Imhotep fights in his regenerated, but not immortal incarnation seen in The Mummy Returns. Gaara is as of the Chunin Exams.
The fight happens in the Geonosis arena of Attack of the Clones.

LOL, Gaara curbstomps him.
When Anubis takes Imhoteps immortality in The Mummy Returns he also takes all his powers as shown immediately afterwards - Imhotep could barely make an alter tremble.

So you're pitting a powerless Imhotep -- less than that of a fodder Naruto ninja -- against Gaara of all ninjas?

Aaargh!!
That was not my intention. I meant Imhotep as seen early in the movie, after eating those mercenaries, when he still had his powers, but lacked the utter immortality that he had back in The Mummy 1 (as stated by the Head Minion/British Museum Curator).
I certainly didn't mean depowered/end of movie Imhotep, because that would bring a completely new meaning to the word "cubstomp".

Well...Imhotep was still immortal at that time as in his rotten state he was getting shot and didn't die. Also please note in The Mummy even when he was fully regenerated he was still immortal. It took the incantation from the Book of Amun-Ra to take away his powers and immortality, rendering him human again.
In The Mummy Returns I think they were just saying that he was vulnerable since the Book of Amun-Ra had been recovered as well...so anyone could read from it and banish him again.
A fully powered Imhotep never showed anything that could seriously hurt Gaara though, making him mortal doesn't change that.

Gaara would win. Imhotep never displayed any abilities that could hurt Gaara.

Could the telekinesis Imhotep shows in the movie be conceivably used to break Gaara's neck from a distance, bypassing the Sand Shield, or something similar? As my question probably reveals, I haven't have a lot of exposure to the series and I honestly don't know what kind of punishment he can take.

If it could, then it just shows that Imhotep is an idiot, because he should have done that to the heroes.
Personally, I think Imhotep might actually be a decent fight for Gaara, if he was the one from the first film. Bringing down the Ten Plagues of Egypt upon Gaara would prove a challenge to the Kazekage.
Though Gaara would still win (unless he has to kill him, but that's not fair since Imhotep is immortal).

Then you obviously haven't seen Gaara create a desert himself, swamp a guy with it and then crush everything around (against Kimimaro).
God, if he went Shukaku this fight is a real stomping.

Now that you mention it, the 10 Plagues of Egypt is actually a fomidable skill/power/whatever. Raining Fire, Floods, and whatnot could actually prove more than a nuisance.

Gaara falls asleep after getting bored of a stupid mummy banging on his sand shield and Shukaku obliterates the pitiful flea.

Imhotep's got nothing on Gaara. Gaara wins.

in this case Gaara wins, cause he was easy with releasing Shukaku at that time. So, even if Imhotep somehow tires Gaara, Shukaku eats Imhotep, his wife, his soldiers and somebody else, who happens to be around.

In which case does Gaara lose? The Chuunin Exam arc IIRC is the first time we see him. :confused

I doubt he would lose in any case, tho he may have some problems if not releasing Shukaku. He avoided using Shukaku the way he used him during Gaara vs. Naruto fight right after this fight itself. So, he became stronger, of course, tho we haven't seen all the possibilities of Imhotep's magic.
Anyway, I do believe Gaara kills him in any case :nod
