I'm planning on purchasing a Shin Megami Tensei game, and was just wondering whether my money is better spent with the Digital Devil Saga games or Lucifer's Call (Nocturne). Opinions would be much appreciated!

Well, if you like a challenge that comes close to sheer frustration, yet is very rewarding, Lucifer's Call/Nocturne is a safe-bet.
Really though, I suggest getting them all, DDS2 is supposely a bit dissapointing to some, but they're all great games with a good load of depth and wonderful story-lines. If you like DMC then Nocturne is a very safe bet, in any case. Prepare for plenty of grinding and getting the temptation to toss your controller, though.

Lucifer is right their all good games Lucifer's Call is abit annoying though in the way you have to keep the main character alive. I can't comment on DDS cause i haven't played them yet. Another SMT game is Devil Summoner which i'm playing atm, it is quite good although some of the battles can be a pain.

Devil Summoner is... alright. I've heard great things about Persona, too.

Hmm that doesn't sound like very good news lol the grinding in FF3 on DS drove me crazy.

Grinding in SMT is far from tedious. Some of the bosses are really fucking hard, though.

Indeed. If you ever plan on taking on any optional super bosses (especially on Hard mode), you either need extreme luck or you damn well need to stick your head into the metagame. Otherwise, prepare to see the Game Over screen a lot (although it's not as if you won't see it enough in Nocturne as it is, but at least it's a pretty aesthetic Game Over screen).
In regards to choosing between Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga:-
Nocturne: More challenging, a wide range of potential allies to recruit, better concept, multiple endings, and of course, Dante.
Digital Devil Saga: A bit more beginner friendly, much better skill system, voice acting, and much better characterisation.
Pick your sauce, really.

Lol, posting after Rhys. <3
Depends on what you're into as well, if you like something more group orientated, I'd suggest DDS. You get a group of people to choose what they master in and what skills you want them to have, whereas in Nocturne you really only have to worry about your main character [the demons you get to help you level on their own terms and get whatever they are predetermined to get].
I found Nocturne to be harder then DDS, and I liked the story plot moreso then DDS as well, though its easier to relate to the characters in DDS as opposed to Nocturne. Plus, if you're a DMC fan, you get to play against and with Dante in Nocturne.
Devil Summoner, in my opinion, isn't that amazing at all, and unless you're REALLY bored, I wouldn't suggest purchasing it over DDS or Nocturne. It has a strange battle system that they were trying out to see if people liked it, and no one really did.
You can also look forward to Persona3, which is coming out shortly.

Get Nocturne, the DDS 1 and 2, then Devil Summoner.
In that order
