Seeing how the MD project #1 is taking a looooong time, partially due to me being lazy and busy at the same time in my real life and to the nigh unto impossible task of making a "pimp canon", I figured we might want to do a holiday special which will both serve to give a few music pimps the credit they truly deserve and maybe even rekindle the interest in pimps from the days of yore.

Here's how I got the general idea:

After finally beating my iPod into submission and figuring out how to manage the damn content, I've a pretty decent library of old pimps on it. Yesterday, walking drunk home from a nice night out with friends, I listened to a song I got from a pimp a long time ago. This song is one of those songs I always return to, and as I reflected upon why, I realized that I had a number of songs pimped over my time here that I've developed quite a strong emotional attachement to, no matter how much I liked the album as a whole or how much I know about the artist. These are tracks that I love dearly, some of which have an almost therapeutic effect on me, and they were all given to me for free by you guys. I refuse to believe I'm the only one in this situation, and it's about time these few gems got their due praise.

The actual general idea:

You make a playlist, entirely made up of songs you've gotten off of NF, where each and every song means a lot to you personally. Then you up it and pimp it, and make a post in this here thread where you write as extensively as you can muster on your own, personal and über-subjective relationship with each song, as well as who pimped it and when. No wrong answers, just your personal experience with each track, which is all that counts, really.

Two rules, however:
1. Only one song per pimp and maximum two songs from the same band on your list. The reason for this is simply that if people wants to listen to your stuff, some diversity is nice. Also, it makes each song more special when people know that this particular song is the one that is the most special to you out of a pimp everyone knows you love.
2. Be utterly and completely honest. Which means, this is not a popularity contest nor an attampt at stroking every ego. Don't include tracks you like but don't love because you want a specific pimper to feel good or whatever. As long as everyone gets their introspecive on and answer as candidly as they can, with no undeserved entires, each entry will weigh that much more. If that means your list is only three tracks long, if that even, no problem. Give thanks to the ones who deserve it, don't stroke egos that doesn't. It's much easier to motivate yourself to listen to a three-track playlist than 15-track one anyway.

What this will possibly acheive:

A lot of the music pimpers here sometimes feel that their efforts are meaningless, and this thread is meant to disprove that notion. Sometimes, people make an inprint on your life without realizing it themselves and this thread is meant to give that guy/girl who pimped that song you've been spinning and loving for nine months that fuzzy feeling inside. It's christmas, and seeing how we all love each other so embarrasingly much, I say this is about as good a time to tell each other as times get.

Secondly, some newer members might see songs here from pimps they've never heard of, get curious, listen, and ask for a re-up. Lots of godly shit has been pimped before the time of the majority of the current regs, and sometimes a little bite is all you need to get hooked.

Yay? Nay? Thoughts? Questions?

*only downloads half the pimps and only has time to listen to them about a month after download*

bubbles = fail

others may not be as crap as me though and this sounds like a good idea

I think it's a great Idea, but my list would be rather small, according to the rules, as I haven't been on NF for that long, and as such haven't been able to accumulate that many pimps, from different bands.

But I think it would be an amazing way to bring old pimps without overloading those involved. If people participated, I think it would add alot to peoples band names, (Especially mine) and overall musical content. I think there are some amazing bands that have been pimped before many people came here, so the re-pimps could allow those newer members to see those pimped in the past, without doing the whole pimp again.

All in all, great idea.

hmm i'd be in a similar boat to bubbles, except with even less pimps downloaded.

I could probably put something together from tracks I've particularly enjoyed and say why, but I think I'd struggle to say that more than one or two mean a lot to me (as well as to remember who pimped it)

I think its a good idea though

I have enough pimps for this! It's a good idea but not everyone downloads so many pimps and you know maybe Dave will rename Katrina And The Waves mp3s and add them to his list as some canadian band Cata pimped and then everyone will get angry at Dave and he'll probably hang himself and how will you feel then huh less

How will you feel with that blood all over your hands huh less

HOW WILL YOU FEEL

After much delibertaion from Del and the Lirious Squad. This thread is now..

And my sister can be said to be an important person. :nod

I think we should have a list of everything that has been pimped. Sometimes I run into albums forgetting that it's been pimped to me.

Also.. if I already owned an album but was pimped before my time.. can I add that to my list? Like.. I already had K'naan, Common, Portishead.. and a few others.

you know where to go for the common del, and i got some pimps, but all my 'old' stuff (all my mali, and jazz, and rock) is in my laptop, which took a crap on me about 2 months ago. so mainly all i got is alot of hip hop, but i have enough to say i have old stuff! i already have a mental list in my head, and i think this could be a good idea for some members who "specialize" in a specific genre to showcase some of their songs, since two people who like the same genre, may have two completly different tastes in it.

Doh! I don't have hardly any pimps from a long time ago and I don't remember who pimped them. I will make a playlist, however.

1. Talk Talk - Ascension Day
Best moe-pimp ever! The entire album is amazing but this one is just to beautiful to comprehend.

2. dredg - Hangover On a Tuesday
Don't remember when or who first pimped Catch Without arms but it became my favourite band after this, so THANK YOU <3. This is my absolute favourite of dredg since it holds both the energy and the moody feeling that makes dredg my favourite band. You can feel how much they enjoy playing and I just love listening to it. This is the way I want to live.

3. The Mars Volta - Take The Veil Cerpin Taxt .. One of the very early pimps I received. Again I don't recall the pimp but this lingers in my mind and I now would say it's one of my favourite bands. This song holds the coolest riff ever with a noise explosion that blow my brains out, only conquered by Tomahawk's Aktion F1-413.

4. Porcupine Tree - The Sound of Muzak
Catapimp. Brainsex. It makes me think about the world, music and everything. Stupid Dream made me love this band but The Sound of Muzak define them.

5. LuciDream - I Wander
Catapimp, need I say more. My absolute fav of this band. The lyrics are so outstanding and witty it's a miracle this doesn't list the charts over the world.

6. CunninLynguists - The South
When Hip-hop goes amazing. Courtesy of JK! World class beat and the panflute makes me wish I was born in South America.

7. Ween - What Deaner Was Talking About
Catapimp. Ween is totally mindblowing but this track is just a beautiful short pop song from the album that defined Ween for me. I dig it greatly.

8. Devin Townsend - Deep Peace
CATAPIMP <3 Best solo ever. Dreamy and inspiring. To me, this is the most outstanding performance in production ever acheived by mankind.

9. Estradasphere - The Dapper Bandits
First given to me by the wonderful Cloon, this track is one of Estradasphere's greatest compositions and maybe the best song falling under the "jazz" genre and "metal" genre at the same time. This is what I want music to be.

10. Modest Mouse - Teeth Like God' s Shoeshine .. When it first was pimped, a very long time ago, I hated it. Then it came back some time this year (By lesserhumyn, I believe), and now I think they are absolutely amazing. The track that finally redefined them for me, representing both the beautiful and the aggresive dissonant side of MM.

These are ones that first struck me, however, there are alot of songs I'd love to add in. Like half of Ween's discography, The entire K'naan album. Waste and Tragedy by the smalls. I could go on. Most of the greatest are all Catapimps.

I will put some thought into it.

A couple, like matisyahu, Q-Tip and Corey Smith are easy, some...take much more work.
