Naruto Vs. DBZ (Possible Spoilers)

I'm going to use references to the manga in this topic. I would have put it in Konoha Library but I don't know if it goes there, so move it if you have to. I'm not going to spoiler every sentence, so be forewarned.




Now, for a long time now DBZ has been known as the most popular anime of all time. I have no problem agreeing with that. But is it the best anime of all time? I doubt it. I was a total DBtard a few years ago.

The show would have been perfect had it not been for the constant talking, annoying characters, etc. But I put up with it.

When I first saw Naruto, I was interested by its underdog appearance. Unlike the cliche style of "OMFG MAIN CHARACTER PWNZ U" it had the center character Naruto, who was weak, pathetic, and underestimated. He showed his true strength when he was backed into a corner, and proved to everyone -and himself- that he could keep up.

In DBZ, Goku has ALWAYS been exceptional, talented, and above the rest. Even when he was a child. That's like having Itachi be the main character. It's annoying.

He beats the bad guy with his overused special SPIRIT BOMB every time. And when someone else gets a chance, (Gohan gets ONE saga, and then he sucks) it never lasts. All of the sagas, Goku was directly or indirectly involved in beating the bad guy for good. And he never stays dead. If you're going to die, stay that way you happy-go-lucky douchebag.


So anyways, I've seen people get mad because Naruto SUPPOSEDLY copies from DBZ. In some way, shape, or form, every anime has taken a few good points from another. DBZ isn't completely original. Akira took his basic storyline from a Chinese movie "Journey to the West". He just built off of that.

No one has ever done what Naruto did. Ninjas? Seems corny at first, but much more than what you think.

On another note, users are getting angry about Sasuke's power over Naruto. It adds to the plot. Or would you prefer Naruto going Teh Kyuubi every fight and completely assraping the bad guy? That's really exciting isn't it?

No. It isn't.

Kishi does it to make the show more interesting, and learn from DBZ's mistakes. I commend him as an anime writer, he is truely talented.




So what anime do you think is better? Naruto or Dragonball Z?

I voted DBZ, but I like naruto very much aswell:).I liked almost everything about DBZ even the "annoying characters"and "lots of talking". The only thing I didnt like was the gohan-getting-nerdy thing. As for Naruto, I really like sasuke's character:amuse , as much as I like the DBZ things. I don't know how the naruto story line will go and how it will end, so I'm playin save and thats why I voted DBZ

What you write here is very interesting. It is true, it does repeat itself a little too much but that was because the creator wanted to finish at the Freiza arc, but they people who were making the money off that franchise; didn't want it to stop. -.-

Okay, I used to be a pretty heavy DBZ fan myself, but i'd have to say that Naruto completely pwns it in terms of storyline, character design, all that jazz. In DBZ nowadays, all they do is scream for a couple episodes looking like they're constipated, and then they shoot a ball at themselves, till one dies. I mean the storyline in some of the DBZ sagas are intruiging, but not enough to beat anything of Naruto.

but both Goku and Naruto has power in kind of similar ways, for exampe: Goku is a Sayian and his father was almoost the strongest Sayian and i thinkk he would have become a Super Sayian if he didnt die, also he was trained by Kame-Sennin and also a but by his Granpa Gohan. then we have Naruto that is obvious i mean comon, Kyuubi = His sorce of power. And dont forget he was trained by Copy Ninja Hatake Kakashi(Strongest Jounin in Konoha) and then by possibly the strongest of the sannins.. Jiraya Aka Ero-Sennin(i think he is the strongest seince Orochimaru says himself that Itachi pwns him, and then when Itachi and Kisame meets Jiraya Itachi says ''We should leave.. even if we two take on Jiraya Possibly the strongest sannin(i think he says that)we dont have a big chance to survive against him.''

PS: About Goku: dont forget that Sayian's gets stronger everytime they survive when they are close to death.

The depth of characterisation in Naruto surpasses DBZ by FAR.

