A big problem is that in the anime there was nothing holding them in place, they just kind of....stayed there....so any real life incarnation will have ugly things sticking out from them to hold them in place :arg

so any real life incarnation will have ugly things sticking out from them to hold them in place they didn't look that ugly. don't know exactly why the trend died so quickly but i think it had to do with them not being able to fit in your nose good enough and always fell down if you were not careful the ear part wasn't enough to hold them in place

one word: acrylic

i went to an acrylic shop and they made them for me. i just made a working cardboard mock-up.

in case that you want to build the yourself, buy acrylic (or sintra), get an special exacto knife, which cuts plastics (i have seen that knife on craft shops, the brand is Olfa), use a metallic ruler to guide you on your work.

for bending, use a little bit of heat and pliers.

as for the glue you can use, instant glue that contains cyanocrylate bonds acrylic.
