View Full Version : Hikaru no Go

Hikaru no Go is the story of a boy named Shindou Hikaru who visits his grandfather's attic with his friend, Akari, to discover a Goban(where you play Go). Strangely, he sees this blood spot on the Goban but Akari doesn't. It was then that he meets the spirit of a Go master, Fujiwarano Sai, and thus begins Hikaru and Sai's journey together to discover the world of Go!

Well although people may think that , 'What in the world? a manga based on a board game? how boring!' but I disagree. I for one finished reading it without even knowing how to play Go(besides the basics...). The characters and storyline is really full of suspense and surprises.

So who here likes HnG?

Love it.. :D Read it about 3 times. :) It's nice to see how the characters grow up and you actually see it in the art.. :) A bit disappointed by the ending though..

Yes definitely disappointed with the ending. If I remember correctly the publisher wanted it to end fast or something. Anyways, watching the characters grow is especially a great feeling. Specially the art! It's really one of the nicest art style I've ever seen. One nice part in HnG is that the characters actually grow haha...really funny and nice to see Sai and Hikaru mature in their physical aspect.

Yeap, I like it... Haven't seen the end yet '>.> Although I've read quite an amount... Is there some BT site I can get it from or mIRC channel/serve?

I do. I started playing a long time ago (around 4 or 5) but HGO inspired me to take it up again. I love the series. It has a great storyline and excellent character growth.

I have read the first couple volumes of the series, and it's awsome. Interesting how a manga creator can make something so fun to read, just from a game of go...
(Isn't the same artist as the one who makes DeathNote??)

Question: Is the manga ending the same as the anime one?

Sukeo

Manga goes further than the anime does. But there's was one anime special that brought it a little closer to the manga ending. (But didn't go all the way to it)

Are you talking about the most recent special, the one that was kind of like an epilogue to the series? (I haven't read all of the manga yet)

Oh, that China part was nice. I loved the little kid who looked like Waya(name?). Too bad it got cancelled and the ending had to be rushed...I was hoping for Shindou to win. At least we saw Sai one last time.

Rurouni, does KGS cost money? I play on yahoo, but only 'cause its free. I know there are some badass players on KGS, but I dunno if I need to pay to play.

I liked it when he went Uber on that top lvl amature. Forgot what city he was in. As soon as that guy let go of his stone, Hikaru move was done. Lightning fast. After that they made him somewhat suck again. I could understand against really good players like Akira but man. It should have ended better.

I hate when they rush a series, for exampleTokyo Underground. Its final boss battle consisted of one hit, that was it. I was going BS. The story was great but halfway through the series they were rushing to get it done.

Yeah it seemed like Hikaru really leveled up following his comeback from Sai's death. Notice the first game he played since then his eyes turned alot lighter than usual, just like Sai's used to when he'd get really into it. The last match Sai showed Hikaru, against Touya Meijin had real meaning, and when Hikaru pointed out the move that would have led Meijin to victory I think it was then he became another level altogether, so it didnt matter that he took that huge break before coming back to Go, because besides his rank, he had reached a level so high, it was comparable to Touya Akira.

Anyway the series should have ended where the anime ended. The second arc was just a bad idea altogether, and it was missing one of the most entertaining characters, Sai (even though he wasnt at the end of part 1, that was a necessary part to keep, and still interesting for it), though if they had Sai reappear in someone else it mightve gotten really interesting again.

The ending came really suddenly and shocked everyone. I had heard rumours even from the japanes message boards that the mangaka had been threatened by messages from korean criminals saying she portrayed them as too week at go, and the japanese too strong, and hikaru had to lose the match against his final opponent or else.
Well whether its true or not, at least Death Note is such a cool series. Big change of pace though, alot darker.
And Ogata's white suit was pretty sweet in the color chapters (shit my memory sucks I think that was his name..havent read or seen hng in so long even though I was so into it I dled every ch and ep...). I really loved how the series was structured besides the ending. The anime wouldve been perfect had it not removed alot of the comedy of the manga etc., great music and pacing IMO. I never wouldve thought Id read a manga about a board game before then, especially one I knew nothing about.

Also did anyone else read the followup chapter with the two insei kids one of whom idolized Touya Akira and disliked Hikaru, and the other one looked up to hikaru but couldnt stand Akira? Then they each had to play the one they disliked and changed their opinions completely once they lost. And it ended with another match between Akira and Hikaru for the lions tournament? That almost made up for the crappy real ending IMO.

Yeah, Japan's best player right now, Cho Chikun is even Korean! Korea ALWAYS beats Japan with their Lee Chang-Ho, Lee SeDol, Chong Hyongpoon(sp?) soooo many good players :P China is also very good and better than Japan IMO.

Also, KGS is totally free warefumetsu :amuse

what!? you mean the anime started up again after ep 75???? I thought for sure that was the end of the anime. I know the manga went on two the Hokuto cup and had either 1 or 2 one shots after that. Can you give me any more information on the extended anime eps, and who released/subbed them?

In the anime I liked that match with Korean boy. It was great. I was only comparing Hikaru's abilities with other Japaneses players in the anime.

And im not bashing the other countries skill. Its true that Korea and China are better at IGO than Japan. And I do understand your point.

Sorry, didn't mean to sound overly aggresive...I guess I'm biased since I replay a lot of Korean player's Kifus. But yeah, Korea is the top in both real life and the anime(except for the Touyas). Although in real life, Taiwan is starting to catch up to the Chinese/Koreans as well...at least that was the deal a year ago...I've been out of the go world since college started.

Again, sorry for sounding toooo aggresive.

Hear, hear!

