It'd be extremely hard for Shino to stick his bugs on Gaara. Being subtle may work, but the sand is quite reactive in terms of defense.

Gaara has quite an advantage, in terms of defense and offense with his sand.

Though one can argue that the bugs can potentially drain the chakra from the sand and render it ineffective, it's purely theoretical.

Interesting match-up. And it would be tough to decide a winner, because their fighting styles are so similar. Just one fights with sand and one fights with bugs.

But if I remember correctly, Gaara uses chakra to control that sand, and Shino's bugs eat chakra, so Shino could just drain him of his chakra. However, Gaara could just go Shukaku once that happens and crush Shino.

Again, Gaara is in another league than those three Genin from the sound village, they were just cannon fodder that Orochimaru sent out for his own amusement. Also Dosu was stronger than Zaku and Gaara dispatched Dosu without batting an eye while Shino did have to do a little work to take out Zaku...who if you will remember was already beat the heck up by Sasuke.

If everyone says Gaara could beat Shino before he went Shukaku then why are some people saying Shino couldn't beat Shukaku. If Gaara stayed regular, Shino would just follow up his sand with his bugs and swarm Gaara, all the while meleeing him to death. If Gaara went Shukaku, yes, he would win but only cuz its an unfair match-up with that.

Hmm... I don't know. If Shino could plant a bug on him I think he would win. The sand doesn't defend against everything. Shino's bugs don't necessarily 'attack' people in a way that I think would cause Gaara's sand defense to activate. But too much depends on Shino planting the bug so I'd have to say that Gaara has 90% chance of winning.