Also, in Naruto, women aren't helpless or simply there to provide the males with a son/daughter (Bulma, Chi Chi) - in some cases, they're actually badass. See Temari for an example.

Well I like them the same, Naruto has more of a on going plot and good character development, and some really cool fights. But DBZ I find is just more fun to watch.

DragonBall is just plain stupid. I've always hated it and I always will. It's all action with very little, if any, adventure. Also, nothing ever bad happens to the good guys. I think Naruto is on a whole different level. Aside from being jam-packed with adventure and strategy, things don't always end up the way they should. Plus, the character development is out of this world!

Dragonball manga was godly until the end of Freeza saga. It was above average during the Cell Saga and only started to look repetitive during the Buu saga. I still count DB as a great achievement greater than Naruto, Bleach and One Piece.

And don't try to bring in the whole "they stare at each other/powerup for 10 straight episodes" because that's anime only. Bringing that up as an argument is like saying Naruto sucks because of the 2 year long fillers.

Used to think DB and DBZ was teh shiz, but after getting into Naruto it doesn't seem so great anymore. Naruto has an ongoing plot running through, but DBZ towards the end especially kinda felt like it was repetitive: one badass villain appears from nowhere, gets beaten, another one turns up, etc etc.

Plus the whole ninja genjutsu/taijutsu/ninjutsu allows for way more interesting fights, with tactics and intelligence influencing stuff as much as pure power. In DBZ it was always like ''HA i go SSj3, now i pwn all you noobz!!''. Also greater diversity of characters in Naruto, in DBZ towards the end they kind of ignored the background characters like Krillin/ Yamcha etc because the Saiyans became ridiculously powerful.

Having said that, DBZ was great, i'm not bashing it in anyway, just Naruto has taken over and improved.

I would rather not watch four episodes of Goku charging up his spirit bomb then wtfbbqsaucepwning villian. Or they could do the classic wtf SUPERSAYING 12! Rinse Wash and Repeat. The characters are weak the plot is tiring and boring to watch later on in the series, the only thing it had going for it was the battle scenes which were very spaced out and also the second you think the episode will be a fight scene they spend 3 more talking...

I love Dragonball, and there's no doubting it was more influential and relative to other series at the time better than any current Jump series... however, really, I think all of the Big Three are better than Dragonball if you look at it objectively. They've taken influence from DB and basically improved upon it. Better characters, better plots, better fights (in Naruto's case) and better humour (in One Piece's case).

I might make a more detailed response a bit later, there's more I want to say but it's a bit too late.

Indeed - DBZ Is great, and is influencial(SP ;/?) to hundreds of other anime programs - naruto as one of them, and although i wasnt aware the original designers wanted to stop after the Freiza saga(which in my opinion was the best bit) i still think naruto is better.

Naruto has:
- Much more indepth story.
- Much better designed characters.
- a better and cleaner style (In my opinion)
and simply more imaginative in my opinion.

DB was pretty good until it shifted into DBZ. Considering when DB originally came out, it's still pretty good in my book, though Naruto has fixed up a few faults I have with the series.

DB is still a classic though.

Its in a Naruto forums so obviously Naruto wins, go to another anime forums and it'll be more intense.

I think DBZ deserves to win for its pioneering influence for the following 'shonen' industry (Owned by Bandai, Shushisha) Shonen has been very good for the Japanese economy!! From spawning toys, games, cards to DVD's!

Nuff said but I do perfer Naruto's story structure, although in my opinion its more fair to compare Bleach to DBZ or Naruto to FMA/One Piece.

I've been comparing these two series for weeks now, I even made a thread about it haha. I would like to say Naruto because it is my current fav shonen series, but DBZ is one of those epic shows that we all watched, it was one of the keystone animes that got me deeper into the genre of animation. DBZ was the reason I started getting into subbed anime (I had to watch "into the future" as a kid, to tell all the guys at school lol). I'm going to say DBZ FTW here because it's such a trademark series, like Akira is a trademark anime film.