Both were great endings, though I guess the manga's was a little abrupt (necessarily so, I think) and the anime left a couple loose ends left, which isn't the way of HnG. Still, just as wonderful as the rest of the series was <3

Remember Hikaru's dream about Sai? It was shortly after Hikaru and Akira's first game after Hikaru returns to the world of Go. Anyway, it was a bit after that... We see Hikaru buy the fan in the last episode, we find out that Hikaru and Akira begin playing each other regularly, and it ends with the tournament being hinted at along with Hikaru and Akira crushing some of the "eviler" old generation pros. We got a special of some sort later, which includes the first segment of the Hokuto Cup, which (as I remember) ends with the team being chosen.

I really liked the ending. Maybe I appreciate it more since I play go. I recentely purchased the elementary Go series, a six-volume set outlining essential strategy, joseki, and tesuji. It was well worth the money I paid for it. I play on KGS, (reccomended by Rurouni) but I agree with him about playing on a real board, as you won't find me on much. HnG is now completely licensed... (manga in 2003, anime about 2 days ago)

check animenewsnetwork.com, animesuki etc. for more details

I read the complete manga and all eps including the (new years) specials. Can only hope Viz sticks to only the series itself, not the specials, especially if you consider there's yet another (new year's?)special (the final one) to be released (Hokuto Cup).

Ok so I just finished volume 23. I had already watched the anime and wasn't at all satisfied with the ending. However the manga didn't end great either. But at the end of volume 23 it says about some special short saga. What is that?

I don't have a clue either. Whatever it is, it's probably something unrelated to the story.

Luckily the anime got to end at the just-right point in the story, where the manga should've ended.
You know with, Sai passing on and leaving Hikaru the fan.
It's better to read the manga first and hate its ending so you can appreciate the anime a lot more.

But I read the manga because I didn't like the anime's ending. I must say though I hated Sai. How selfish can the guy be.

I thought Hikaru was the selfish one... granted it was his body... but regardless...

It was his life, why should he hand it to someone who has already had a life?

Then might as well not lead Sai on and make it clear that Sai shouldn't expect much even if he says he will do something for him.

That is despite Sai being the one to get him into Go which Hikaru basically made the center of his Life and despite Sai always helping him when he needed help.

Should Sai even expect to play? Hikaru knew it would cause too much trouble for Sai to play. Besides he was still playing Hikaru every day.

He was playing Hikaru everyday and helping him.

Should Sai expect to play? Since Hikaru told him he would allow him the day he met Sai, then yes.

Had Hikaru not been intersted in Go, there wouldn't be much trouble in letting Sai play. But he took the interest that Sai gave him and shoved him aside.

Did Shikaru know the implications then? No

Shoved him aside? It was Shikaru's life to do whatever he wanted. Sai was lucky he even existed at all.

So any promise or oath can be rightfully broken if you were stupid enough not to think things through?

Hikaru was lucky that Sai gave him what Hikaru's life is centered upon. Go. Sai as also helped Hikaru no many occasions.

Did Hikaru ever promise who he would play? He did let Sai play every night. Yes Hikaru was lucky, but that was why Sai was brought back to life. To teach Hikaru go.

But at the end of volume 23 it says about some special short saga. What is that? Two short specials were released that provide a slightly more satisfying conclusion to the Hikago saga.

One is mostly a recap of the Hikaru/Touya rivalry and the other features two Insei preparing for the Young Lions tournament.

It was one of my favorite manga series...until the ending.

Why did it have to end so suddenly?!

Just imagine if Naruto ended right after the Valley of the End fight (without even the return to Konoha, just right after the fight concluded). That's how bad the ending was.

At least with manga like Hunter x Hunter we know that it will be continued someday, but with Hikaru no Go it's...it's...I just don't know how to describe it.

Well you can't really state it like that because the artist did Hikaru no Go before he did Death Note or Blue Dragon. Anyway I thought it had a pretty good ending. I can pretty much see what happens afterwards. Hikaru becomes stronger from this loss and will probably participate in the tournament again and then go on winning for Japan and then he gets to higher dans and stuff.

But...but...God's hand, Kuwabara's expectations for the next generation, the rivalry between Hikaru and Toya, Ogata's climb into the upper echelon...

There's simply too much left in the dark. I think my analogy matches quite well.

And it's not really the artist's fault, since the story was written by a different person and he just illustrated it. Unless of course the story was left undone because he left the project...

Well, I don't think the ending was necessarily a bad ending. It was sad in that I didn't have anymore HikaGo to read, but I think they did better than most mangas with the ending. IMO, it should have ended where the anime ended (minus the special) at Episode 75. They did go on after that and set the layout for more and didn't follow through.

The reason I'm not frustrated is because they resolved most if not all of the issues that were created in the initial stage of the series. They didn't cower away from the things I really wanted to watch: like the match between Touya Kouyou and Sai, or the eventual relationship Hikaru and Akira. I was also satisfied with how they brought closure to the relationship between Sai and Hikaru. It was awfully sad, but I think there was a deep meaning behind it. As for Hikaru not finding the divine move, well, I think the point was that it was an endless quest with people passing the torch from generation to generation. As for the rest of the stuff, to actually chronicle Hikaru's and the others rise to the top, that would pretty much mean there wouldn't be a Blue Dragon or Death Note and Hikaru would probably still be a 5-dan. While I do enjoy long running sports mangas, Hikaru no Go is fine by me, too. Basically, Hikaru no Go delivered on all the implicit promises it made at the beginning of the series and I'm happy with that. The Japan-Korea-China tournament was not required, but apart from that, I'm satisfied.

How many here think of Hikaru no Go as being a sports manga? I certainly do. If you like this series, you will more or less definitely like sports manga. So read 'em!
