Unfortunately this board's search tool is useless so I couldnt find a previous thread dedicated to this anime... but I just wanted to say this:
Planetes is one of my favourite manga ever. Its thought-provoking, touching and entertaining, it doesnt drag on and ends perfectly.
I'm up to episode 6 of the anime adaptation and cannot believe what I'm watching.
WHAT IS THIS SHIT!?
Its like watching a year of Naruto filler or something, I'm so let down its almost depressing. Its like 90% filler and 10% manga material.
Episode 6 even had ninja.
FREAKIN' NINJA.
I'm going to go to Japan, find the director and producers, and hurt them. HURT THEM LIKE THEY'VE HURT ME.
Postscript: my opinion may change as I continue to watch this travesty, but the way things are going now, its not good.

Eh, I still thought Planetes was a good series. I haven't read all of the manga but the anime itself had some weird plot issues. My thoughts and complaints are as follows.....
I'll start off with the negatives since there weren't many for me but they were crucial in making this series great.
- Hakim's random burst that he is a terrorist. I felt akward that all the sudden after many episodes of not being shown Hakim than suddenly becoming a villian. His ideologies may have not been the best but he was interesting to see as a villian and how things he asked Hachi were serious. I felt that sudden justification for that girl-haired girl (forgot her name) becoming a terrorist felt a bit rushed there too. Tho when the Lunarian girl talked to her about the earth and all that was neat.
Chin-shen's reaction was stretched a bit too far and felt creepy a person like him going to that lengths.
THEN the main "beef" I have with this series is Hachi and his evil side. Surely that could've been done with instead the wrapped up his dark side with 15 minutes left in the show. I would have rather episode with Hachi and Ai together and there marriage and stuff. The whole Ai getting injuried was out of the blue but was an interesting plot twist nonetheless. Felt the ending in general was rushed and wouldn't have minded that being drawn out.
I felt the series was left on a big cliffhanger and felt really empty with the ending. Felt like they rushed too much to get a story and felt like they couldn't complete on a good note. *wished to see the Ai x Hachi marriagein the future* :'(
Other than the things mentioned above, everything else was great. I liked how the addressed everyone in the show and had character development to each character. I especially like Yuri's background and how he was on board the plane that was shown destroyed in the first episode. And how the 'temp' used to have a husband and that whole scenario. The whole cigarette terrorist part was great with Fee going loony not getting her cigarette in her and there.
Overall it gets a B to B+ without the ending-related material it would get an A.
If you can upload the manga, that'd be great. =]

Same opinion here I was annoyed with the whole terrorist plot and how what's her name turn into a terrorist. From what I hear one of the producers is anti Iraq war and has political views on it. So he tends to Integrate it in the anime he works on. His also one of the producers of Code Geass...
I'm about to read the manga and from I've skim through it that plot from the anime isn't there.
Oh and the Ninja Episode I also thought it was rather ridiculous as well. Though it did seem fun to be able to do that sort of stuff because of less gravity.

Yeah I'd agree with you on those points, it was a good series, and I can understand why many people have it as one of their favourites but it just didn't do enough for me to consider it amazing. A solid B to B+ as you say.
I haven't read the manga but maybe I will some time.

I cant remember a time when I was so disappointed in an anime. Like I said above, I'm a big fan of the manga, and the fact that it was only 4 volumes made me foolishly believe the anime adaptation would have no filler at all!
The anime is absolute shit. It literally begins with filler, and is stuffed to the gills with it; with obnoxious filler characters with horrible voice actors, and obnoxious filler storylines with love squares. I still cant get over the fact that at one point there were ninja. FREAKIN' NINJA. I was so pissed off!!!
I had to stop watching at episode 12 because it was souring my memory of the manga. ¬_¬
