What if Itachi didn't kill his clan just to test his powers. I have no theory on any other reason he would have done it. But just for argument lets say he didn't have a choice. Let's say Madara had something to do with it. Maybe Itachi knew he could not defeat Madara on his own. Maybe he knew he needed another powerful Uchiha to assist him. Knowing he couldbn't simply tell sasuke this when all the evidence of the slaughter was piled against him, he told sasuke to hate him and become stronger and to one day seek him out if he wanted to avenge his clan. Maybe he knew that if sasuke thought Itachi slaughtered his clan for those reasons that would be the ultimate motivation to become powerful enough to kill Itachi. And when the time came and he sought Itachi out, he would tell him the truth of that day and together finally with sasukes aid they could kill Madara.:nod
Obviously if this were true though, sasuke will not listen quietly and it would be explained as their battle progressed.
