There's actually two systems of Chinese characters...

There's the simplified, and the traditional.

Mainland Chinese usually use simplified. Taiwanese, and I think Hong Kong still use traditional. And also interestingly enough, Japanese kanji is also typically traditional Chinese characters (although they often have different meanings).

As an illustration of how the two are different, take the character for talk:

说 is the Chinese simplified version.

說 is the Chinese traditional version.

Other examples of differences:

ai - love

爱 - simplified
愛 - traditional

feng - wind

风 - simplified
風 - traditional

They're not always different.

For example:

金 - is the character for 'gold'
金 - see it's the same ^_^

I've been learning the traditional way for 8 years. However, the moment I came to mainland China, I managed to switch to simplified Chinese in less than 2 months.

Call me genius. ^^

Lynxe-san is a genius.

KaKashi-san, if you have Windows XP there's an easy way to install the Asian Language system.

Right now I can type in Chinese, both simplified and traditional, Japanese, and Spanish.

:grin

Just go into the Control Panel and go to Date, Time, Language and Regional Options. Then there should be a 'add other languages' option. Click that, and then check the box that says 'install files for East Asian languages'.

After that's done, click the button that says 'Details...'

Then click Add and after that it should just be self-explanatory.

You can install the keyboard input for any language. Well, any that's available that is. Most of the common languages are available though. Like Spanish, French, German, Italian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese... for goodness sakes they even have Mongolian.

For Chinese though, personally I've installed the Chinese (Taiwan) for traditional characters, and Chinese (PRC) for simplified.

There are also several input methods for Chinese. The easiest one for westerners though, I'd say, would probably be pinyin.

PRC version uses this automatically, but the Taiwanese version doesn't. For the Taiwanese version you have to go to the language bar (which is usually somewhere on the top of your screen, and if not there, it's on the bottom somewhere along the line where the taskbar is).

If you see that, you'll realize, oh gee I have the option to switch to another language? Kind of how I stumbled onto this thing. And yeah, you do.

If you installed the Chinese language files, and you click where it says EN English (United States), you should get a drop-down menu that lists all the languages you have available to use (the ones you've added through the 'add other languages' option). Then if you click the Chinese (Taiwan), and go to Tools and then Properties, and then click the tab that says Keyboard Mapping, there should be an option there that says Hanyu Pinyin.

Click the little circle next to it, and you're good to go.

Any questions just ask me okay? ^_^

You guys live in china too?

ni men dou zhu zai zhong guo ma?

Ni is you, and when a men comes after ni or wo it means it is plural. So...

Wo xi huan ni

(I like you)

Wo men xi huan ni

(We like you)

Dou is a bit like 'too' I guess. I am not too sure on this one, but if you want to say me too you can say "wo dou shi" or "wo ye shi" but I am not completely sure.

Zhu zai... Zhu is live and zai is in.

Zhong Guo is China. Middle Land/Country.

Ma is like a word that goes with a question.

So, I've been PM-ed and I'm the teacher for today. WOWZIES.

Starting off, not to be conceited, but I have to tell you about myself, because technically, you don't want a stranger as a teacher.
I'm Laura, and my old username was Lynxe but now I'm Sakura. I live in China, and I'm taking Chinese as a full-course. I'm 100% Chinese and I know the easy way to certain things, and the RIGHT way. You can't just directly translate things from English. You have to learn it bit-by-bit.

You needa know pinyin [how to pronounce the words using a system of letters and sounds], and of course, the tones.
I will show you the tones using 1, 2, 3, and 4. So when I write pinyin, it would be like "shen3" for example.

Things to keep in mind:
你好 - hello [ni2 hao3]
你好吗? - how are you/are you good [ni2 hao3 ma1]
我叫______ - I'm called or My name is [simple] [wo3 jiao4]
我的名字是________ - My name is [formal] [wo3 de ming2 zi4 shi4]
我是______人 - I'm _______ [For example. 我是美国人 would mean "I'm American"] [wo3 shi4 ____ ren2]

So now, I'll teach the nationalities real fast.
美国 - USA [mei3 guo2]
中国 - China [zhong1 guo2]
日本 - Japan [ri4 ben3]
澳大利亚 - Australia [ao4 da4 li4 ya4]
加拿大 - Canada [jia1 na2 da4]
韩国 - Korea [mostly South Korea] [han2 guo2]
德国 - Germany [de2 guo2]
法国 - France [fa3 guo2]

My fingers are getting. That's all for now. PM me if you have questions.

-KaKashi-
11-28-2006, 07:23 AM
hmm im still kinda confused how to say them lol the numbers are confusing me or are they suppose to be the characters sakura ?

Sakura
11-28-2006, 08:29 AM
It is hard to explain. And I can only do that by letting you listen to the tones. There are 4 tones in the Chinese language, and online, they are represented with numbers.

