I have a feeling that Jiraiya is actually stronger than Itachi as well. Maybe it is why Itachi and Kisame did flee when Jiraiya turned up, because they didn't want a hard fight. But it may also be that they fled because their sole purpose was only to capture Naruto, and nothing else. And so if they did engage fighting with Jiraiya, it would complicate things.

If Itachi was doing this... He would be assuming that Sasuke hasn't caused any irreversible damage to his own eyes...

But how would he know that if he isn't even in contact with Sasuke anymore...?

That's the flaw behind the theory. Itachi is assuming the best-case scenario... For all he knows, Sasuke could have damaged his eyes even further than Itachi trying to gain the eyes and perfect the jutsu himself.

But I still thought it was a decent theory.

Maybe Sasuke isn't wanting to gain Mangekyou Sharingan, but then I guess that would go against his desire in wanting to become stronger.

@Gokou: I've read how Kakashi probably got Mangekyou Sharingan by training hard, though I kind of doubt that. Well.....That's easy to answer I have to say. Sasuke never really had the attention he wanted from Fugaku or Itachi, right? So the only person he could talk to was Mikoto. Itachi killed Mikoto and Fugaku. Itachi killed the only person Sasuke could return to if he had a problem. Even if Fugaku never gave Sasuke the attention he wanted, it still was his father.

Really? 3/4 years ago the mother from my grandpa died, I didn't really felt anything when she did. Yes, I felt sorry for my grandpa's father and of course my grandpa himself. But not really a sad feeling for his mother.

Itachi is 20 now and he already knows more then a Hokage does. Let's put it this way. Itachi already knew alot on the age of 13, after he joined the Akatsuki he keeps on learning more and more. He now already knows alot, and he is still learning, which makes him stronger. Sasuke is 16 now, he only learned on missions, on C class missions like finding a pet. Or the fight with Zabuza. But since Sasuke isn't Itachi, or joined the Akatsuki he will never become better then Itachi. And no, you don't have to come with "but he's being teached by Orochimaru" Orochimaru only knows alot about poison and all. Thats what he can teach Sasuke, but fighting like Itachi he will never do.

I actually see him saying, "That's what is expected of being a Uchiha", since Sasuke was able to become strong enough to defeat Itachi. I mean, Sasuke did really wanted to hear those words from his father, and because he's dead, the next best person would have to be Itachi, even though Sasuke just defeated him.

I don't think he'll ever become truly good, but I think that right before he dies he might admit that he does love Sasuke, or express some sort of remorse for what he did. So he won't really be good, but he might show that he has some emotion or compassion for his brother. I don't think that will happen until the very end though, with his last breath.

While I also don't see him asking for forgiveness, I still think there's too big of a mystery to Itachi to completely know how he'd go about some things. Yeah, he's a villan, but he's different. He's more polite, more calculated, more willing to avoid altercations and we did see him as a caring brother. We've never gotten that with people like oh say Orochimaru who's evil to the core.

Itachi is 20 now and he already knows more then a Hokage does. Let's put it this way. Itachi already knew alot on the age of 13, after he joined the Akatsuki he keeps on learning more and more. He now already knows alot, and he is still learning, which makes him stronger. Sasuke is 16 now, he only learned on missions, on C class missions like finding a pet. Or the fight with Zabuza. But since Sasuke isn't Itachi, or joined the Akatsuki he will never become better then Itachi. And no, you don't have to come with "but he's being teached by Orochimaru" Orochimaru only knows alot about poison and all. Thats what he can teach Sasuke, but fighting like Itachi he will never do.

I guess you like Itachi more than I do, lol. I don't have over 300 pictures, and none limited edition, but I printed a bunch and taped them to posterboard and made a collage of him and put it on my wall!
And I own an Itachi necklace/dog tag and wear it constantly.
And I was gonna be him for the anime convention I'm going to, but decided to be Hinata instead. ^^; And I'll celebrate his birthday too! Somehow. And I haven't watched the episodes with him in them a million times, but they're some of my favorites. And if Sasuke kills Itachi, I'll be very very angry and depressed for a few days maybe, but not delete the series and die because there are other things I like too!
