I like Deidara too. His clay techniques are really cool, and like ByakuHime said, he's a good strategist. I think the arm that got crushed by Gaara will be healed by some medical nin in Akatsuki (they've got to have one, right?) and the one that was blown off will be reattached/replaced with clay or something like that.
BTW, does Deidara have mouths on both hands or just one?

That wasn't him with his life on the line, he was being cautious since his enemy was Kakashi (completely ignored Naruto's presence) and you mentioned that he blew "himself" up to get them away, it was just a show for him. You could be right by saying his life was on the line after the other party interfered.

I have hope in Kishimoto, I dont think he would just bring any character from his ass to play the role of the Akatsuki leader. And about taking turns, dont think so. The leader would have to be someone pretty uber strong to boss around people such as Itachi and etc..

Zetsu recommended Tobi as for someone to take the place of the deceased Sasori, he also mentioned that to enter the Akatsuki organization would be hard for anyone. So i think we can say without any doubt that Tobi is strong. :)
