OK~~ I like to help with translations and I have good views on life and stuff.... so ask me about Translations(that you think are a bit iffy) and life(sometimes you need a new view) and stuff like that... yeah, I'll try to get back to you in a timely manner.
Also please note, I don't have it out for any translator. I mean, the more we understand of the chapter... the better we end up... right? So in the end... everyone wins. So be gentle.... :thumbs

Examples of translations I have been asked about before are...

http://forums.narutofan.com/showthread.php?t=13812 which is an important thread and....

A Pm I have received before....

Well, I'm sort of wanting a confirmation on two translations...

Chapter 158, page 05.

Chapter 217, page 05.

On chapter 158, Inane version, it's said that Yondaime was the greatest shinobi to ever exist. I think this one is correct, but I'm not sure.

On chapter 217, Gaara states that Kimi is out of chakra in panel four, but I think he's talking about himself. So this is the one that I'm calling a mistranslation on.

By the way, the thing that lead me to PM'ing you was that topic about chapter 144 in which you were correcting translations and such out of people's requests... It's appreciated to have someone like you around for translation accuracy.

And thanks.

haha no problem and good calls. I would eventually get to these chapters, seeing as I'm going through and re-translating the inane chapters to see if they got em right. But yeah, I don't mind doing them in advance.

As for the first chapter, I have it done by Knives... is that what you have? I checked the downloads at Narutofan.com and it's the same one they have so I'm guessing it's the same.

Anyways... off to the corrections~

Chapter 158. Knives did a very good job, I just thought some places should be changed a tad bit, but for the most part correct.

フン・・・
ジライヤ
umm....
Jiraiya...

この子は前の弟子と違って少々口も頭もおまけに顔まで悪いようだね。
It seems that this boy is worse than him(your previous apprentice) in terms of speech, intelligence, and to top it off, looks.

四代目と比べられりゃ誰だってキツイだろーよ
When comparing against the 4th, anyone would have a hard time.

なんせ あやつは忍びとしての器は歴代一だった。
Anyways, He was the greatest Shinobi in all of history....

術の才に溢れ頭脳明晰・・・人望に満ち
Full of talent, clear headed... very popular.

まぁ・・・ワシ並みに男前だったしのォ
and well, handsome like me too.

・・・だが
その四代目ですらすぐ死んだ・・・
... But....
Even the 4th died quickly.

On chapter 217, Inane didn't quite get who was talking, good catch. It should go like this....

オロチマルの洗脳か・・・
虚しい奴だ
Orochimaru's brainwashing eh...
You've got no soul.

大技を使い過ぎたな・・・
チャクラもそう無い・・・
I've used too many big attacks(high chakra depleting attacks)
これで最後だ
This is my last chance(shot/jutsu etc)!

There ya go. Let me know if you want anything else cleared up.

Questions like that, stating where and what you are having a question about is appreciated ;)

YES! Three cheers for trendwhorism.

I hope you don't mind if I ask some translation questions, because that is what you're known for.

1. Is manga written mostly in Hiragana, Katakana, or Kanji?
2. Was written Japanese hard to learn? Or rather, HOW hard was it to learn?
3. What do you do in Japan?

1. Is manga written mostly in Hiragana, Katakana, or Kanji?
2. Was written Japanese hard to learn? Or rather, HOW hard was it to learn?
3. What do you do in Japan?

Haha, that's the whole point of this thread ;)

anyways- here I go.

1. Depending on the manga it can vary. So~~~ here's a definition of the thre styles.
Hiraganaひらがな, squiggly lines that make up most of any manga. Particles and conjugation are made up of these wonderful little things.

Katakanaカタカナ, Used for borrowed words or names, or really strange dialects, or well for made up words. Like, for example, my name would be written in Katakana, but that doesn't necessarily mean that Japanese people can't have their name in Katakana either. My grandma-in-law's name is in Katakana.

Kanji漢字. Those things every gaijin (foreigner) fears. Luckily for easy manga like Naruto, or things found in Jump, they have something above them called furigana. That is generally hiragana over the kanji so you know how to read it. Katakana also appears but is much more rare. An example how the manga Naruto sometimes does kanji is like in the previous chapters, they will have a kanji 弟 which is little brother, and in katakana above it have the word ガアラ in katakana. meaning that Gaara is the little brother. So it's important to be able to read at least lower level kanji because they sometimes like to make what they are saying a bit clearer that way.

There are two kinds of manga, well other variations are also out there, but Naruto is a shonen(little kid's manga). Manga like Tenjyou tenge(I translate this too) would be considered a seinen(adultish manga) due to reasons like brief nudity, sexual situations and all that jazz ;).
Seinen manga is also loved for it's Lack of furigana, which makes beginner translators all squirm with happiness, and headaches as they try to and try being the key word, to read the manga without the help of a kanji dictionary.

