View Full Version : Should Simon/Yoko have died ?

We've seen the insanity of this series since the beginning, it's epic quality cannot be measured .. but I'm sure there are people other than me who felt quite a significant anti-climax with the epilogue ending. To go from where she was, Yoko becomes a principal in a tiny school on an island .. Simon becomes a hermit-like character, literally the opposite of what he's been through the rest of the series. Sure the others were doing something a bit 'bigger' e.g. Viral was going on a space mission, and Gimmy & Darry were doing something, but they don't really matter, despite Viral being awesome .. Simon & Yoko were the only ones alive that were significant in the fan's memories as part of the Gurren brigade. I said before they aired the finale that Simon probably needs to die to make the biggest impression as the hero of the series, and to be honest I would have been satisfied with ending it completely at Nia's dissolution at the wedding.. continuing on, I think the only way to do both Simon & Yoko complete justice to their fans would have been to kill them off in the Anti-Spiral battle. Especially Simon.

it probably would have been better for them, but there would not really have been a scene to kill them after the wedding was over. The way they lived after was alright I guess, Yoko went back to how she was during the timeskip and Simon went back to how he was in the beginning as a simple digger lol

The TTGL multiverse depends on Yoko's boobies to survive, so no Yoko shouldn't died.

No, Kidd, Ailac and Zoushi should've lived instead.

Was I the only one who also had an issue with how they lived during the timeskip ? The characters agreed with me at least. :oh

Simon as president didn't suit him. Lazing around, making political decisions does not suit the leader of the Dai Gurren-dan. Personally I think the creators of the series wanted to convey to us that the time-skip situation actually did suck, and that's why they gave us all the Gurren Lagann space action we got. They could have only killed them off against the Anti-Spiral force, which is perfectly reasonable to me. The anti-spiral has been strong enough to resist all spirals for all time until then, including the Helix King; Simon & Yoko dying against him or as a result of him wouldn't be an injustice to their characters in the least.

No, Kidd, Ailac and Zoushi should've lived instead.

It's with all these characters' deaths that would have made Simon/Yoko's deaths more fitting.

congrats on your 1k posts.

Well I think the point was to keep the Simon/Nia wedding and showing Nia's death the way they did. Simon needed to live in order to have that scene, and there weren't any fitting moments to kill him after that.

nope. I'm happy both of them did not die. I would have been happier if Nia didnt die as well. :trytocry

I think that at least Simon should have died together with Nia rather then spending his life alone without her.

If they would have stopped and not showed the epilogue I would have been happy because they would have left it open ended.

But the finality of the epilogue and how Simon turned from GARlock to humble "nobody" in his own words..:(

I wished they had shown him at the end of his life with the universe in good shape. Then he wakes up in the afterlife, young and in his prime, with his head on Nia's lap and her smiling at him. Then Kamina could have come along too.

Like that Gainax scan.

Yeah...they both should have died. I don't think either of them has any reason left to live.

I thought the ending was perfect. It contrasted both of their characters, yes, but it did it in a way that really made you think about the entire show during that moment..how much they changed, rather than focusing on just the ending. It was executed perfectly. I thought the wedding with Nia was a bit anti-climatic...everyone was kind of like "oh..she's gone, ah well," but it definitely didn't ruin the ending.

I agree with this, also Yoko there with Kamina! It woulkd have been much better. I suspect that Simon and Yoko are too important for Gainax to have them die yet. Remember what Leeron told rossiu , that Simon is watching and protecting them from the shadows. If the need arise he will appear just like Yoko did! I wonder what Nia would have done to Simon if Yoko had not shown up in his cell.

I think while we would have had a more dramatic end if Simon had died with Nia or Yoko died protecting Simon. I don't think it was needed. I think they deserved to live on.
