Shounen and flashbacks

What is your opinion on flash backs in shounen manga?

I myself am prtty tired of dragged out flash backs and bad childhood memories. Seems like those shounen mangakas are not able to create something their own instead of copying someone elses recipe.

Yep, from the anime point of view, I think it depends very much on the flash back, I can think of some very good ones. Althrough none of the ones that jump to mind come from naruto or bleach, I have not watched one peace through.

A fue that jump to mind but in no real order; Shuffle, Tokko, Kanon, Fukakoi Alt, Elfin Lied, Ai Yori Aoshi, Blood+, Kekkaishi, Rozen Maiden (The OVA is a good example from this series), Strawberry Panic.

I think some times flash backs can help to answer questions, and provoke emotions that can help to inferlance the story view point in the mind of the viewer. To great effect in some cases.

Flashbacks are nice to show character motivation or background or just to see how they were like when they are young, it is also useful when flashbacks are shown during a fight which usually means a loss or death is approaching

They are well and truly over-used and instead of the good reason to use them they are often used to "fillerize" aka drag out the running time of the anime because it's easy re-using old scenes than coming up with new ones and slows the story down too much.

In general the use of flashbacks (usually excessive these days) just means lazy writing. If you see the same flashback used more than once in the series thats basically what I'm talking about and it happens alot in alot of current Shounen stuff I watch.

There are two kinds of flashbacks.

The ones that just retell things that happened (were animated) already (and are therefore filler, basically), and the ones that tell something completely new (because not EVERYTHING important just happened in the time from where the story started. Many things happened years ago and must be told to understand the story)

I think I only realy remmeber flashbacks that add to a story, and forget flash backs that are just fillers and enjory the story hehe.

Flashbacks aren't bad if, like what everyone else is saying, it give motivation and development for the character having it. My only gripe with it is that they usaully show up in the middle of a fight, and makes the fight drag so by the time they start fighting again, the rush you felt before the flashback is gone. Plus I often wonder why the other guy doesn't just attack while the opponent is flipping off his mouth.

I personally would rather have them put the flashback at the end of the fight. It would make more sense for the opponent to tell the fighter about himself while he's laying there helpless and beaten.

hell Flashbacks are the sole reason we were introduced to Dr. Hiluluk and Tom aokay in my book, although except when shown last minute of a fight right before the hero pulls a win from nowhere.

flashbacks are good... unless its a monthly manga... and if it went on alot of volumes...