2. Learning how to write japanese is a whole new ball game. Many japanese people suffer from a thing called word pro baka, which is taken from word-processor baka. In other words, they can read and write stuff on a computer, but when it comes to writing it.... they draw a blank. It's becoming more and more common because of their cell phones and the all their assingments having to be typed up and not written. But alas that is life.
How am I getting over it? Well I have a nice PDA that I use to practice writing. I use a program called King Kanji, that checks your stroke order as you write the Kanji. It's very nice and I recommend it to anyone that has a pda to try it. A pc version is also out, but unless you have an electronic pen, I don't recommend it. Kanji gold is another program that is very good in helping you remember kanji. Give it a try. It's free.

3. I'm an English teacher :o. Yeah, but I've been here too long, and don't speak enough english that well... my english is going blah- So yeah, not the best teacher, but in comparison to a Japanese teacher I stand out very well :). I also Teach Japanese which you can find out at my site. So yeah, even you can learn a tad(ok a bit more than that but....) with a 1337 Japanese teacher ;).

Hope I answered the questions well enough.

Yosh! Njt ownz!

Hmm, when did you move to Japan? You're married if I remember correctly, true? Where are you originally from and do you plan on remaining in Japan for some time to come?

I moved to Japan in May of 2003. In two months marks my 2nd year :).

Yeah I'm married, got married in July in 2003.
I'm American, from Utah. Yeah, I'm mormon but don't practice regularly... but still somewhat religous....
But I lived all over America went to well over 17 different schools. Why? because I used to live in motels and my parents got kicked out of them because of domestic violence, so I did the whole motel to trailer park, then to a house where my room was a closet, then to a real room, then to an apartment then back to sharing rooms with one of my 4 sisters(I have 7 in total) and yeah- due to various reasons had to go all over america/utah because of one lame reason or other.

I plan on staying in Japan for another year (depending if I have enough money to continue my college education) perhaps longer... Only time will tell.

Any more?

Can you explain basically how the on-yomi work, and why?

I'm confuzzled.

I would love to go into detail as in my ideas of how it works, but here is a site that explains it much better than I could....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onyomi

if you want me to give it a brief break down I can....

The on'yomi (音読み ) of a kanji (also called its on reading or Chinese reading) is based on the Japanese approximation of the original Chinese pronunciation of the character at the time it was introduced.

The kun'yomi (訓読み ) of a kanji (also called its kun reading, Japanese reading, or somewhat misleadingly its native reading) is a reading based on the pronunciation of a native Japanese word,

Best way to learn Kanji is practice, and repetition...
Use Kanji gold (google it)for the repetition. For practice try chatting with people, or reading. There is a saying if you read 1million words of a foreign language (in use, not just vocab lists) that you can become close to or pretty much native in that language. I think it's true- but probably haven't read 1million words yet, but heck- wasn't counting ;).

Hiragana just cram it in, keep up with the japanese though and feel free to ask any questions that come to mind.

How long did it take you to learn Japanese, and if you've only lived in japan for less that 2 years, then did you learn japanese from before you moved there?

njt
03-19-2005, 10:23 AM
I started learning Japanese about 6 years ago. Had a cool teacher for my first year of Japanese, but the second year she moved away to get more education and we got stuck with a lame teacher, that well... didn't know how to teach... anyways- It was pure self study from there. I bought every teach yourself book I could get my hands on as well as took advantage of the tourists that visted my area. (lots of japanese people around) So it was nice- and I got to speak a lot of japanese. To help in my conversations I would take note cards and would write down things I wanted to say. To save on space in my back pocket I would write really small, and things that were of importance. When I saw a Japanese person I would go up to them, and do a joke in japanese, if they were japanese they would laugh and that's how I started the conversation. I would talk until I couldn't say what I wanted to, and when that happend I would remember what I wanted to say, and try looking it up later.

Because of all that I think I progressed really fast. But there comes a point where you decide that you are fluent and well, it's hard to progress after that. So that's why I'm using translating to take me up even more levels. Being fluent in one language is one thing, being able to accurately translate back and forth is a completely different story. So. that's what I'm doing~ helping you guys, by helping myself...so in short we both win ;).

ah- and here's a site that I used in my beginning stages of learning www.thejapanesepage.com I actually visited this site before it was an actual domain, it started as one of those geo city sites... yeah- that was the day ;)

I honestly don't know. All I have heard is bad things about viz and their Naruto translation. I have been in Japan for 2 years, and near the end of my first year I started watching Naruto. From there my interest in Japanese manga/anime grew. So I'm really a noob when it comes to anything regarding manga and how it goes since I've only had a year experience with it.

So---- unless you know Japanese it's kinda hard to really know if you're missing out on anything in the translation. But I'm guessing they are doing a good job. Unless they are trying to americanize it so that it loses it's soul...

But heck I think you should support the authors, not the american companies. Learn japanese and buy the real manga- :p

But yeah, that's just my prospective :)

Like stated above, I got the job for extra pm storage... and yeah- just making ummm doing what I can when I can :p.

Hmmm, while my time is limited, I work 40+ (lately around 50 hours) per week, plus teach japanese on my spare time, have a baby and family to "play" with and stuff to translate. My time is very limited, but I try to have a fun time when I can... But generally stick only to the translation / theory threads so that I can check those translations and help those, that are forming theories on mistranslated japanese....

But---- I do mindless post sometimes, just don't really have that much time to do it...

