Yes, even though it's about baking, which sounds boring, they manage to make it interesting!

It's about this 16 year old kid, Azuma Kazuma, and he goal to make Ja-pan (<-pun), a bread that would represent Japan. He works at a store called Pantasia, along with his two friends Kawachi and Tsukino. What makes the manga awesome is its puns and creativity... you don't have to be an expert at japanese to get them. And they're hilarious.

I saw the first ep of Takitate Japan as a random episode 1 a couple months back. It was pretty good, odd, but good. Thou shalt fear the golden hands!! (I can't remember exactly what the hands were called, it's been a couple months)

The manga I feel is just a lot more funny... I don't know why but the anime doesn't really come close to the manga. Maybe the VAs which can be annoying or not suiting the character's personality(and therefore altering it in the anime).

But the anime is still one of the best new animes but still nowhere near the manga even more so than some fillerific animes out there compared to the manga.

Well when I read a manga i'm kind of more looking forward to seeing a scene animated and stuff. Reading the manga really doesn't kill any fun in the anime for me. Yaki voices and the overall tone of the anime does it... Though as I said it's still one of the best new animes.

Well after watching more of the anime... Well I got used to some of the things I didn't like at first and well it's hilarious.(In the beginning the anime basically killed the manga jokes IMO... as in made it unfunny). Episode 14 and 15 was hilarious and of course the ending is cool.

I haven't read the manga, but the anime is definitely very entertaining! At first, like some of you, I was skeptical about an anime about baking bread. But, after watching it, it was a welcome change from your usual action-oriented mech animes or angst-filled dramas. It's fairly well-animated, chock-full of extremely humorous puns, and is actually informative on various types of bread. Check it out!

For anime, it's always best to follow the rule of Five.

If, after five episodes, you still don't like the show..you can feel you watched a fair ammount of the story to make that call.

Of course, if people continue to say, "No no, you need to watch up till atleast episode 10!", then maybe try it out once more..especially if it's a show like, say, Naru Taru. XD Oh an evil show that was.


Anyway, watching this show brings back memories of my baking classes in college. Aar, I HATED making croisants..way too much work. They were certainly delicious though.

Amusingly enough though, the show gives a lot of wrong info about that type of bread. The curve thing isn't about the moon..it was a way to show if the dough contained butter or not.

I ate way too many straight croisants, hehe.

Well of course the manga is way ahead of all the episodes out right now. The manga was well over a 100 chapters when the anime came out.

Well, regardless of who it is (I'll just take a blind guess and say Kawachi), I'm all for Tsukino x Manager. She doesn't need frail weak newbies like Azuma and Kawachi. She needs a big, strong, dependable hunk to lean on! And then there's the wicked 'fro. What's not to love?

Azuma may be a newbie but he is possibly the best baker ever, he puts the managers baking to shame with the stuff he bakes.

This series is absoulutly my favorite. I used to look forward to it each week more than Naruto or Bleach. Then summer cane, and that means a long break from subbing for many groups. I really hope more episodes will get subbed.

wow, just started the anime...(9 episodes) and I have to say the storyline is intriguing. It really has no romance or action but the storyline is so comelling. Yakitate Japan is probably my fave anime right now. Me and my gf just watched 48-51 last night, and we are waiting for 52 to come out!

The manga is much better than the anime, IMO, since the art is better and more consistent, but it is a lot harder to get the manga and it is easier to share the experience with a group when you watch it. :P

The manager is the best character by far, IMO, but Azuma IS the man, and Pierrot is pretty awesome, too.

I save all my frames in files all the time. In fact I watched the first 9 episodes and just decided to write down the time frames for the scenes I wanted. Afterwards, I went through each episode with virtual dub and extracted the scenes I wanted. The problem is when I pile on so many scenes, it takes me hours to make all of them...*took me over 2 hours to make 18 gifs last night*

Plus I make gifs from other anime all the time...so it gets time consuming XD

Although I have to admit, Yakitate!! Japan is good enough for me to sacracfice some time to make quality gifs.

Narumi Takayuki is a third year high school student, who doesn't study very much for the college entrance exams. His friends Taira Shinji and Hayase Mizuki are both busy with studying and swimming, so Takayuki is left feeling very alone. Until one day, when he meets a girl..

It's very heavy on drama and you tend to get caught up in the heavy emotional tone the series sets...

Azuma can learn things but even he admited he wasn't a good cook because his sister use to make the meals. And when he and Kawachi lived together, he did all the cooking because if it were to up to Azuma all they would have is bread. Azuma said he just usually made suaces and such for his bread, but as for more common meals, he isn't as strong in those areas.

But he does think "outside the box" and comes up with some creative soultions. The thing is that sometimes the decisions were made by luck or someone acting on his behalf...

i.e. They were about to lose on the speed baking contest because Bolneze hated microwave but was saved because that guy from the American team was able to debunk the myth about American lawsuits. It had nothing to do with the taste of their bread, but obviously luck and how one associates the food with painful memories comes into play.

And am I the only one who finds "Kid" funny as hell :laugh

I'm not shocked at all. I've seen 51 episodes thus far...*basically all available subs*

Even though Kawachi beat Spencer in the second match and Suwabara lost the 1st match, I still say Suwabara is a better baker. Kawachi isn't focused enough to be consistently better, so, I'd go with Suwabara. Now all that's left is to see how long it takes the fansub group to sub more episodes, because I see 6 raws that haven't been subbed yet.

Kawachi is pretty good. No doubt, but he just isn't as focused as Suwabara is. And I knew the Monica/Suwabara pairing was going to happen XD

They were allowed any and all ingredients from the royal court. So I assumed they were provided the ingredients by the King of Monoca. But that really was a bad choice. You really don't want to use turtles as a visual for F-1 racers :lmao

Although the story has baking as its main theme, the parts that generate the most interest are the outrageous puns in the story. Especially notable are the puns made by the judges, who go to great lengths to prove a single point about the bread that they tasted.

Can someone give me an example of one of these puns that the judges use?

It was all a ploy for him to win. After all Pierre and Shadow know that Azuma's bread was to die for, so they had to use a bread that would surpass it. One of the important thing to take into consideration when making bread is who you are making it for. And they knew that Bolneze mother had pased away so they used it to there advantage.
