help...i'm making an avatar

here's my extremely noobish question :smile-big
how do i make an avatar that's kinda cut up? like the one below... i've tried cutting it up but i can't for the life of me get a border around it... thanks in advance :)

It is called called a template. Mostly use for photoshop.

hehehe...funny coz i made my avatar myself. but that's exactly what i did... i made shape first then just put your pic on another layer and erase away... :D
