MINNEAPOLIS - The entire span of an interstate bridge collapsed into the Mississippi River during evening rush hour Wednesday, sending vehicles, tons of concrete and twisted metal crashing into the water.

The Interstate 35W bridge, a major link between Minneapolis and St. Paul, was in the midst of being repaired when it broke into several huge sections.

"There were two lanes of traffic, bumper to bumper, at the point of the collapse. Those cars did go into the river," Minneapolis Police Lt. Amelia Huffman. "At this point there is nothing to suggest that this was anything other than a structural collapse."

The Homeland Security Department had received no indications Wednesday night that the collapse was related to an act of terrorism, department spokesman Russ Knocke said in Washington.

"At this time, there's no indication of a nexus to terrorism," Knocke said.

It was not clear how many people were injured. WCCO-AM reported that one body was seen being pulled from the area, covered with a blue sheet.

An estimated 50 vehicles plunged into the water and onto the land below, the Star-Tribune reported.

A burning truck and a school bus clung to one slanted slab,

The bus had just crossed the bridge before it crumpled into pieces, and broadcast reports indicated the children on the bus exited out the back door.

Ramon Houge told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that he was on his way home from work on the bridge when he heard a rumbling noise, saw the ground collapse and cars go down.

Traffic was bumper to bumper and hundreds of people would have been involved, he said. He said cars backed up as best they could and he parked in a construction zone and was finally able to turn around and drive off the bridge. "It didn't seem like it was real," he said.

Dozens of vehicles were scattered and stacked on top of each other amid the rubble. Some people were stranded on parts of the bridge that aren't completely in the water.

Local television stations captured video of injured people being carried up the riverbank. There was no official word on injuries, but dozens of rescue vehicles were there. Divers were also in the water.

Gregory Wernick Sr., Rockford, Ill., drove over the bridge shortly before the collapse. He stopped to get a drink nearby and heard commotion so he went back.

"I figure I crossed about 10 minutes before it happened," he said. "That's just too close to call."

He was standing about 200 feet away on top of a parking ramp with large group of people.

"I've never seen anything like this," he said.

The arched bridge, which was built in 1967, rises about 64 feet above the river. Workers have been repairing the 40-year-old bridge's surface as part of improvements along that stretch of the interstate, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported on its Web site

This has been on the news for the past two hours.

I wonder how many people are going to get sued for this one.

1 casualty reported so far? I doubt it will be below 10 after the damage report is collected. Why the fuck were they letting that many cars on the bridge while they were still repairing it?

That one guy who crossed 10 minutes before it collapsed is a very lucky man indeed. Is it still on the news now? What network?

Yes it is on CNN, Fox News and MSNBC

Wow, it is good that at least the school bus got across before the bridge collapsed.

It says here (http://www.gulfnews.com/world/U.S.A/10143672.html) that 7 were killed.

Minneapolis: A highway bridge collapsed and hurled vehicles into the Mississippi River in central Minneapolis during evening rush hour on Wednesday, killing seven people and injuring dozens, officials said.

Cars were crushed under huge slabs of concrete, flipped onto their roofs or thrown in the river as the 40-year-old bridge, packed with vehicles in nose-to-tail commuter traffic, collapsed with a thunderous roar.

The US Department of Homeland Security in Washington said there was no indication of terrorism in the disaster.

"It will be a very tragic night when it is over," Minneapolis mayor R.T. Ryback told reporters. "Obviously this is a catastrophe of historic proportions," added Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

The 150-metre span of the steel and concrete bridge, which carried an eight-lane highway and was under repair, buckled and fell into the river and onto concrete embankments at about 6:05 p.m. CDT (2305 GMT).

The span had stood about 20 metres above the river.

Minneapolis city officials said more than 60 people had been taken to local hospitals. Seven people were confirmed dead, but they said they expected that number to rise.

Dr. Joseph Clifton told reporters that his hospital, Hennepin County Medical Center, had taken in 22 injured, six of them in critical condition.

One man was dead on arrival, having drowned. "Most were blunt-type injuries, in the face and extremities," Clifton said, adding many suffered internal injuries.

More patients, and deaths, were expected, he said.

"I saw them carrying up a body -- I don't know if he was alive or dead," said Andy Schwich, who arrived at the scene on his bicycle a few minutes after the collapse.

A truck was exploding in fireballs, he said, and there were numerous cars either on the remnants of the bridge or in the river.

The cause of the disaster was not yet known, state police said.

Gov. Pawlenty said the bridge, which was built in 1967, was inspected in 2005 and 2006 and the Minnesota Department of Transportation found no structural defects. Work was being done on the concrete surface, signs and guardrails.

Ryback said some 50 cars involved in the collapse had been searched by rescue workers.

Rescue boats and divers searched the water on a hot evening as thunderstorms threatened the area.

One yellow school bus carrying about 60 children had a narrow escape, remaining intact despite the destruction around it. All those on board were rescued, although 10 were taken to the hospital for treatment.

A freight train was passing on a track running under the bridge when it collapsed, and the train was cut in two, WCCO television reported.

Eight kilometres of the Mississippi on either side of the collapsed bridge has been shut to river traffic, a spokesman for the US Coast Guard in St. Louis, Missouri, said.

The river, the longest in the United States, is a major transportation route.

Witnesses said they heard a rumbling sound as the bridge collapsed.

"First I heard this huge roar," Leone Carstens, a nearby resident, told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "I was at my computer. Initially I thought, Wow was that an airplane?"

Steel pilings stuck out at angles from the riverbed, huge chunks of concrete appeared to be floating in the debris-strewn water, and plumes of smoke rose from the site, a Reuters eyewitness said.

One witness said she saw people swimming in the water seeking safety and half-submerged vehicles. Injured survivors were led or carried up the embankment.

The state transport agency said 200,000 cars a day use the steel arch bridge.

I'm considering making a study of this for my final-year civil engineering project. It'd be interesting to find out the reason behind the structural failure and try to reconstruct it as a model.

i was watching this on the news last night and they were showing live video and there WAS a school bus on the collapsed part of the bridge...

think about if you just drove over the bridge and looked in your rear view mirror and saw it collapsing o.o and you'd think "i'm glad i didnt leave 10 seconds later"

Yeah, I was thinking about the engineering. "You know an engineer's going to get fired," was what came to mind, because hey, someone has to take the fall. :amuse

According to the latest, the coroner has four sets of remains now with 20 people still missing. :\

And here I was thinking that one of Phlly's bridges would go first. Every time I go over the Walt Whitman Bridge into Jersey, I can't help but cringe at the sound of the steel. ::winces::

There's 7 dead now eh? Last time I checked there were 3.

That must suck...

Actully right now they say four dead, butthere only counting the bodies in the hospitals not the ones at the scene. I've been watching this on the news for a while now. This is quite scary because i live about an hour and thirty mins. away from there and i've been on this bridge quite a few times to go to Mall of america, the zoo, and on school feild trips. Luckily I don't think anybody I know was in this.

So was it just the structure that caused the bridge to collapse?
