Some jackass told me that Sailor Moon was actually a hentai that had to be edited for American TV that it wasn't necessarily hentai anymore but I have a good feeling that this is just a bunch of crap.

Not hentai. Just heavily fanserviced.
Lots of "panty-shots" and random hints towards Yuri coupling (er, from the non-coupled sailors). But other than that, it's rather harmless.
Makes me want to question this guy/girl/person's definition of hentai. :blink

Well, I believe that it is one of the animes, with most doujinshis based on it. Maybe that is why he thought so?

He is full of shit... The major thing he is talking about (I'm pretty sure) is the transformations. In the original japanese anime, the sailors were actually naked and not all covered in cloth, or whatever it was in the americanized version.
As well as what silverwings said..lots of fanservice such as panty shots and love interests that are 'left to the imagination'.

If that's hentai, then I wonder what all that "fanart" floating around is...
I enjoyed the show when I was little, god damn it! There was nothing wrong with it! I always wanted to throw roses like Tuxedo Mask (most uninspired name ever, now that I think of it).

Er, they aren't naked in the Japanese version of the transformations. It's exactly the same - all glowly like with no details.

Well, expected, the guy's definition of hentai is anything that has a panty shot or large breasts. He says all hentai is crap and a disgrace to anime. I print out a picture with a girl showing her shoulders while taking off a kimono and he says I'm a pervert. I'll admit most hentai is crap but there are some artists who draw very good hentai with both good sex scenes and good plot development, like most doujinshi artists, and not just random orgies. Hell, the guy probably doesn't even know that most of the anime artists might actually be hentai award winners. His only exception is Ranma 1/2 because it's a classic.

Sailor Stars is the final series. It was by far my favorite series. Too bad it never aired in the U.S.
Some info on sailor stars:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sailor_Stars
The first part of stars continues off with their last nemesis from SuperS, but even she is just a small part in the final villain's main schemes.
~Sailor Starlights were pretty interesting to say the least.
~Chibi Chibi
~There enemies are Sailor soldiers this time around.
~New power ups as usual.
The entire series is 200 episodes long. The Stars series is from episode 167-200.

The Final few episodes were really good.
Sailor Neptune and Uranus selling their souls (stars seeds) to serve Sailor Galaxia and defeat Sailor Saturn and Pluto.
Then taking on Sailor Moon and the Starlights...and at the last second revealing the farce that they were actually waiting for the right time to strike at Sailor Galaxia....but Galaxia doesn't appear to have a star seed of her own...whoops...too bad. xD
Why Sailor Moon was nude for most of the final epsiode was beyond me :oh
The only thing that bugged me is that Mamoru didn't get any screen time in the last arc. *died on his way to America* xDD

I've been watching and reading Sailor Moon for a long time now and I just kinda feel insulted by what the dubbers did. True, ya know, Usagi (serena) was always a little spacy but they also gave her SUCH an annoying voice that it just compounded the annoyance! The dubbers also destroyed Michiru (Michelle) by taking away her grace and beauty and throwing her into the role of boy crazy dreamer-all in the name of hiding the fact that she is originally a lesbian.
....Thoughts, anyone?
Sailor Leo

pretty much yeah dubbers suck ass....I mean COUSINS!!!!!! Well actually thinking about it, that is humorous because they're saying that incest is ok, but lesbianism, oh hellz no.....

The weird part was that the dubbing (save for Michiru and Haruka) got worse as the series progress. It's like the person who voiced Usagi in Sailor Moon S and SS sounded like some unintelligent person who may have had weight issues :oh

Yeah, I don't know what the hell happened to most of the cast as time progressed. :/
Also, I've said this many times on here, but I'd like to see the final season dubbed. However, Toei has locked down on all licenses for the Sailor Moon franchise and to date doesn't intend on putting up Sailor Stars for licensing. *sigh*
Well, at least Geneon expressed interest in doing it if Toei ever decides to allow Sailor Stars to be licensed for English distribution. For now though I'm satisfied with the HQ DVD subbed versions. The same goes for the manga which had a bad run because of Mixx's (I think it was two x's..) poor translations early on in the series and is now out-of-print. Decent scanlations are available though.

