Dattebayo fansubber crosses line?!? (Reference to VTech massacre)

In the opening messages of, fansub group, Dattebayo's sub of the latest Bleach episode (#122), the following message appears....

"Statistically, there is a 33% chance DB will have one less download due to the Vtech massacre."

..... Many believe that this demonstrates what they feel is Dattebayo's misplaced indifference towards the users of it's fansubs. Others say that Dattebayo has crossed the line, plain and simple.

It is said that, upon recieving a flood of messages of outrage from those who have noticed the message, Dattebayo posted the following "press release" (which may or may not be another case of, what some consider, Dattebayo toying with the "EMOtions" of it's fansubs users), which outlines their regret over this event (regret is probably the wrong word), and some actions they have taken in response....

Dattebayo Fansubs, LLC learned that one of our employees, namely "timecop" was responsible for the recent "troll" message inserted into Bleach 122 release about the Virginia Tech Massacre.

"From the outset, I believe all of us have been deeply upset and revulsed by the statements that was made by "timecop" during the opening comments. It made it seem like all we care about is download counts", retired Dattebayo translator "Yukizora" said in a statement.

"There has been much discussion of the effect language like this has on our young people, particularly those watching Bleach and Naruto fansubs from us," the statement continued. "That consideration has weighed most heavily on our minds as we made our decision to terminate "timecop"'s employment immediately."

Remaining Dattebayo staff would like to offer sincere apology to anyone who was offended by the message, and would like to remind those who weren't that Internet is Serious Business.

Since, it has become apparent that a few NF posters didn't get the joke, I will post the following explanation. (This is not intended to insult anyone, on my part. Just to avoid misunderstanding):

timecop (the subber who's responsible for the message), is saying that there is a 33% chance that the Vtech Gunman was a part of the Dattebayo Fansubs viewer community or the anime fansubs viewer community, in general. At the same time, he implies that 1 in 3 members of this community are just as psychotic and immoral as the Vtech Gunman.

After these two posts, that I made, asking a DB rep to clear up a misunderstanding(otherwise, "drop the joke, already"), she responded, by "dropping the joke".

My 1st post to Moraine:The 33% was reached by dividing the campus population by the number of dls we get from VT. That is all.

I think what might be bothering most of those, who were offended, is the fact that they can't really be sure where the joke begins and ends in this. Especially, with those "press releases" of yours. When have they ever been "Serious Business"?

I for one, hold no ill will towards what I consider to be one of the better fansub groups out there, Dattebayo. I was simply reporting the news, in the thread I made on this topic.
I do, however, offer my condolences to any close family/friends of the Vtech victims, who happen to come across that message, while they are (for example) trying to get their mind of their current crisis by watching the latest Bleach fansub.

Moraine's(DB's rep) response:He's not fired. That apology was fake. And there are certain things you don't cross the line with. This was one of them.

As for the ban, it's a poor ban that timecop set up that catches on the word 'opening' b/c of the thing with the Naruto 006-007 op.While, I do appreciate it that you have decided to confirm my(and others) suspicions, that this is all part of Dattebayo's usual mischief; I will have to remind you that, in this world of karma, what goes around comes around. I, honestly, hope that if any of you are ever tortured with such a tragedy, you will be spared of the "dry, corny, type of humor" that you, yourselves, have demonstrated these past three days.
With that said, I eagerly await Dattebayo's next "cornball" "attention whoring" prank. :) Maybe, that one will actually succeed in getting under my skin, personally.
Perhaps, I would appreciate your pranks more, if one of them managed to really be funny or offend me personally. Instead, I find my self offering "condolences" to both, the people that find it funny(poor children), and those that get overly offended by your pranks or angry. It seems pretty clear to me that the message states that if any given 33 people in the U.S. die, there's a 33% chance of them losing a viewer-- meaning about 1/100 people in that agegroup watch their subs. That being said, it could easily be a made up figure.

But if 1/3 of the psycho's are DB-downloaders, then there is a 1/3 chance the he was one of them.
I don't want to defend DB, because the timimg and overall necessarity of the joke is very debatable. I just wanted to make clear what i believe is what they meant.

This is a sensible conslusion for you to reach. However, if you rethink it from a different angle, you will see that, even, this one is flawed. That is mostly because, either, the statement was meant to be "uncleared"(with possibly multiple meanings) or timecop(and DB) just failed at their "reference/prank"(and I'm sure that they don't care).

The explanation in the OP isn't derived from math alone. It takes into account, the past history of Dattebayo's pranks, which have ALWAYS included the ridiculing of portions of their sub-user community.

true, it wasn't a fact. it was a probability statement and nothing more (which still isn't offensive (to the people who believe it to be); all the statement is doing is saying how likely something, in this case the chance that they've lost a viewer because of the events at VT, is).

timecop (the subber who's responsible for the message), is saying that there is a 33% chance that the Vtech Gunman was a part of the Dattebayo Fansubs viewer community or the anime fansubs viewer community, in general. cardboard: I am an editor and timer. There are a couple other members who drift around as well, but we mainly stick to the Naruto and Bleach sections. As for making fun of our fans, I don't like being mean. There is a difference between good-natured jokes and trying to piss people off or cause problems for them.

I didn't say I had many problems. I disagreed with 3 things that have been done, with 2 being very recent. I'm not going to leave a group I helped build b/c of it, but I can still disagree with some of the stuff that happens.What you did, in just one post, was name four things that had been done, that you DO NOT support. Then, you named one additional thing (count 5?) that you "like" to do differently from what is DB policy. Again, I DO NOT remember using the word liar, to describe you. This leaves me to believe that you have taken offense to the fact that I do not take your posts, or anything that DB says, seriously.

Your repeated posts towards me can only be viewed as an appeal to my sensibilities to start thinking of you as a seperate individual from the offending element of DB, and therefore, take your posts as serious business.

Out of courtesy, I decided to inform you that the easiest way to accomplish this, was through use of the PM system. Whether you desired to use it or not, is of no concern to me.
When two posters find themselves at odds and slightly off topic, and both would like to resolve the matter(genuinely); the easiest way for both individuals to be certain of the sincerity of each other's statements, would be through the PM system, where one would be more motivated to believe that the other's statements are not ingenuine, and not a front put on for other posters. This is a cornerstone fucntion of the PM system, and I don't see it not being worthy enough of a means to suit your needs. On the contrary, at this point, you appear to be the one that is unworthy of that means of resolution. I'll inform you now, that a PM from you to me would now be a waste of your time.

On that note, it should now be apparent to you that none of your posts, or anything that DB says or do, will ever be guaranteed to be taken as "serious business" by me. Otherwise, save your breath.

If you were truly trying to find the truth, then at least, to a certain extent, you would have to admit to the possibility that Moraine was telling the truth.
