The opening sequence?

What do you think it means? We see what appears to be a space version of the original Dai Ganzan (the one stolen from Thymylph). It didn't look like the government spaceship that became Arc Gurren Lagann to me, but it could have been.

It seems like that was Gimmy, since he had the core drill and the timeline makes sense. Plus there was a woman, who we can assume was Darry. It was a moment of awesome to begin the series, but what were they doing by destroying stars ?

It's hard to believe Gimmy can possess close to that much GAR.

I don't think it's Gimmy because that person had blue hair. Unless Gimmy dyed his hair blue :iria.

It was already said to have been an alternate reality. Granted, it could have been Gainax fooling us, but in 26 where you see all the threads with Simon's alternate paths you can see a thread with what could be the Simon from the opening scene.

Alternate reality seems to be the best answer. It was only in episode 26 that we see Boota evolve, and then also trapped in the alternate reality.

The only thing I'm puzzled with is why they would take such an irrelevant scenario and stick it into the opening.

It's Gainax, who knows what the hell is going on inside their minds. I think they may have put it in just to get everyone excited of what was to come.

An alternate dimension where Simon gets Lagann and manages to get Gurren and their fusion, Kamina dies, and Simon gets the spaced-up Dai Ganzan ?

Gainax don't know to do alternate realities.
