I have the gimp installed, I'd use it for everything if it didn't die fairly regularly. It is a windows port so it's bound to not work so well on windows =\

What the... when did they add a new interface? I don't remember reading anything about this in the Gimp mailing list either... (then again I haven't been paying too much attention to it...)

Personally I like the 2.2 interface quite fine, especially after configuring it a bit, though I can understand why people would want a more familiar photoshop-like interface. Ah well. Say, Stonewalker, does this mean that you use Gimp as well? And you use Linux?

OMFG, whats really wierd is that i was just having a problem with my photoshop..and i was lookin for some alternative program to use...THANK GOD FOR NF! lol

its a great software, but I've heard that it seriously sucks on windows >__<;; never tried to config it for a windows comp before, but I think the guys that did GIMPshop are going to fix that prob

I usually use Linux for everything, except for playing certain games and using Photoshop ( because they don't have a stupid linux version T____T)

Linux is alot more stable, and I needed it to run a rendering system for work (windows would crash under the pressure :D )

I tried out GIMP a really long time ago when I first grabbed onto RedHat 7.

I'm thinking of slowly switching to GIMP now that it has an interface I'm familiar with XD

Gimp is awesome, though I like PS better on windows.... I was almost done with something fairly cool when pop, it died. Back to photoshop with me.

It likes to open the CLI for some reason too, mostly to tell you that the fonts are fucked up. Keep your GIMP on linux kids :p

Hrm, does it mess up anything outside it's own directory? I'm not that much into ruining windows but won't care if the prog itself crashes from time to time. Recently my PSP is closing without any reason from time to time, too. -.-

I installed GIMP for windows, but it just always freezes when it's loading the fonts. Is there a problem with this? Or should I download the linux one or something?

EDIT: Okay, it's working now. I just had to wait like... three minutes for it to load.

=_=;; Well, I don't have photoshop so this'll be great! I don't really care if it shuts down time to time cause I got a free program now. <3 Thanks for this post.

woah, it really does work on windows??? o.0;;;;

I just DLed it on my linux comp and it works so perfectly. a dream come true T_____T

I'll try it out on windows and see how screwy it is XD and maybe see if someone's did some tweeking so it works on windows better (I could have sworn there was a windows one, oh well) *runs off*

I've installed it and gimp works fine but gimpshop closes at the beginning. :notrust
Any tips? (I'm using win98SE)

StoneWalker
04-15-2005, 08:14 PM
hmmm, don't know. It's not made for windows yet so you'd expect something screwy to happen XD

try re-downloading it

Rio
04-17-2005, 12:22 PM
Nope, there is a Windows-version in the News/Update section. (The other one couldn't be opened at all but this one I could install without probs until I try to open it.)

04-17-2005, 11:32 PM
woah, there really is one o.0;; I'm gonna try it out right now, hold on..

[EDIT]

I just DLed it on Windows and it works fine.

But I only saw a version for WinXP only, maybe that's why T____T

just doodled something up quick;

Stone, you use tablet right? gimp uses natural brushes (ala painter) or just normal brushes like photoshop.?

Asmodeus
04-18-2005, 07:13 PM
Yeah, painter has a whole crapload of natural burshes...of course, if it could do both...wow, lol.

StoneWalker
04-18-2005, 07:15 PM
Photoshop has natural brushes too XP

GIMPShop has both natural media brushes and normal hard brushes. You can make custom brushes too, if you want things more painterly, more dry media-type brush style, etc

[I am teh Haruka]
04-18-2005, 08:58 PM
Are there any GIMP brushes that I could download? Cause I really don't wanna make my own right now. =_= And how about some GIMP tutorials? Cause I only know the official site has some.

Can we use photoshop tutorials for GIMP? Some stuff that is in photoshop isn't in GIMP... so that's the only problem. =_=;;

So what is better, PS or GIMP shop? coz i use Gimp.

StoneWalker
04-20-2005, 08:15 PM
depends what you mean by 'better.' They both work the same.

But if you want to go with what the majority, get Photoshop
If you don't want to buy/pirate a copy, then get GIMPShop

rokkudaime
04-21-2005, 09:33 AM
Paint pixel uses photoshop and her pieces have smooth outlines. i tried that in gimp but it doesnt seem to work as well. maybe beacause its my first and i dont have wacom tablet. ill show what i colored when im finished.

StoneWalker
04-22-2005, 12:25 AM
?? Its harder to get smooth outlines in Photoshop than it is with GIMP o.0;; XDDD
For me, its harder. I think its because GIMP's brushes are naturally softer and blend well if you have good pressure sensitivity on your tablet pen, or even a good optical mouse

Photoshop brushes stink unless you make good custom-made ones :D bwahahahar

PaintPixel is teh master, I don't think one can achieve that level of work without time and practice XD

People always ask what programs are better to use, and there's always the same 2 answers:
1.) it doesn't matter, just whatever turns you on
2.) Use teh -insert App here- because it roxxorz and everyone uses it!!1!1!!!

I've just started to use GIMP, but I think its a worthy subsitute for Photoshop. The interface is slightly different, but not by much, and it takes a while to get use to it
You can use the same Photoshopo keyboard shortcuts in GIMPShop too

']
Can we use photoshop tutorials for GIMP? Some stuff that is in photoshop isn't in GIMP... so that's the only problem. =_=;;

depends what you're trying to do. with any software its best to get ergonomic with the tools and setup before jumping into tutorials

no problem n___n how's GIMP working out?

