What could defeat the shopkeeper from Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening?

In "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening," the shopkeeper could freeze Link to the spot that he's standing ion and instantly kill Link (no matter what point he was in the game) if Link stole something from the shop and came back in at any point. Now, assuming that whoever is chosen has just stole something from the shop and had come back in to steal more, would they be able to defeat the shopkeeper?

Never did understand why they added that bit to the game, to convince kids not to steal because shop keepers will hunt you down and zap you?
