In a discovery that has stunned even those behind it, scientists at a Toronto hospital say they have proof the body's nervous system helps trigger diabetes, opening the door to a potential near-cure of the disease that affects millions of Canadians.
Diabetic mice became healthy virtually overnight after researchers injected a substance to counteract the effect of malfunctioning pain neurons in the pancreas.
"I couldn't believe it," said Dr. Michael Salter, a pain expert at the Hospital for Sick Children and one of the scientists. "Mice with diabetes suddenly didn't have diabetes any more.".......continued in article
Listening to NPR today and overheard this story. If you know what Diabetes can do to your life, you know that this is huge.

That is amazing! :D
I just hope this isn't a "one time case". I hope they can reproduce the same results it until it is truly a fact.

This is big news if this leads to a similar and reliable cure for humans.

This is where the story was originally. It's also almost a year old. if nothing has gotten onto major news by now, this isn't relevant I don't think...

Oh great, this is what we all needed: another reason for dumb Americans and Canadians (I don't want to insult anyone personally with this) not to pay attention to what they eat. /sarcasm
Instead of getting addicted to pills and cures, just solve the problem at source maybe? Diabetes isn't the only negative effect of unhealthy eating habits after all. :/
I think it's great news for people with Diabetes type I though, since they are born with the disease and don't have themselves to blame for it.

an important breakthrough but given its over a year old it seems not as much progress has been made as one would have hoped.

If this so-called cure happens to work on humans, it would be a breakthrough for the scientific world at learge. The affect that it would have would be immediatly seen and the people of the world (especially america) will be healthier!

It's a year old, so chances are they fucked up and lost the cure or something like that, so no point in getting worked up over nothing.

I'm not going to give my hopes up until it's proven on humans.
Well, ok, lab-mice are going to benefit from this. I am not holding my breath for the treatment until it is certain and tested on humans. Actually, I wouldn't mind being a guinea-pig for it since I am going to be a poor student. And well, I am going to Toronto, so HEY IMMA TESTIN UR MEDS!

The problem with this is that it will take years to test the long-term effects, and they could be drastic. If something can have that profound an effect on the body over a single night, imagine the kind of long-term damage it could do. Chemical imbalances, psychological issues...
Unfortunately, this drug is still a long shot.
Here's hoping it makes it.

Probably not the best overall attitude to take with such a serious and widespread disease. I'd have to say that an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure when it comes to diabetes.

Certainly interesting. I'll remain conservative until they can show me some results based on human testing. That's going to take a while.

Human testing started last year and is expected to take a year or so before you'll hear anything about the results. Medical researchers don't typically report constant updates, only final results. It's only eight months old. Give it another four to six months and we'll probably hear how it's going.

Heh, just because it works in mice, doesn't mean it will in people. A lot of those drugs that work in animals end up not working on us, and then they have to re-work 'em to work on humans. From what I've read, that happens A LOT.