Er, not really. At first I thought WTH was I going to do... but then yeah- I thought(and follow this to the T) that "everything happens for a reason" and so I just followed it out. Turns out, that me being married and having a baby so early was one of the best things I have done. I've got to stay in Japan for a lot longer than say, I wasn't married. That and, in the past year, both my mom and dad passed away, 5 months apart from eachother. (my mother of lung cancer due to smoking 2packs of smokes a day) and my father, from well... long story, and better summed up as an accident. So my mom got to see my wife and kid before she passed away, and the same with my father. so I think it worked out quite well. and so am happy with the way things are happening.

Here's my question:
People have stated that Jiraiya stated Rasengan is more amazing than Chidori and not more powerful as it was originally translated. In the context in which it was used, can "amazing" imply "power"? I'm trying to clear up the possibility that "more amazing" could imply that Rasengan could actually be less powerful. This is more of a "meaning" question rather than a "wording" question.

hmmm well, if it's trying to state that it's stronger/more amazing then chidori it would use this kind of wording, chidori yori sugoi/ that would then mean yes, it's stronger than chidori. Even though it's the word amazing.
But another way to say amazing is subarashii, if that word is used... then it might lean more to the non power side, meaning that it's better, but not necessarily stronger... hmm that's a tough one, but refresh my memory where it's at.

Ah, so are you saying even in context that Rasengan could be a weaker jutsu than Chidori, since Jiraiya only states it is more amazing, which does not necessary imply more powerful? If so, then doesn't this mean the translations we've been seeing that say "more powerful" or "stronger" are wrong?

not really. For example, two people are fighting, and one pulls off a stronger jutsu, and then the other character says "ore no jutsu yori blah-jutsu ha(wa) sugoi" that would indeed mean that it's more powerful, it's all about context...
But generally saying one jutsu is sugoi-er than the other would mean that it's got something over it, so in this case it could be power... or it could be ease of use, or less chakra useage... etc-

see what I mean...

I see, because I was debating with some people saying that "amazing" implies "power" since Chidori is very powerful and Rasengan is more sugoi. This goes along with when you said "But generally saying one jutsu is sugoi-er than the other would mean that it's got something over it, so in this case it could be power..."

Other people said it doesn't imply power, but more amazing could mean anything, like when you said "...or it could be ease of use, or less chakra useage... etc-"

What's your personal opinion?

I was wondering. How do Japanese folk stereotype Americans? And Europeans? And new Zealanders and Australians?

And, why is it that everybody in Naruto looks western, and a few Asian, but no black people at all?

Hmmm, I'm not sure how they stereotype americans and the lot, Generally it includes a big nose and a weird accent.
As for why there isn't any black people in naruto, perhaps they are trying to keep it as Japanese as possible. Believe it or not some Japanese people get really white, and then some get brown and then there is yellow... but none ever go black... so that's probably the reason they stay with those colors only... I doubt they have anything against black people, just how they view their own culture...

I see, because I was debating with some people saying that "amazing" implies "power" since Chidori is very powerful and Rasengan is more sugoi. This goes along with when you said "But generally saying one jutsu is sugoi-er than the other would mean that it's got something over it, so in this case it could be power..."

Other people said it doesn't imply power, but more amazing could mean anything, like when you said "...or it could be ease of use, or less chakra useage... etc-"

What's your personal opinion?
hmmm My opinion would be power, because they generally don't say a jutsu is powerful any other way...
Plus Japanese is always indirect that way....
But even though it's how I "feel" about it doesn't mean that it's correct people inturpret things many ways, this is just mine.

haha, actually I'm against beer and the like, since my mother was, and I don't want to do the same thing she did to me, to my family.

Anyways- as for normal drinks that I like....
I like cc lemon, and when it was still around cc grape. As well as coke, pepsi(depends on my mood and what I'm about to eat, as to which I choose)
Green tea- and Jasmine tea.

but my favorite soda, would be vanilla cream http://www.sodaking.com/product_info.php?products_id=161

great stuff :)

er, sorry about being lame and not drinking- but yeah- if you had to live what I did because of the stuff, you'd think twice too....

haha, well ummm.... I dunno, I worked at a place that I had to do telephone surveys, and had to ask lots of questions and write things in detail.... and I was also debate team captin. And so I tend to explain/talk more than I should and give more detail than really needed.
But I feel it helps things a little more. If you understand more about me, then you understand why I am the way I am....

But yeah I'm just complicated, and living with a mixed up brain due to trying to master Japanese by forgetting english (well trying to) and then having to use it and teach it, so finding that I need to study it more and so yeah here I am. Writing to get my english back to at least "normal" level.
Which you didn't even need to know

Blah- I talked to much again....

a bit confusing eh?

ohh well...that's how it just came out

njt,

1. who are you

I'm NJT, a fellow translator and forum helper... I could go deeper than that but it would just get boring...

2. do you know me?

Of course I know you- you're that hermit(notice I said Hermit, and not pervert... You know what I mean ;) ) that posts a lot in the bath house... I mean, Who DOESN'T know you....

3. your fav beer?

None, don't drink

4. do you like tequila?

