Ok this is going to be pretty out there, so just stick with me before you scroll down to the fast response button.
I think that the reason why TTGL was so good is Fanservice. And no, I don't mean Yoko either.
Fanservice, in this case, is anything a show will do to appeal to its own fanbase. You would think that this is the common goal of all shows, but no, not really.
Many times do the director and staff try to "go for something" to the exclusion of everything else that makes a series good. This is usually focus on a certain philosophy, a cosmotheory, some sort of morality, some sort of direction experiment, various stuff really. Many times directors try to pass a message so forcefully that the show ends up just a medium for this.
Not so with TTGL. In it, everyone gets his due.
I mean, sure, there is a prevalent morality and art direction, but it's not forced on you. The staff isn't trying to get famous with this show, not whore out their studio/direction. They're already famous. Instead, you get a huge focus in making things as fun as possible for the viewer.
Awesome fights, great animation, over-the-top action, inspiring cast. Also, every secondary character gets his chance to shine, which of course pleases his fanbase. Not only that, but they pull this off so good, that people usually switch favorite characters per episode. I know I have.
As an analogy, you can think of most shows as a lecture, which is for the audience, but has things to say for itself, and you can think TTGL as a magician's show, manufactured exclusively for the audience, with its entertainment as its only purpose.
To sum up, and I'm not even sure where this is going myself:
Actually I already lost my train of thought, no summary for you.

TTGL was soo good because they crammed more GAR into 22 minutes every week than any other anime did over the space of a season.
And boota, nuff said. :gar

It's indeed awesome, but I was looking forward to hearing a second opinion about the points I raised =)

The show did have it's underlying principles that it did want to convey, but you're right they didn't focus on just one medium within the show. Every character conveyed some of the same principles (Ex. courage, unity, faith in others), while some conveyed their own message (Ex. Rossiu: don't be jealous of your friends). It did provide alot of fanservice, though that may have been to compensate for the fan-slap-in-the-face Gainex did when they killed everyone's favorite character, the great Kamina-sama.

Fuckwin. :3

I was going to say the same thing, but Barak already did the summary for you. Even though the amount of anime I've seen is only very little (I've probably only watched between 30 and 40 series), not very often that I get such amount of pleasure of watching something that only lasts for 22 minutes or so. Never has a series got me so excited of waiting for the next episode to arrive already, either. It was just great. <3

I've taken notes and just sat back and cheer like the gaijin 4 .
It does have everything.

I agree. I was about to make a topic like this one. The show basically "kicks reason to the curb" like its characters and doesn't bother about realism or anything for that matter, other than making something for maximum enjoyment. It almost seemed like they had no formula but managed to create an epic anime.

Yeah, you're right.
However, despite that, they still felt that they needed to do drastic things for a greater plot which may seem bad at first. Kamina's death, for example, and it still didn't take away much except for perhaps two bad episodes which were still entertaining in their own right.
Good train of thought. Gainax just aims to please, whatever it takes.

I have no ideea what IT is..but this show has IT on such a scale that it's mindnumbing..
I have literally never seen something like this before.
It has a soul first and foremost..they tried to tell a story with love and attention..with great characters, great plot, great action and great music all encompased in the themes of love, frienship, humanity, trust and ultimately sacrifice.
It was a story about the potential we all have in us..and that potential could rock the world..
I have nothing more to say.

I'm going to have to agree. This show didn't pull any punches and definitely pleased the fanbase by the overall quality.
