I've been interested in this manga ever since I saw the main character on the home page at http://jump.shueisha.co.jp/home.html. On the Gintama page, it looked really interesting, mixing Edo-period Japan with the future (ex: flying cars). The problem was that I read the title as Kintama because I couldn't see the two dashes that turn the K to a G. So I searched on Anime News Network for information on it and then looked for some scanslations.... no luck. Just today I realized that the title is Gintama and not Kintama so I immediately found some scans of it and read the first two chapters. So far I quite like it. Sakata Gintoko has a very cool design.

Anyone else read Gintama here? Does the story get good?

No, it's not really anything like Cowboy Bebop. Gintama has never really gotten real serious throughout the 9 chapters that I read. It's a comedy manga, basically. It's worth reading just for Sakata Gintoko and the Shinsengumi. ^_^

Gintama is so frekaing hilarious. XDDDD;;; I love the first chapter, "If sorry was enough, then the world wouldn't need sepukku" XD or something like that. XD The Shinsengumi is also funny. God this manga cracked me up. a must read. XD

Your friend is right... in a sense... sorta... not really. Well, there are a couple things wrong with your friend's statement:

1. Gin means silver, Kin means gold... the word Kintama (lit. golden ball) is used for testicles in Japanese
2. that's the wrong tama, 玉 means ball, sphere, etc... but　魂 means soul
3. Gintama means Silver Soul (in this case)

金玉kintama
銀魂gintama

If you look closely, the kanji for gold is actually part of the kanji for silver... just scrunched up a bit.

Yeah, it's not the best manga, but it is something a bit different from what I normally read, too. I usually get annoyed by manga that are centered around comedy... Gintama just has a certain appeal that I can't quite explain.

I feel like reviving this thread now that Gintama will have an anime in two months. The only thing is, you can't really find the manga anywhere anymore.

....must find...manga...scans...I've watched the first 3 episodes on youtube since that's all they have submitted subbed so far. I know Viz has the license for the manga, but I don't know when they plan on releasing it. It seems to have a small cult following, but nothing mainstream, so perhaps they're holding off on it. Still if anyone knows where I can find some scannalations for free that would be awesome. ^^
