah, not really. The protagonist has plenty of stuff go wrong for her, but I for one never really felt bad or anything, really. It's a pretty light manga, despite everybody being against her, the sexy evil bitch succeeds, good characters being manipulated, etc.

IMO it is defiantly on par with both of them and even better then 20th CB. I had never read Astro Boy before reading it and Pluto dosn't even really follow the origional plot of the Astro Boy arc anyways. Its only loosely based on Astro Boy so knowing anything about it before hand isn't really needed.

I think that being familiar with Astro Boy helps, even if it's not necessary. It's really cool to see how Urasawa changed the role/appearance of the characters. You'll have to buy the Astro Boy manga, of course, but you only need volume 3, and it's not out of print. I think it's worth the ten dollars (less if it's used).

Can anyone provide 41 and 42 links? The old ones are dead. If not, it's cool. I'll just have to mIRC them like I used to. I just have to reinstall and re-register.

I've been reading the series from the get go but wanted to let the chapters build up since releases don't come often. I find his works definitely better to read in one lump sum. I love Monster, but 20th is my absolute bible for manga in terms of literary genius. I just never liked Dr. Tenma. I thought he was a very weak protagonist. Now, Kenji, he's such a great character to the point where he becomes a legend.

Browsing through this board and noticed not a single thread from this awesome manga.

It's based on the 3rd volume of Tezuka's series Astro Boy, but re-envisioned by the masterful mangaka Naoki Urasawa.

Only 47 Chapters are currently out and this series is being scanlated by MangaScreener.

So who else has been reading this awesome series and what do you think is going to happen next?

Kilowog

I read it as soon as it was scanlated which was stupid thing to do since the scanlations haven't been moving forward very well and I kinda decided to wait for it to at least reach ch 60 or so before reading it.

It's incredible so far though, it's amazing how Urasawa can bring forth such feeling in a manga.

cool. I wanna see if they keep the dynamic between Astro's sister and Pluto, seeing Urasawa do his magic on that will be especially good. Also curious, it's said in chapter 3 that there are 6 more that Pluto will go after, in the original Pluto had 7 targets.

EDIT: apparently no one knows that Bora exists

Ok finally read all 20 chapters on onemanga.com. absolutely superb series. I like the way Urasawa is handling it and the updated versions of Astro and co. and of course the current political commentary. I also like Brau-1589, he pulls off this cool Hanibal Lector type vibe. Also the KR substory is pretty good.

I wanna know more of how they'll bring up Bora since Bora was the one who defeated Pluto in the original

The latest Pluto chapter was incredibly moving and this is why Gesicht is one of my favorite Urasawa creations. He is evolving, the robots are evolving and not with chips inserted in them or them being modified but due to seeing the emotions/love shown by men and trying to understand them. Gesicht is doing so little by little, trying to understand the emotions and trying to imitate them. Seeing Gesicht holding that "robot baby" and saying"I will never let you go, not even if the world ends", I read it last night so this might be a bit wrong but still, is one of the more beautiful scenes I have read in a very long time.

Can't believe that one man can create so many, near perfection, series.

I finished reading it all. Urasawa is indeed a master. I't amazing how he turned the shounen-ish story of Astroboy into such an emotionally powerful seinen. :cry
North #2's three chapters were the best. :cry

Oh, Urasawa. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

I just finished it. A beautiful masterpiece. By far one of the best manga I have ever read.

Saw an update on Billy Bat @ onemanga.com and it reminded me that Pluto must've finished by now and since I wanted to read it in one go, now I guess is the time. Already read 2 chapters and, well what can I tell, it's Urasawa, so I have high hopes and I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

Urasawa must like Germany a lot, I've read 20th CB and Monster so far, now starting Pluto and 2 out of these 3 mangas take place in Germany. Interesting.

edit: after 10 chapters it's not really Germany, but at least it started there. :p

They killed Atom...

:cry :cry

edit: Oh god. This is fucking incredible. This tops Monster and 20th CB, my #1 / #2 favourites. So fucking deep man.