Try finding a site where you can listen to how the tones sound like.
When I write "gao1" for example, you read "gao" first, then you see the "1" which is the tone, and then add it to the word.

-KaKashi-
11-28-2006, 08:43 AM
Ooooooo i see now lol :amuse hmm i dont think i can find the site for the tones ~_~ uhm would i tbe any different with the numbers off?

Sakura
11-29-2006, 06:15 AM
Then, it would be monotonous. And that wouldn't classify as Chinese.
Chinese is all about the tones. =D

11-30-2006, 04:49 AM
I'm bored. So here's a quickie.

Chinese. As Lynxe explained, it has 汉语拼音, han4 yu2 pin4 yin1, which is technically symbols and words for accurate punctuation and whatnot.

Here is.. a chart-graph thingie.
The first tone is a high, level pitch. Example: 踢 tī = kick
The second tone starts high and continues to rise. Example: 提 tí = lift
The third tone falls first, then rises. Example:体 tǐ = body
The fourth tone starts high and falls. Example: 替 tì = replace

The last tone looks like this. http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/7942/nuom8.png
[ 女 ] : Girl; female.
It is a symbol aimed to avoid confusion. I will explain this later, after I find a website that can pronounce it.

For more examples, go to http://www.minmm.com/minc/classes.php and click on any of the lessons in Chinese Beginner II.

Also, there is the AEIOU factor.
shān
fēi
yīn
duō
jiǔ

Notice how the symbols are on different letters. Based on the famous A-E-I-O-U saying, you put the symbol on "a". If "a" isn't present, then you place the symbol on "e", and if "e" isn't present, you place it on "i", and so on.

Chinese spoken by locals in China and chinese spoken by people who live in other regions often sound different. This is because China speakers are well known for having a purer accent.

A little basics before I go; what to say when you meet somebody.
你好吗: ni2hao3ma.
How are you? [ the basic "hello" works fine, as well. ]

我很好, 谢谢你: wo3hen2hao3, xie4xieni.
literal translation: I'm fine, thank you.
Which technically means: I'm fine, thank you for asking.

Will type more later. I gotta go have lunch. :D

AuxunauxiaNoname
11-30-2006, 10:18 AM
Lol... well, I've learned a long time ago that FCs don't mind if you don't meet their requirements and just post.

In fact I've posted in fanclubs where I was not really for it, but rather obviously against it. Didn't get neg repped though. Lol. ^_^ because I was able to express my dislike in a non-offensive manner.

And about the tones... let me give my own explanation of it:

1 - first tone is like going up a hill. Open your mouth and say aaa while at the same time trace your finger in the air from some random point and drag it up.

The tone follows the motion of your finger.

2 - second tone is like running along a flat field. Say aaa, and at the same time make your finger move from left to right horizontally. Again, let the tone follow the motion

3 - third tone is like a valley. It goes down and up. Trace your finger and make it go down and then up, like you're writing a V. Make the tone follow the motion.

4 - fourth tone is like going down a steep hill, or tripping and falling. It goes down. Trace your finger from some random point in the air and drag it down. Make the tone follow the motion.

And there you have it.

Does this make any sense at all?

Oh, about the wei... Normally you only say that when you're talking on the phone. If you've noticed in animes, when they say Hi they say moshi-moshi. Sometimes I say wei! like I would say hey, but it is not in a greeting manner. Like you would say "Hey! I'm over here!", you wouldn't say "Hello! I'm over here!".

Sakura you are a really good teacher.Thanks.
Now it's my turn.

Though I am not a native speaker, my spelling is not bad.And as a foreigner I'd love to practice my Chinese.

REVIEW(also introduce myself)
我是日本人,(wo3 shi4 ri4 ben3 ren2)
我叫Haku。(wo3 jiao4 Haku)
你们好!(ni3 men2 hao3)

Today I will tell u something about numbers.

0 零(ling2)
1 一(yi1)
2 二(er4)but sometimes it can be 两(liang2)
3 三 (san1)
4 四 (si4)
5 五 (wu3)
6 六 (liu4)
7 七 (qi1)
8 八 (ba1)
9 九 (jiu3)
10 十 (shi2)
Well ,these numbers are eazy to remenber and write. If you want to ,I'll tell you how to count from 0 to 100^_^(that will be a bit difficult)

First 第一(di4 yi1)
second 第二(di4 er4)
……
so, you put a “第” (di4)be4 the number.

*In some cases ,the pronounciation changes
for example,When you say 一个人(yi2 ge4 ren2)which means A Person,一 should be yi2.

That's all.Thanks.

Oh wow. I never learned the kanji for zero.

It's so much more complicated than the other numbers. Strangely enough.

^_^ Thanks!