There are different brands?!

5. do you like my bath house?

U Dan Straight I do-

6. what kind of girls/boys do you like?

I like smart, asian(any race is fine with me, just my type tends to lean more toward asian women), physcially fit girls with a fun personality and sense of humor.
I like 2D fighting game masters(2D fighting games are my roots), RPG experienced(FF fan :) ), book as well as street smart guys.

7. why did ya make another "ask thread" (answerin that u re bored is not allowed)

Because I wanted to have a place for people to ask me questions about "unsure/questionable" translations as well as life in general.
I've experienced a lot in life, and want to help people as much as I can

8. what do u like doin in ya free time?

When I do have free time (which is quite scarce) I like to read books/manga and study. There aren't any worthy video gamers around my area to play
so I haven't played 2d fighting games in a while....

9. hows the weather?

It was raining but now it's partly cloudy. Spring has just started- and so I'm loving life :).

Hmmm my pet weasel, well it's 21 this april, but I call it another name ;)

(Hehe.)

haha, we don't sit on the floors as much as you would think. But yeah, when I do, it's annoying (some restaurants are like that. You sit on the floor.) More than my but, my back gets tired. I kinda need the back support or I get tired.

As for our house, we do sit on the floor. But there is a hole in the floor where we put a table (small table) over it, and then a blanket sandwhiched between the top of the table and the base of it. So that the blanket covers where you would see the hole. That way, when you sit under the blanket (it often has a built in heater) you can get warm and you don't have to cross your legs and so it's a tad bit more comfy :).

But yeah- I miss a nice comfy couch....

haha, well it appears you are off line, hope you slept well anyways-

Ok, to the questions...
Hmmm yeah--- Ebay might have some couches, but we wouldn't have room anywhere to put it...

Japanese people, as a whole, aren't very social (of course you have social people in ever culture) But for the most part they are grown to be the same, and not create an outburst (though lately that's changing and the "in" thing is to be "abnormal".
So--- if you really want to get to know someone well and all- it's a good idea to get introduced first.

As for the getting lost due to crowds. Nope not really, gotten lost before but it wasn't the rest of the people's fault. Just my blah sense of directions.

Also, I live in the country, so noooo huge crowdes here. Sometimes lots of traffic, but that's about it. When I lived in Yokohama there were TONS of people all over all the time. I actually liked it-
I'm a people person.

Yourself?
Ummm while I don't really like to brag about myself. I like how I'm not afraid to talk to people, help others and admit my own mistakes.

Your wife?
That she can put up with me. That and we often read manga together which can be QUITE fun~

What's not to love about hina? I mean it's hard to single it out. But if I were to choose a favorite something it would be seeing her smile :)

Microwaves?

Could you help me translate a kanji from Oro's immortality jutsu?

I translated the furigana to 'Fushi Tensei', and then went to translate it, I got fushi = eternal life and tensei = reincarnation, but since that sounded kind of weird I decided to try and translate the kanjis, but I couldn't translate the second one (and searching through 400 kanjis wasn't fun at all):

不 = fu = non, negative, bad
I couldn't find the second one and I can't type japanese characters (although I can see them), but it doesn't look like the kanji for 'death' (which was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the 'shi' in the furigana), it's in page 270 of the 2nd character databook, here (http://img83.exs.cx/img83/2244/27011dz.jpg).
転 = ten = revolve, turn, turn around
生 = sei = live, birth, life

I guess if you were to give this an english name it would be more along the lines of "Un-dead reincarnation"

不(fu) Un-non
屍(shikabane) corpse(dead body)
転生(tensei) reincarnation

hope that helped ;)

More translation help! :)

It's chapter 247 page 13, I know you already corrected inane's version, but still it doesn't make much sense to me, they are talking about Oro and how he became a traitor and suddenly Sasori says he doesn't what'll happen after he uses his jutsu :confused now that's random XD

Now that we know a little bit more about akatsuk and jinchuuriki, and the Hero Book which even helps in this page, i think you could make a more clear version of this page, right? ;D

I think Sasori was talking about Oro's jutsu, and that he has now idea how oro looks after using it.

And in the bottom-right frame i think Sasori said "after all, our opponent is a jinchuuriki", and not "can use jinchuuriki"

Am i right....? :laugh

K here is the chapter again~~

★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
そうか・・・
Ah, right...

おろち丸んとこにやったやつよりこっちが先か・・・うん
Before we go and get the guy that we have at Orochimaru's place, let's get this one first. Yeah...

Note "that guy" is refering to someone that they used their jutsu on at Orochimaru's place.

仕方無ぇだろうが・・・
That can't be helped

術をかけた後どうなるかなんて俺も知らん
I don't even know what will happen after I use my Jutsu.

その袋だけで大丈夫なのか?
You sure you'll be fine with just that bag?

相手は”人柱力”を使うんだぜ・・・
After all our opponet can use "Jinchuuriki"

*Note* It means power of human sacrifice, or so I think, /me thanks Kishimoto for the made up words. Anyways, When I thought about what that could mean, it hit me. He's obviously talking about Gaara, and the "sacrifice" that he can use, which is his mother that is in the sand that he uses as his weapon. Just my two cents on it, but I think it makes sense that way.

