I absolutely love Mars Volta - their comatorium album was immense. i havent listened to that mush music but they are by far the most surreal; and they utilise undoubtedly the widest vocabulary of all the lyrics ive listened to. the tone of the singing for me also completes their songs for me.

anyone know of any other good prog rock bands that they can upload? thanks a lot

i got a link to De-Loused in the Comatorium if you like (PM)

Yes
Styx
Genesis
Jethro Tull
Tool
Rush
Dream Theater
Emerson, Lake and Palmer

Frances was a bit of a let-down to me, to be honest.

TMV has other stuff out, too. Like A Missing Chromosome.

I was listening to De-Loused again a few nights ago. I wanted to see if my opinion changed of Mars.. No go. The album was more listenable though. I guess it's a step in the right direction. But I'm not there exactly there yet ot where the hype is.

No matter how much people says, the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear "Progressive" (rock or metal or anything that progresses) is, indeed, Watchtower. It was a pity that making music beyond their era was the reason of their oblivion. Though, when they had been on the stage as Dream Theater's pre-band (umm, don't know the english term for this, sorry) in many concerts and tours, people getting attracted to them more than DT itself is easily a testament for how great they are.

And, it's the only group that can both physically and mentally tire me. That's quite a much.

Curved Air, renaissance, yes, genesis, van der graaf generator, gentle giant, soft machine, would be others I'd name. Especially gentle giant... it's just... graceful!

Oh. I need to get out of here and find somewhere to sleep at this night. I can't spend night here. Gotta go. Maybe I'll say some more stuff once I become able to write again. You guys try those groups. They're godly.

Boskov, I like your taste in prog. \m/

Adding and re-emphasizing, Tool, Shpongle, Sigh, Arcturus, Devin Townsend Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, ...so many good fucking progressive bands (though I am thinking in terms of progressive as opposed to just prog... >.> especially in a few select cases.)

I loves teh prog.

yeah, prog rock doesn't do justice to what many of the bands play.
several of the bands the good dr. mentioned are post-rock bands.
oh, and the mars volta hate being called prog rock, because, let's face it, they have more in common with many other genres than they do with rock.

You know what sold me on them the first time? Televators. Cedric's voice is awesome in it.

"The house half the way
Fell empty with teeth that
Split both his lips
Mark these words
One day this chalk outline will circle this city
Was he robbed of the asphalt that cushioned his face?
A room colored charlatan hid in a safe
Stalk the ground
Stalk the ground"

Awesome. Cicatriz ESP also blows me away.

On a separate note, a more mainstream option would be Coheed & Cambria.

But yeah, I cannot think prog or progressive without those two names.

I actually wanna see Devy work with:

Mike Patton
Les Claypool
Steve Wilson
Mikael Akerfeldt
Peter Tagtgren
Ani DiFranco
Tchort
Nevermore (as producer)

seeing as he already filled my dream of working with Gwar.

All of those above would also technically qualify as 'Progressive' (though not prog in most cases)

Yeah, I would think so. However, I think a dash of Mr. Ajren Lucassen would add quite bit to that godly mix.

Yeah, we'll leave that to the others, but I was thinking more along the lines of orchestrating the whole speal. Whether you like him or not, you have to admit he's got a gift for creating some amazing music, dispite some very cheezy lyrics. (THE Wasn't that cheesy, though.)

but he has a fascinating talent for mixing styles and making masterpieces.

but his lyrics are usually pretty cheesy.

I overlook the lyrical cheese factor because of the fact that his music is amazing. THE was a masterpiece, by any standard, and one of my favorite albums.

If I start listing all the prog bands I like, it'd take forever. And it's really hard because prog as a genre is hard to define. So I'll just go with my top 3 favorite bands, Porcupine Tree, Opeth and Tool. Porcupine Tree isn't really prog but it's the most fitting genre for them so I'll go with the flow and lump them there.

I think there are two types of prog nowadays, Traditional Prog, IE King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator, Yes, Genesis etc, and there is the "Ideal" of progressive music, which I think PT fits in perfectly. Hooray for Prog! :D

Newer prog: Dredg, Porcupine Tree, The Mars Volta
Old prog: Yes, King Crimson, Jethro Tull

Others are good, but those bands make godly music.
