Nice idea,, i'm curious what exotic ways of saying hello we're going to learn this way.
Here's a few I know of :
Dutch : Hallo, Hoi, Goedendag (although that's kinda stiff), Hoe gaat het?
German : Hallo, Gutentag, Wie geht's?
French : Bonjour, Salut, Comment ca va?
Although there's probably many more ways of saying that in those languages...

In Swedish it's Hej
Jackal Iscariot
04-12-2005, 02:08 PM
hola (spanish)
hej (swedish)
German:
Hallo (and the "a" is pronounced like the "o" in house or mouse)- most common, fit's in every situation
Hallöchen, Hallihallo- kind of nonsense from hallo
Guten Tag(/Morgen/Abend) - very formal ("Gute Nacht" is rather a good-bye phrase, you won't say that to greet someone)
Hi, Huhu, Na?, Tag (short for guten Tag), morgen (short for guten Morgen), 'nabend (short for guten Abend)- also quite common among friends/young ppl
(Na) Wie geht's (dir)?- how are you? (but you'll NEVER answer with the same phrase without an answer, this Englisch "How do you do?""How do you do?" is quite strange^^)

Afirca consists of many diverse cultures and tribes, each with their unique language (or to be more specific, dialect). However, you will find that most african nations tend to use swahili (central african nations for that matter at least), not sure about south africa though. Anyhow, to say hello or hi in Swahili its

Well, the common Filipino people doesn't have any generic language when they say "hi" or "hello". They just use that exact word. But we do have our own language for some common greetings.
Good Morning - Magandang Umaga
Good Afternoon - Magandang Tanghali/Hapon
Good Evening - Magandang Gabi
How are you? - Kumusta?
That's the gist of it, I hope...

Well those work but if your mute they really don't help much, if you want there are two main ways of greeting, you can wave a sign of freindly greeting, then if the greeting is not ment to be friendly you can show people the universal sign that you dislike them, you do this by making a fist then extending your middle for finger :smile-big -

Czech:
hello - haló!
hello - ahoj
Ahoj is pronounced similar to the English word "Ahoy". Interesting that the Czech language has a word for "hello" that sounds like an English nautical greeting, when Czechoslovakia (at least up until the early 1990's) was one of the only land-locked countries in Europe.

MOST OBVIOUS LANGUAGES:
JAPANESE
ENGLISH - DUH!
SPANISH
FRENCH
German (kinda)
everything else is somewhat obvious (or not at all) but might not be known to everyone

In polish you can say it various ways. :) "Cześć" is the most common one, if you want to say it more in slang it'd be "siema", can also be "witam", "elo" and maaaaaany others. :P

in chinese we'll say"你好(ni hao)"on the formal occasion.
mostly we would just say" Hi" to our friends or ask some questions like"where are you going?(你去哪儿啊?)""what are you gonna do (去做什么呀?)"or just smile and wave our hands......

Bulgarian :)
hello = Здравей
hi = Здрасти
good morning = Добро Утро
good afternoon = Добър Ден
good evening = Добър Вечер
good night = Лека нощ
If you wanna pronounce them it's gonna be a bit hard cuz Bulgarian language has letters that do not exist in english and have not some kind of similar sounds <_<
Here they are how they are pronounced...well,not exactly right but right enough...read exactly like it's written
hello = Zdravei
hi = Zdrasti
good morning = Dobro Utro
good afternoon = Dobar Den
good evening = Dobar Vecher
good night = Leka Nosht

in hungarian you can either say szia (pronounced kinda like see ya) or you can say jó napot which means good day but it means hello too.
in romanian it's ciao, salut or bună which is short for bună(good) ziua(day)
oh and this will probably sound weird for most of you... usually in hungarian a child says csókolom (chokolom) to an adult because it shows respect. in romanian it's the same deal only they say săru'mâna (which is kinda like sir-uh moonah). both of these literary mean "I kiss your hand!"
I bet some ppl are going wha?! right now :laugh
I'd love to see their faces :P
great idea this thread:)
Ez jó volt eszti, és még bátorkodok hozzátenni egy csipetnyit. :)
In hungarian you can also say:
Csá! (it's a bit slang)
Heló!
Üdvözlöm! (rather formal)
Üdv! (the abbreviation of üdvözlöm)