And I have a wierd idea. But before you freak, hear me out.

Let's do it this way:

Learn Chinese through Japanese.

That way we can practically learn two languages at once.

And do it this way:

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/ZHitokiwa/2ffsss.gif

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/ZHitokiwa/348.png

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d121/ZeHitokiwa/nejiten20_10.jpg

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d121/ZeHitokiwa/nikki257.png

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d121/ZeHitokiwa/nikki278.png

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d121/ZeHitokiwa/nikki479.png

Okay.

Now those are all Japanese doujishin.

They contain kanji... which we all know are actually Chinese characters.

And now we do it systematically pick out the kanji, and display it, and figure out what they mean.

Eh, Japanese is sorta a rip-off of chinese. Some of the same looking characters are even pronounced similarly, and mean the same thing. For example, "火“ in chinese means fire. But it would appear that it also means the same in japanese. Water is a better example. 水 in chinese means water, and is pronounced sui. In japanese, it's spelled sui as in Suiton and also written the same way. However, the kanji like the one on Gaara's forehead is slightly different then the original I think. 爱 is the chinese way to write love.

Japanese, and Korean were both based on Chinese.

Japanese used Chinese, Korean used Japanese.
Although I don't really care, sometimes its supposed to be.

Some Mexican words are the same as Cuban, or other languages relating to the "main" language. I think its good how they made a new language off a original, its a good idea.

Wow, I think it is better off teaching beginners simplified chinese because it's SIMPLER. For example; Mouth in Traditional is Zui3 ba and the calligraphy is so hard (well, bigger). While in Simplified it is just Kou3, and the calligraphy is just a box.......see simple. This is what I mean: http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b365/XNarutoXShinobiX/gfdghfh.png

Also, there are "rules" when writing chinese, like orders to write each word. I have scanned a paper I made because I was bored......anyways they go in order from which line to "draw" and which one takes priority over the first.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b365/XNarutoXShinobiX/Picture001-4.png

In chinese writing, most (if not all) characters start from top to bottom, left to right, and always build the foundation or frame of the character first, then work on the inside, then close it. These are just basics for starters.

Gaara's LOVE symbol looks the same as the traditional chinese "ai"; 爱 is simplified Chinese. :)

Just wondering- do you know any websites with lists of Chinese vocabulary? A whole list of those marker words (ge, ke, tiao, etc.) would be really helpful. When I say lists of vocabulary, I mean a list of certain words pertaining to a topic, like shui guo(fruits) or something. My main issue with Chinese is that I need to learn how to write the words, preferably in Traditional.

People looked me strange when I tell them that I was trying to learn chinese because they believe that it useless but I think not. I may not speak it at all or understand it but when I pick up words here and there from convo I feel proud because I actually know the meaning or topic a certain convo.

I have a question, i'm learning japanese kanji now. I remember this guy learning mandarin, a lot of the symbols are the same as kanji, but the dialect is different. Do the chinese use kanji for EVERY word. Do they not have a substitute alphabet like hiragana for kanji symbles that children do not know yet. I'm guessing it'll be well hard to learn.

The japanese complain that we assume japan and china are very similar, well they both use kanji, and most of japan and it's culture is derived from china as it's right next to it.

and tenten neji 55, i love your ten ten picture.

mr_shadow
02-01-2007, 11:01 AM
Yes, in china you use "kanji" for every word. It's not as hard as it sounds, as when reading roman letters you don't read it one letter at a time, but instead you see the word as a whole.

The only problem i'm having with the writing system is that it leads to language-conservatism. The characters were invented thousands of years ago, to describe the things that existed back then, and since then there have been few or no additions.

So if you want to talk about modern concepts you have to try and "describe" them using the existing inventory of characters. For example, you write "Fire wagon" instead of "train".

Some combinations are somewhat funny too. "Electric shadow" = Movie

very ancient Chinese originated from pictures drawn of things. Then it just evolved into what it is today. I personally think it would be harder to learn Japanese, considering you have to know all the Kanji, hiragana, katakana, or whatever. Aside from the traditional and simplified versions of Chinese, there isn't too many variations. smile-big

Hey, I'm one of those chinese people who went to America at a very young age and now suck a lot at Chinese. Its impossible for me to speak chinese because I just can't think of the words. If you try talking to me in Chinese, I'll understand a lot of what you said but a lot of times I won't either. Without subs on a chinese movie, i'm pretty much screwed and will be totally confused. However, this knowledge is still locked in there because I used to be fluent, even a bit literate.

But now, my chinese skills are rapidly deteriorating and I need some help. I want to start watching some Chinese movies and tv shows to reboot my memory. Can somebody please recommend me some good Chinese movies I can watch in sites like www.crunchyroll.com . Other than that, if you guys have good ways for me to reboot my memory, that would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: If those movies could have english subtitles, that would be appreciated. I don't think I'm ready to watch chinese movies w/o subtitles later. Hopefully, I'll reach that step sometime in the future.