I'm trying to find a way to change the brush sizes so they can be changed to infinite sizes instead of the standard ones they give you (those brush sizes are a pain in the arse)

Im just a noob at gimp as you saw on my pic. idont have gimp shop. i have gimp 2.2.6 on windows and it rocks. I dont even know how to make my own brushes. i use what they have at the moment.

the gimp is good and linux is good as well. it took me a while to get the pressure sensitivity working but now i am happy and can draw again. I have been using gimp on windows for a while but it always messed up, no errors yet on linux.

Uhm, I have both The Gimp 2 and Gimp Shop for Windows XP and no problems so far. My only problem is that I can`t use it properly. Gotta find some tutorials about the whole layer stuff used for colouring. I still suck at colouring. Graarrr.

Oh! Oh! I can tell you how to change brush sizes!

You'll have to define the shortcuts though. Go to the preferences area, and choose "interface". Choose "configure keyboard shortcuts". Now just choose "context" and assign any shortcuts you want, like '[' and ']' to brush size increase and decrease and the likes. I also assigned something to increase and decrease opacity by 10% (no need for 1% imo).

Now you have to make a custom brush. Because the default brushes cannot be modified. Another thing is... well I haven't found out how to change your default brush yet... but it's not like I think it matters. What I did is find the brush folder containing all the round brushes, and deleted them all! If you can change the brush size and everything yourself, why bother with them? So from there, you can have a modifiable brush as default. Hope this helped!

StoneWalker
04-26-2005, 10:54 PM
omg. thank you so very frikkin much. IT WORKED IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!

Mizura, why are you always so helpful? T______T

bwahahahar, GIMP shall dominate the world with its free-app fury and open-sourceness! XD

StoneWalker... you are so cool! ^_________^

StoneWalker
04-26-2005, 11:05 PM
Yes, I am XDDDDD .n_____n.

MIZURA!! I can't try this out because I'm not at my own comp for this week, but;

is there a way to import photoshop brushes into GIMPShop, or do I have to make my custom-made ones again?

And can GIMPShop handle .PSD files so you can switch from working in PS to working in GIMP?

Mizura
04-27-2005, 01:01 PM
Hmm, Gimp(shop) can't handle Photoshop brushes yet to my knowledge. So I recommend that you open Photoshop, select the brushes you want, just use them once on a layer, save as png, import into Gimp and save the result as a brush. Should work! You could just do that with all the brushes you have on one png file. Then once in Gimp, just crop, save as, undo and repeat. ^_^

As for handling photoshop files, yes, Gimp can open Photoshop files, I think you'll have to install some other program first though. I forgot what.

Edit: Gimp brushes are in .bgr format. To find the brush folder, find the Gimp folder, then share -> gimp -> 2.0 -> brushes.

To open PS and EPS files (whatever), you have to install Ghostscript, says here: http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/faq.html .

You might also want to modify your interface a bit... now that your default brush is a handy dandy modifiable one, you don't need that many things open at once. I recommend that you completely close down the right bar. Also, hide all your tools, I suggest learning the shortcuts instead. I've also gone into "preferences to hide the background/foreground colors, gradient and present pattern, which I find redundant. It all leaves me with more place for other stuff. Here's what I'm left with: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/vvankerck/gimp.jpg

It's considerably less clutter. You just have to learn the shortcuts. ^_^
- paintbrush: P
- ink tool: K
- pencil tool: N
- eraser: shift + E
- default colors (to change to B&W): D
- switch fg and bg colors: X
- color picker: O
- color picker while using the paintbrush: hold down ctrl, it converts the paintbrush temporarily to a color picker
- move up and down layers: page up, page down

etc.

This is kinda like a compact convertible or a nice minivan ;p

pretty much put in the same colours as my photoshop (found teh awesome theme somewhere). I think GIMP's interface is cleaner than photoshops too for some reason, easier to manage.

[EDIT] AND I GOT MY WATERCOLOUR BRUSH INTO GIMP!!! I gotta put it back in 'cause I did something stupid and it disappeared, BUT I GOT IT IN!! W00T!

I'm so pro XD

Mizura
05-04-2005, 06:18 PM
So you managed to get your Photoshop brushes in there? How did you do it then, care to share? Of course I'm not interested in the least since I don't use Photoshop, but some people reading this thread might be interested. :amuse

Seriously though, learn some of the shortcuts, then close/minimize that tool bar. You can open something more useful in that space, like the Tool options or the color selection tab. ^__^ Did I mention that to go up and down layers, you use "page up" and "page down"? "home" for the top layer, "end" for the bottom layer. Quite handy. Since the name of the layer should appear somewhere, you can just hide the Layers tab and open something else as well.

Thanks StoneWalker!

I've dld the version for Windows...it's ok but there are still some probs..i.e. I can't see any help files as it doesn't install correctly. Even after a reinstall it doesn't work properly.
I think I'll stick to Photoshop till they release a more stable version for Windows XP....

Just got GIMP, and you have to download the help files from their website. It's like www.gimp.org,then you have to go to the gimp for windows page. go to automated installer, and the logo will turn brownish, and in the downloads screen, go to additional packages.
