Funimation's One Piece Dub

I copied this from wikipedia.

The now-defunct American localized version of One Piece by 4Kids Entertainment omitted, merged, and changed the ordering of the episodes due to editing. Funimation Entertainment has now relicensed the series and uncut DVD boxsets are slated to be released in 2008, beginning with episode 144. Funimation currently does not have the rights to redub and re-release episodes 1-143 due to Viz Media holding the license for these episodes.

I was intrigued by the last statement. they can't re-dub episodes 1-143. which is very disturbing bcuz jumping into the skypiea arc, newcomers would miss a lot of background info on the characters that was not done justice.
how can they obtain the licence? do they have to buy it? are contracts involved? im not very good at this so can someone explain if it would every be possible to redub the earlier episodes?

After 143 episodes of heavily edited scenes, no blood, horrible voice actors, irrelevant jokes. One Piece will finally be produced by Funimation. A trusted name (Dragonball and Dragonball z). Hundreds, perhaps thousands of potential One Piece viewers were turned off due to annoying VAs, horrible fight scenes, and parts that just dont fit right. 4kids had a chance to do something that would've gained respect - dub the original theme. But the old dudes preffered a shitty rap that does depict the pirate life well at all. May One piece head in a new direction. One filled with things that fricken make sense. Not like poison SUCTION CUPS, getting hit with a baseball bat with no blood, or the list can go on and on.

see, peopel wont' be missing anything cuz it's airing the same tiem as the new one. so unless they flat out get loads of new viewers(which i hope) most will know whut's happening. and new viewers won't matter that much ,cuz it's starting at the beginning of a new arc.

It is kind of obvious that they will get new viewers (most of us here will want to watch and see what kind of voices they use for who and how they flow and how the script works out for them).

You could try calling FUNImation to ask if they have tried to get the first 143 episodes or whatever from Viz, and what they have been told by Viz about the situation (I don't recall FUNI releasing a press statement of them failing to acquire the rights from Viz).

Most likely they were hesitant to give them anything because they don't want them to try to catch up with Naruto's success, freaking losers.

No it's not that, Viz destributes 4kids DVD's and how can I say this without pissing anyone off...Viz is trying to maintain a "business" relationship with 4kids. I know those 4kids DVDs will still be selling (I'm angry at that), and Funi won't be able to dub little garden/ Laboon. But I'm sure as soon as Funi has them they'll get right on it.

Hopefully the dub should bring in ratings, even though Skypiea is long, it should interest viewers. Eneru, plus the fact there's an island in the sky should hook viewers.

Actually, I got interested in One Piece because of the 4 Kids version. I mean, some of the editing was so blatantly horrible that I could tell without even watching or hearing about the edits before hand. Well, I started reading the manga (scanlation as I did read about the edits to the official before starting this), not the anime yet. Still, One Piece 4Kids was decent enough as long as you aren't an absolute purist.

However, I'll likely watch it tomorrow to see what a "good" dub is of this.

everything is god, except for luffy and choppers voice. im kinda mad about zoro's but i can get used to it. i love how the original music is in it. so i say it is a little above average

hey, i never would have been interested in one pece if it werent for the dub lol.
and yeah, i was like 10/11 years old at that time so i actually like the rap and the range of the voices.

but then i realized that there was heavy editing like no blood, and less history and crap.
so i watched anime.

anyway, comparing these voices to the previous ones:

zoro: I liked the old voice better. he kinda sounds like an old 60 year old man.

luffy: i like new voice better. he doesnt sound so immature and unreal/kiddish.

nami: pretty much the same, i had no problem with the past one and this one.

usopp: my favourite voice. his voice insnt so unrealistic, yet is believable for me. gj.

robin: waay better than the accent.

chopper: its all right. i liked the old voices better.

I agree. the old voices definately had a range that made each character unique. I think everyone here could say that the voices accurately portrayed each character

they just needed to be toned down. they were a bit too real, that they were unrealistic so they just needed to be toned down.

I love the voices, so much better than the previous ones. However, I am most pleased with the lessened censorship, no puns every 5 seconds, the original music finally being used, opening/closings, and overall them not driving a fantastic series into a heaping pile of crap.

There were voices never meant to be changed. But I hope I'll get used to them. Other than the voices, the new dub is pretty good.

I like the new voices though I wished they didn't change Zorro or chopper. The old version were better in my opinion. Overall, it good and will take time getting use to.

I personally don't like the new voices that much, but I still find the dub enjoyable because the dialog is just so much better than 4kid's style of insert pun every five minutes.

Threads merged and I honestly don't know how Funi would be able to get the right to redo the past episodes. They are just going to have to try and work something out with Viz I guess.
