In the Wave Country arc, Sasuke was nearly driven to commit suicide by the mere presence of a jounin, Momochi Zabuza. When Orochimaru sparred with Naruto and Sasuke he was plainly playing around — he did not have to be caught in Sasuke's fire attack, and he was hiding his full presence. If he had gone all out against the Rookie "Twelve", only Naruto would have been able to even try to attack him, and he would have been killed in one attack.
