View Full Version : There is still some good in humanity

With all the horrible news about people mistreating or hurting each other, something like this is rather refreshing.

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2007/10/04/boudros.cancer.farmer.WQAD?iref=videosearch

If you can watch the video, the synopsis is a farmer came down with cancer and was too sick to harvest his crop. The loss would have cost his family about $100,000. Fifty friends and neighbors came and did the harvest for him.

People really can care about each other. :amuse

And after that the fifty friends and neighbors raped his wife, right? Right? :( Otherwise this story is so boring :pek

Something rather nice being reported in CNN ?

Why is it that when somebody hurts somebody else, it's good news, but when people genuinely care about each other it's boring?

I found it a nice change of pace to "witnesses steal the groceries of a man hit by a truck and the one guy who tried to rescue him" and "racist beatings" and "woman kills man over porn collection" etc. :sweatdrop

Anaiya. :notrust Restoring my faith in humanity? How despicable of you. Do you realise how long it's taken me to toughen up to all these stories of mothers boiling their babies and dogs being put to sleep? You've cracked my carefully maintained veneer of indifference. :(

The only thing this story is missing is a basket of kittens.

Wow.

If anything else, NF has taught me that I'm not nearly as much of the cynical bastard as I thought I was. -.-;;

News about people helping each other... NOT GOOD NEWS. Admit it. We liek to hear about killings, weird things, beatings, etc etc. Not people helping each other.

Who cares about the crops, the farmer will die of cancer anyway, no matter how many people gather to help him.

Well, isn't it nicer that he will die knowing his family was taken care of and people care than it was for that woman who died in the street with some guy pissing all over her?

It boils down to the fact that people cared. Plain and simple. In a world where it seems so few people care, these did and they were generous about it.

This can only happen in the country, where everyone knows each other. In the city no one would even notice...

That's a rural farming community. I live in a similar place. Morals are cultivated on fertile ground.

I'm truly amazed. Then again, goodluck finding that kind of news being reported in more densly populated areas (cities).

Heh, I'm pretty pessimistic of people in general. It could also reflect the fact I'm living in a city myself... I think the "dog-eat-dog" attitude tends to rub off.

Kudos to you for seeing this article and posting it up. :)

I've always found it sad that the closer people live to each other physically, the less they tend know and care about each other. In the country, your closest neighbor might be a mile away, but you're more likely to know anything about him than if he was living right next door in an apartment building. It just seems so messed up.:(

You know what? You're right. But, look at it this way:

When in the country, you have less activities that you can do and the closest person is fairly far away, so traveling farther away is a chore. Kind of a 'getting to know them by necessity' thing.

When in the city, you can be more picky about your friends, and often meet them not at your house or apartment building, but in other activities, like school, college, or wherever your hobbies take you to.

Country living does tend to make a more close-knit community.

I've heard this a lot, but I have yet to see any real evidence of it. I've lived in the city and in the country (and in the 'burbs and on an army base, etc. :amuse) and I find them equally entertaining. There are lots of activities out here (I live in the country now) and that's one of the things that makes our community more close-knit; we get out there and do things and meet each other.

Hey, and I have a yard to play in and trees to climb, too. :P

The same goes for the country. As a matter of fact, the need to meet friends at activities like school or hobby gatherings and the like is more prevalent in the country because your neighbors are fewer to choose from.

I <3 the country. :amuse

I should have been more specific. By less activities, I meant, as in, less things like bowling alleys, pool halls, etc. where people gather on a regular basis.

I know that in country areas, get-togethers are common, and they can be fun. When I lived out in the middle of nowhere, our closest neighbor was our land-lord and he'd have a bonfire once a month. They were fun.

About the yard and trees: I live in a suburban area atm, so, I do, too! ... though our 'community' is a bunch of people that don't talk to each other unless spoken to...

Oh sure, we don't have as much of that kind of thing actually in the country, but we have weekly farmers' markets and the local cafe that hosts weekly events, and a very active parks and rec department that always has something on tap. That doesn't even take into account the endless plethora of church and school events. Other than that, I'm only 15 minutes away from the nearest shopping and entertainment centers with all those bowling alleys, pool halls, etc. :amuse

I used to live further out in the country in Indiana and we had a blast entertaining ourselves as kids. We were crazy. :nuts

Aren't those trees great? I bet mine are bigger than yours! :P

I never understood suburbanites, at least where we lived. It was like they were stuffy or too good for each other or something. I totally do not understand that kind of environment.