なんせ相手は・・・
any how, our opponet is....

★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★

As well as the stuff that the hero book brought up...
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

大蛇丸の下にもサソリの「毒」がまわっている…?
orochimaru no shita nimo sasori no "doku" ga mawattte iru...?
The "poison" of Sasori has spread to someone serving Orochimaru also...?

Taken from http://forums.narutofan.com/showpost.php?p=825722&postcount=14

Anyways---
Ummm I don't know how to change the trans to be something other than this. I'll try to explain the tougher areas for you though.

術をかけた後どうなるかなんて俺も知らん
I don't even know what will happen after I use my Jutsu.

What he's refering to is, well the mind jutsu that he uses. He uses some sort of mind jutsu that either makes them forget or covers up their memory so that they can't "snitch" on the Akatsuki. Anyways, what will happen to the person, after he uses that jutsu is out of his control. Since, they are, in a sense their own person. Perhaps he's saying that they can(possibility) break free from it. But yet- that is for us to assume.

☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
To make it a bit easier to understand I guess we could change these expressions...

おろち丸んとこにやったやつよりこっちが先か・・・うん
Before we go and get the guy that we have at Orochimaru's place, This one is first. Yeah...

術をかけた後どうなるかなんて俺も知らん
Even I don't know what will happen after I use my Jutsu.

相手は”人柱力”を使うんだぜ・・・
(Remember) our opponet can use "Jinchuuriki"

as well as...

なんせ相手は・・・
After all, our opponet is....

※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※
As for the opponet using "jinchuuriki" that's how it's said...
Even though they do later refer to them as "jinchuuriki", they still said he can use it.
My notes for what I said there still seem to fit for that situation, so--- it should still be self explaintory.
But just to be sure, on the following changes I consulted Nihongaeri, and--- thus certain changes were made. But what is said, is translated as close to the original as possible, with the ambiguity and all.

Ossu! thanks :)

So the guy they have at orochimaru's place is under sasori's jutsu, and sasori doesn't even know what has happened to him after using it.

And it's weird that they say he can use jinchuuriki and later they just say he is a junchuuriki :blink
But i think it's not such a big deal...

Well thanks for clearing that up! :Gaipose

Er, the manga isn't in both Japanese and English... I just looked at the manga (japanese one) around chapter 90-ish, and found the Japanese that matched your English. Well it was a bit different, so I checked the Anime as well, and it was the same as the manga, so-- what you wrote was a bit off. But ohh well.

Favorite manga character of all time... him... A tie between Kirua(from HxH and Lee....

# Are you like a typical bloke in the sense you find having to "tag along" w/ Rie while she shops an excruciatingly boring experience? XD

Yeah... sadly to say, my weak point is shopping. I mean, I'm fine with it occasionaly, but unless I have a lot of energy, the whole shopping thing can be way boring... :s. That is, unless it's a book store, or an electronics store... in which I can spend quite a while... :p.

# What do you think of Bush?
Hmmm actually I haven't been following politics all that much, seeing that well- ignorance is bliss, and I wouldn't really be able to do much anyways...
But from what I've heard, I feel we should have a smarter, more literate person in the office... instead of someone that is un-educated and just the govenrment's tool, and not the people's tool.

# If Hina could have any talent (besides super kawaiiness), what would you like her to have?
Hmmm besides awesome people skills, I would say kick ass gaming skills :p. I love playing fighting games, and thus would love to have someone skilled to play with me. (wife is against it though... *naku*)

I think I've seen three different translations for this chapter's scene. I was trying to figure out what Itachi said to Kisame about facing Kakashi.

One Inane translation was obviously wrong. The anime translation said he won't be forgiven if he touches that man. Another translation simply had it stated that that Kisame would take too long.

I was curious because if it was said that he won't be forgiven then there might be someone, like Itachi or another member in Akatsuki that doesn't want him dead for some reason.

Thank You NJT

What's your take on Japanese racism? Or is it exaggerated?Well... I'm not NJT... so maybe I shouldn't be responding... but I don't think that racism is all that bad in Japan. Sure it exists, that is, you definitely get treated differently if you don't look Japanese, but it's far from unbearable.

Then again, I think certain people will end up experiencing more 'racism' than others... that is, discrimination due to not being able to speak Japanese. I'm sure that some people will feel like they're being racially discriminated against when this happens, but the truth is that the more you're able to speak the language, the more you're able to blend into the society, even if absolute integration is impossible due to racial features...

Anyhow... I don't think non-Asians have it any worse in Japan, than Asians have it in America... although the two are a little bit different...

My Dad got treated like crap when he was in Japan, but then he looks like a Spanish bandit. What's your take on Japanese racism? Or is it exaggerated?
I think Nihongaeri handled this question right. I think racisim really has to do with where you are and how you act. If you draw attention to you, in a negative way, then you'll be subject to racism. Also, some people are just blah... so it's hard to say they are racist or not. But for the most part, Gaijin are loved :).

Do you mind these sorts of questions?
haha, not at all. I know, because I've asked the same kind many a time :). Plus I'm pretty open ;).