Anyway, on the issues of which season I like most, I would say I like Stars the best. Usagi seemed really mature, and there was real romantic/sexual tension between Seiya and Usagi. This has been missing between Mamorou and Usagi for a while now. SS wasn't that bad. As Booster Beetle said, it had good moments of character interaction and it was funny. My main gripe with it was that they dumbed down Usagi in order to make Chibi-Usa look smart. Sure Usagi was not exactly the sharpest person out there, but they really made her look and act like an immature idiot. Thankfully, Stars rectified the problem by having her deal with a long-distance relationship and such.
What do you think about the anime decision to have the Starlights change genders? I think it might have been better if they just had them stay as males.
Juanita Tequila

Like I mentioned before, my favorite season of Sailor Moon had to be Stars. You have the full cast on hand with new characters (Starlights), new enemies who are sailor soldiers and pretty interesting power-ups (however, I still believe Sailor Moon S's had the best finishing attacks and power-ups). Sailor Moon SS felt like it regressed a little. However it really depends on whether your a fan of Pegasus and Chibi-Usagi.
@PL: Yeah, I was also holding out hope for a license of Stars. I would have been one of the first customers ready to pre-order the DVDs if it came to pass. But I guess I'll have to live with my fansubs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the manga version have the Starlights as originally women who just crossed-dressed as guys?
In the manga, the Three Lights are an all-female trio of cross-dressers who pose as male idol singers, but in the anime Sailor Stars they actually gained the bodies of males in their Earth forms, becoming women again in their Sailor Senshi forms. Their male forms are a disguise as stated by Kakyuu when she asks Seiya if he uses that appearance on Earth. Seiya acknowledges this is true. [7] Towards the end of Sailor Stars, Seiya tells Usagi "I wanted to tell you my feelings because Seiya's time is short." [8] indicating further that the form taken is a physical disguise.
I think they should have just stayed as females who just happened to cross-dress as males for the sake of hiding their identity. But I guess the anime wanted a transformation sequences including bodily changes :S

I think I liked Naoko's original take (them as females disguised as males) better since all Sailor Senshi are supposed to be strictly female with no special circumstances. Naoko was pretty pissed at that...:sweat

Yeah, I heard Naoko was pretty pissed about that change. But I don't see how a romance between Seiya and Usagi would work out if they were both women all the time. I don't think Usagi swings that way, so there would be awkwardness rather than romantic tension between them. Besides, they could still have the whole Sailor Wars with male Starlights. Just make them Princess Fireball's knights or something, since she was a Sailor Senshi.

Well, Seiya's feelings were one-sided all the way through so I still don't think it would have mattered if she remained female.

Well yes, Usagi was ultimately loyal to Mamoru but there was an element of sexual tension with Seiya. I mean even Rei came to visit Usagi and ask her what her feelings were with Seiya. This kind of thing would not work if Seiya was a woman all the time because Usagi isn't a homosexual as evidenced by the fact that she was uncomfortable whenever Haruka flirted with her. Part of the appeal of Stars, for me at least, was seeing how Usagi dealt with the stress of a long term relationship and the advances of another handsome suitor. I think this aspect would have worked out better if Seiya was a guy through and through.

The anime already went through a great deal to change the manga storyline. Changing the sex would of Seiya would have certainly crossed the line. She may have felt uncomfortable dealing with women, but the main issue is that she felt something else for another character, irregardless of gender. And even if Seiya was a guy the end result still would have been the same.

They should have stayed true to the manga for the SuperS season, or at least keep the part for the Sailor Quartet and Endymion's Golden Crystal. It would have given Mamoru more development and presence within the anime. In the anime this development was totally rushed. It felt like they totally slapped it in at the last minute to finish up the season. At least give some hints throughout the arc, dammit.
I'm not so sure about Stars though. I actually like the anime version of this story arc more than the manga version. Usagi seemed to have more character development in the anime than in the manga. And the part in the manga where all the Sailor Senshi were possessed and taking shots at Sailormoon made me laugh more than anything.

SuperS was probably so annoying because they decided to focus it entirely on Chiba-usa and Pegasus. I'm not saying that I don't like her character but it felt like they put all the other characters on the back burner (or at least stunted their development). Although, I have to admit I did like Sailor Moon's form after getting her power from Pegasus.
Stars was undoubtedly my favorite series. But it's like they were saying that Seyia had to physically be a guy in every sense of the word in order to have a budding relationship with Usagi which didn't have to be the case. However it isn't a big enough complaint for me to say anything negative about this series.

Yeah the thing in SuperS was true. They focused so much on Chibi-Usa that after a while I began to imagine that Chibi-Usa was jumping and waving her arms in front of the screen, screaming "Its my show! My show dammit!" What was worse was how much they dumbed down Usagi to make Chibi-Usa look smart. Granted Usagi was little immature, but she could be serious and thoughtful. Compare Usagi in the S season to the one in the SuperS season. Thankfully they made Usagi regain a little dignity at the end of SuperS.
Still I don't see how Seiya and Usagi can have a romantic relationship with any degree of sexual tension (even if one-sided) if Seiya was not male in one form or another. Although if Seiya was female all the time it would explain how Usagi seemed so blissfully unaware of Seiya's advances at the end of the season.

Just recently I watched the dubbed versions of the Sailormoon movies and I thought I could talk about them here. I wish the anime had such good animation. The fight scenes were pretty good, especially in the R movie. However, I think I like the S movie the most since it actually had some good character development for Luna. Which movie do you guys like the most?
