Utada Hikaru, Rachael Lampa, Amy Lee, Van Tomiko, Mary... uh, forgot her last name... She's the girl that sings all of the songs from the Silent Hill 3 soundtrack. That's all I can think of for now.
Also, these people are listed for their vocal ability; not depending on if I like or dislike their music. I just simply think they can sing very well.
Cant think clearly for some reason and as usual I'm probabily missing about a dozen
Female vocalists:-
Vienna Teng, Poe, Bic Runga, Elysin Fields, Karen (from The Innocence Mission), Imogen Heap, Aretha Franklin, Heather Nova, Tori Amos, Bjork, Joanna Newsom
Male vocalists:-
Jeff Buckely, Chris Martin, Lead singer from OURS (forgot the name >.<), Frank Sinatra, Sam Beam (Iron & Wine), Freddie Mercury,Sufjan Stevens, Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, Conner Oburst, all members of CSN&Y , thom yorke and Johnny Cash
================================================== =======
My critera for vocalists inst genre or range. Rather, its how the exhibit their emotions while singing. Alot of ppl will look at this list and say
"Conner? Bob Dylan? Yorke? BJORK???"
Yes, granted Dylan has scratchy vocals, granted Conner has an off key voice, but they are brilliant vocalists, their range might not be in par with many of the singers that will be mentioned in this thread, however, their vocals entrance you and take you to a trip into their most inner soul ( i mean, just listen to Sugar Baby by Dylan, his voice might be as scratchy as could be, but my god does it send a shiver down my spine whenever I hear it. It;s just explodes with emotions and raw sincerety). That is a quality which is exremely hard to cross upon in terms of vocalists nowadays.