XD Ask NJT thread!

A few questions about Naruto fandom in Japan! What are the main differences between Japanese fandom and non-Japanese fandom (what you basically see here)? More precisely:
- specific views on various characters? In what way do they diverge from what we see here? Significant evolutions? (character with falling popularity, character with rising popularity)
- how popular are such and such pairings? Apart from yaoi I guess, though you can answer that as well. I know that KakaIru constitutes like two-thirds of doujinshis in Japan, followed by SasuNaru, and SasuSaku is apparently the only popular het pairing. :notrust Have you noticed any significant changes in tendencies?
- a small side pairings'-related question: do Japanese view cousin x cousin relationship as incestuous? I'm just curious as to how they'd view NejiHina, as apparently KibaHina and NejiHina are the two most popular Hinata-related pairings (I might be wrong, it's jus that I've heard that NaruHina isn't That popular in Japan)
- what Naruto pairings do you support, or are you neutral on this point?

Thank you! XD

Edit: oh and, another question: when is Tazmo going to host the cleaned up version Shannaro has released of the Databook 1 raws, if ever? -___- It's just the size of several manga chapters, and I'm sure it'd make a lot of fans who aren't aware of the existence of those scans yet happy.

hmmm
Well, I did study that way for the beginning, I bought about every teach yourself Japanese book I could find. And around my area there were lots of Japanese people, so I made friends with them, and chatted with them. Then I got a Japanese girlfriend that helped TONS.
But yeah- trying to speak in Japanese is a very good way to learn. You can check the following sites to learn Japanese for free.

www.thejapanesepage.com I used that page when I was just starting, it's nice.

www.nihongoresources.com has some really good lessons, along with a dictionary that you can use as well.

or you can just use my service, you can find that at my site www.udanstraight.com
sorry that I charge, but I do put in a lot of time and effort into the lessons, and it'll take over 5months to finish, so... I think what I offer is a good deal.

i just wanted to ask what the japanese word for "finished"..if u can..can u also show me the japanese symbols for it...note: my computer cant read japanese symbols..but if u can..do show it as an image file d=)..thank u

njt
04-21-2005, 01:40 AM
well there is different ways to say finished.
like finished with a list, 以上 (ijyou) *more like this is all*
finished with something 終わりました(owarimashita) or 終わった。(owatta)
you can also say 御仕舞い (oshimai)

But yeah--- if you can't read/write/speak japanese nor view it on your computer what would be the purpose of this?
Right now my laptop is broken so I can't make it an image, but when I can, I will update my post. :)

hmmm well you can't translate names into japanese, but you can write them in Japanese using words that kinda sound like the names. Also know that they don't have L in japanese, so--- your name will sound as if it's an r-ish d-ish sound.

Lloyd= ロイド Roido
Giselle=ギセル Giseru

I liked the ep where lee fought gaara and the ep where lee was drunk boxing. dunno, that was just an awesome part in the manga :D

njt, i dont know snything in japanese, can you tell me how i write Hyuuga Neji, in japanese, i just dont remember if it is harg... or (sdslgkjha). OMG, i really, dont know jap!!!! pease answer me!!!!!!

ummm never became a mod... so--- can't do it :p.

Japanese n00b asks, is there any Katakana or Hiragana characters for the letter j? I can't find any, yet there is the letter j in Japanese, like in "Romanji"
In japanese there are only a few letters that have just one letter, they are a i u e o and n (I guess you could consider を a single one as well, it depends if you write it as wo or o though :p. )
anyways the rest have are two letters one a consonant and one a vowel.
it would go like this..... Kaか Kiき Kuく Keけ Koこ etc.
to get the "j" letters it would require using "ten tens" which are things that look like our quotation marks. " they would be attached to the letters sa-so. But the thing is, only one of them turns to a "j". that is shi.
so it would go like this....
sa-za
shi-ji
su-zu
se-ze
so-zo
as you can see, with the ten ten the letters sa-so turned to za-zo except for shi which turns to ji....

sorry for making this soo long just wanted to explain it thorougly.

hmmm something that amuses me would be their enthusiasm that they show even for the stupidest of things.... that and their commercials :p.

hmmm I would probably have to go with Shizune ;).

I hated having to fold socks. (my step mom would do the laundry with all my sisters and since I had soooo many sisters and they didn't know what to do with their socks they kept buying more, until the sock bag thingy got to the size of two pillow cases and then my stepmom would make me pair up the socks. Not only did they have to be the right ones, but they had to have the matching stains as well... to know that was the right "pair" GOD how I hated that....

goshujin-sama would just be an honorable way to address someone's master. Goshujin alone would be a person's husband.

as for the thank you, there are many ways, but generally the longer it's written the more strength it has. But to be even, I would say doumou arigatou, and domo arigato are just fine. The first having a tiny bit more respect, appreciation tied in with it :).

蟲分身 mushibunshin

Nose of the Wolf
狼の鼻 ookami no hana (er, where did this come from?)

Here is the translation, notes and what not are in red :)

For the most part chapter 158 was right, just this part was a bit off... the little dot inbetween battle and medical treatmeant means And, not in.

chap: 158

その戦闘・医療術には未だ肩を並べるものはいない
her skills in battle and medical treatmeant can't even be compared
*Note, This is what he says, but I'm quite sure he's saying that she's the best in battle, but more that she's well balanced in both, and in comparison to that, no one exists.

chap: 159

お前ほど里の者たちの身を案じてる奴はいなかった・・・
there wasn't anyone there that cared about the well being of the village's people as much as you....

あの時だって・・・
like that time when...

そのぐらいで説教は止めろ!
enough with your preaching!

Sorry but in my opinion the sasuke-naruto and the gaiden series had some of the worst translations.... Just keep looking forward to my new site, I'll admit I've been lazy EXTRA lazy the past month, but I'm back on track and it should be out soon :).

ナルト
Naruto

お前の事だ・・・
Knowing you...

必死だったんだろ・・・

ok i have many questions...
1.I am taking japanese next school year.Any tips for a 1st year student?
Yeah, Japanese is fun and easy, all you have to do is try, and realize that Japanese and english is different, learn japanese as japanese, not as a conversion from English to another language. Also, you'll make mistakes, that's true for any new language, just learn from it and grow, never not try because you're afraid of failure.
2.If and when i move or visit Japan, what would you recommend to visit?
hmm I would say go to Tokyo and see the places around that area (note, tokyo isn't really a fun city, it's the places that are around it that is fun, they are...
Akihabara (electric city) Shibuya(trend area) Ikebukuro(pretty neat) then go to Yokohama (pretty place) Sakuragichou(a nice place too) if you can, try and visit Kobe and Osaka as well, to see/hear kansai japanese too.
3.Can you teach me to write and speak in japanese?(you can send me prvate mssgs or u can just post it here.Also...
Sure, I teach/tutor Japanese check out my site for further details www.udanstraight.com
4.What is Japan like?
Japan is like any other place, just smaller with lots of people lots of electronics(in the city area that is) the country is green with lots of space, and good people. I don't know, it's just a fun nice place to be in.
oh yeah... does my name mean anything in japanese?
er, not that I know of...
(if its something stupid pleeeease send me a pvt message i guesss lol...)

I'm Naru-chacha, and I have to say that you have been a great help among all of us at the Naruto Forums community, keep up the good work, man.

I have a few questions/requests, if you don't mind.

1) Does "Jigoku no Senshi" mean "Soldier of Hell"??? (can it be interpreted on another adjective also??)
a] If yes, can you write it to me in Kana (Kanji & hiragana symbols), especially the "Hell" kanji?? (my brother's such a pest)

2) How do you say the following (along with Kana)???
a] I think you're very beautiful
b] Wanna go out with me?? (to the movies??)
c] I hate you!! (Directed at my neighbor, I need to see his reaction)

I really appreciate your help, man. And keep up the lessons.
Thanks

Ohayoo!

I really need some help with translating this paragraph. I translated it from Hirgana and am sure this is what it says. Here it is in Roomaji.

Watashitachiwa sensei dewa arimasen.
Seito desu.
Honda sensei wa watashitachi no Nihongo sensei desu.

It just throws stuff together that confuses the hell out of me. I don't think it follows on from the previous passage but here it is anyway in case it helps.

Konnichiwa.
Watashi wa Honda desu. Nihonjin desu.
Nihongono sensei desu.
Eigo no sensei dewa arimasen.

It's all simple japanese for you I assume but that paragraph with Seito and Honda confuses me so bad. Thanks so much for any help ^_____^ :glomp

Watashitachiwa sensei dewa arimasen.

=
私たちは先生でわありません。
watashitachi = we
sensei= teacher
de wa arimasen = are not.
=
We are not teachers

*****

Seito desu.
=
生徒です。
seito desu = (we are) students. (This is where Japanese can get confusing, since Japanese likes to cut the subject you have to pay attention to the beginning of the sentence to find the subject for english :).

*****

Honda sensei wa watashitachi no Nihongo sensei desu.
=
本田先生は私たちの日本語の先生です。
honda sensei= Mr/Mrs. Honda
watashitachi= our
no nihongo no sensei desu = Japanese teacher (no is the possesive particle)
=
Mr/Mrs. Honda is our Japanese teacher

So all together the first part says
We are not teachers, we are students.
Mr/Mrs. Honda is our teacher.

K, given this information~ try and figure out the one you didn't understand before ;). you can do it :thumbs

Hey njt, me again. This is an old school one. Can you translate Chapter 26 Page 4 and 5? Thanks.

For the most part it was correct (just as one would expect from ak of troy)
Just one part that seemed a bit off-.

"芸がない”と凄んではみても
やはりしゃりんがんは怖いか・・・ザブザ

You threaten my technique by calling it "just a copy"
but you really ARE afraid of my sharingan.... zabuza.

K this is kind of a liberal translation- let me break it down for ya ;).

芸がない in here, the 芸 is taken from 芸能人 or in other words performer/ person that appears on tv a lot ;). Anyways- when he says
芸がない he's refering to Kakashi's Sharingan as just a thing that copy's that if he didn't have any opponents that he would be nothing, and as such he could never match up to the real thing.
So in other words, he has no techniques(of his own)

then on the next page, perfect except the translation of gekkeigenkai, which i changed and then added a note.

And his jutsu surpass even mine. The terrifying ability of a "gekkeigenkai"
The geekeigenkai is often refered to as the "blood line limit" or like what kimimaro had with his bones and stuff :p.

sorry for the delay~ enjoy. :)

soredemo
is more of a but(still) however type but.... but the demo is a strictly but... but.

so to sound easier

demo = but however
soredemo = but (still), never the less, and yet, even so-

hoped that helped :).

If they wanted to say Rasengan was stronger, they would have used "tsuyoi" and made no bones about it. Jiraiya's opinion is biased, not to mention that the only thing he said was its more "amazing".

I wanted to know the japanese wording of Itachi's words to sasuke, you know "foolish little brother, if you want to kill me.. blah blah" up to "then, someday when you have the same eyes as I do.. come before me." (or something like that..),... would be cool if you could help me ^^°

Page 151 of volume 25, if you want to know ;).

Just one quick question. Is your friend Japanese?
If not, then if you want to scare your friend, it'd be best to say that in English. Better yet, if you are planning on saying it, use a dark voice, that'll scare him more than if it is in japanese... :p

The "poem"
Run...run from the darkness...run from the hatefullness and pain in your soul...run to the happiness you desire but cannot have...run for those you loved and those you hated...run for your life and your mind...and run for you hopes and dreams that you once had...run from your mind sick with madness...run...and run...

And the translation...

望でも手に入らぬ幸福に向かって走れ

NJT, could you give me some good links to learn japanese? I heard about how you learned, but I don't know anyone who can speak japanese, so thats kind of out fo the question.

I have looked around town for classes, but none are offered.

I already have a japanese to english dictionary and plenty of time to learn :)

Also, could you make them links for speaking japanese, not reading/writing? as I figure it will be easier to read and write once i can speak it

Hey NJT. Could you translate the tracklist of a CD i'm ordering by Sambomaster (band that did the 5th Naruto opening) from Japanese characters to the alphabet (but not the English translation)?

It would be greatly appreciated.

Hey.

Well, having read through the whole thread you seem like a cool guy NJT. :leepose

My questions:

1) Why do you hate Sasuke?
2) Earlier in this thread I read that you're pretty sure on the meaning of life. So, what is the meaning of life?
3) If you could have one super power (Invisibility, super strength, etc) what would it be?
4) In Naruto some Kage titles are out of place it would seem... most go according to the Japanese numbers you posted earlier.

ichi

ni

san

shi

go

roku

nana

hachi

kyuu

jyuu

Why isn't Yondaime called Shidaime? Why isn't the 1st Hokage called Ichidaime?

Thanks.

Though this stuff is easily searchable on the net, check www.thejapanesepage.com or www.nihongoresources.com or some other sites~ you can learn a lot from them as well

Hey.

Well, having read through the whole thread you seem like a cool guy NJT. :leepose

My questions:

1) Why do you hate Sasuke?
hmmm Not really Hate (since that is a strong word, but rather dislike, I've always had bad experiences with the "sasuke" like personality.) In other words those that think they are better than a person just because they can do something or is better at something than another person is. Just because one person gets better grades, or does better at a sport than another person doesn't give that person any reason to downgrade another person, because who knows perhaps that person can be/do something better than you.
2) Earlier in this thread I read that you're pretty sure on the meaning of life. So, what is the meaning of life?
Hmm easier read here...
http://udanstraight.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=67
Posted by me a while ago.
3) If you could have one super power (Invisibility, super strength, etc) what would it be?
I would like to be able to teleport(if possible the ability to teleport with someone as well) from place to place :). So many areas I would like to go to, just don't have the time nor money~. But if I could teleport then time and money wouldn't really be a big deal, I could just telepor to where I would like to go while I'm not working and be back for work the next day.
4) In Naruto some Kage titles are out of place it would seem... most go according to the Japanese numbers you posted earlier.
That's because there are multiple ways to read numbers, I just gave the basic way to prevent panic to the one that asked... there are alternative readings for the following numbers...
4, which you could read shi and yon.
7, which you could read nana and shichi
also, regarding the first hokage, he uses the title "the first" which is like in English 1 is one, 1st is well first. The japanese word for first is sho. and the word for second is ni, but trust me, you don't want to get into a counting discussion in Japanese, they have MANY counters for various things, and so it's hard for even Japanese people to keep track of ways to count things... so much so that they have a book to help those that count things wrong... It's called
知ってるようで知らないものの数えかた
a book on how to count something that you thought you knew, but don't book.
http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/4344803744/250-8036102-9694650

Why isn't Yondaime called Shidaime? Why isn't the 1st Hokage called Ichidaime?

Thanks.

There you have it~
Thanks for taking your time to read this entire thread ;).

I actually am thinking that, what really is the point of these little things in Japanese?
I mean- how is this helping you, or another person? :p... I know you're just 13, or so your name says-- but... still, would you be willing to try and learn japanese to say these things on your own? or...?