I used to live in CA, US. That was about four years ago. So I'm kinda like you. My Chinese really, really sucks..I'm currently living in Taiwan btw. SO! Since I live in a Chinese-speaking environment, it's natural for a person's Chinese to improve faster. Though, I can give you some tips....(my chinese teacher suggested these)

Listen to Chinese music, try to make out the words they're singing, and after that, look at the lyrics.

Find Chinese novels with phonetic transcription (that's the small little words next to the Chinese character) such as: ㄓㄨˋ 一ㄣ ㄈㄨˊ ㄏㄠˋ (that's the phonetic transcription)

Seriously, try to use Chinese in your daily life. (You don't have to speak it out, just try to think up the word in your mind.)

PM if you have any questions....(i'm a little woozy right now...can't think clearly. I think it's the coffee acting up.)

does anyone know anything about the origins of pinyin (romanized chinese)? it seems rather nonsensical to me. example: Cixi, taken from my history book. pronunciation guide gives this as (TSOO SHEE). Why not actually use the letters that are pronounced that way and romanize it as Tsushi, or something similar?

ReikaiDemon
03-06-2007, 11:27 PM
Well, first, you have to learn bo po mo to learn how to read chinese, then it should be easier to learn how to speak it. If possible, read aloud from a novel in chinese, or translate passages of english in books to chinese, write it while reading out your writing. You could choose whether or not to download a series from d-addicts in the chinese dialect of your choice. They have english subs on some, so you can try to link what they say in chinese to the subs. You should have a pretty good grasp of it afterwards, though you may need to work on your accent somehow.

Why not actually use the letters that are pronounced that way and romanize it as Tsushi, or something similar?

Pinyin (litt: "write sound") was created by chinese linguists at the request of the government, in order to gain a means of "subtitleing" the native chinese characters. This enables the printing of character dictionaries (previously the only way of learning the pronouciation of an unknown character was to ask someone already familiar with it), as well as letting overseas chinese write their names in a way that can be read by foreigners in this globalized world. In short it was created for the same purpose as Hiragana/Katakana in Japan (the first japanese texts were written in Kanji only).

Prior to the 70-s, chinese was usualy romanized using the Wade-Giles system. This one was created in the 19th century (i think) by the two englishmen Wade and Giles. Their purpose was to publish chinese litterature in England, and thus they invented a set of spelling rules designed to give englishmen an idea of what a name sounded like.

For this reason, W-G is often the most intuitive of the two to a westerner, as everything is based on the english sounds of the letters.
W-G: Lao Tzu
Pinyin: Lao Zi

However, as everyone knows the meaning of chinese words change with the pronounciation. Therefore the chinese felt that W-G left too big a room for misunderstandings, as it did not accurately enogh distinguish between variations in pronounciation (Wade and Giles probably didn't bother, since their target audience had no clue about chinese grammar anyway).

Therefore Pinyin has alot of characters for something that sounds like the same sound. For example "Sh", "Ch", "X" and "Q" all sound like "sh" to a western ear. But to a chinese-speaker the difference is critical to understanding what someone is saying ("Xing" and "Qing" are not the same thing).

The reason for the seemingly odd choice of letters is because english only has one way of writing "sh". Luckily chinese lacks the sounds "ecks", "kyew" and "k" (when written as C). So the creators of Pinyin picked these left-over characters to represent the other 3 "sh"-sounds

First of all make shure you have the pronoiunciation right (watch Kung Fu-movies and listen to how they speak). If you go around saying "Nay Haw" to everyone you will not only sound like an idiot, but probably not be understood either.

Thanks for your help mr shadow, ill see if I can get a few movies out.
I got this CD from the library called In-Flight Mandarin Chinese, it tells you how to say all the words using native speakers. I tried that theory where you go to sleep with the CD on to see if I can learn it a bit better, I had a dreadful nights sleep. Only try that if you have comfitible headphones. We have quite a lot of Chinese people in my church, and they are teaching my Dad, so I might see if they can help teach me too.

Here are some sites for learning Chinese that I have come across.

"http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/chinese/" This is really good where I finally understood the tones properly.

"http://learnchinese.elanguageschool.net/" Haven't really been on this site much looks average to me.

"http://www.shambles.net/pages/learning/Mandarin/Mspeak/" This site is kinda like a web ring, there are some good sites coming off here.

Remember in your Guomindang mind that the People's Republic has converted to simplified for everyday writing. And since most people who learn chinese do it out of interest in the People's Republic it only causes headaces to learn traditional as a beginner.

But there might be some Taiwan-fans out there too, so go right ahead.

I just forget it after a long time of not using it. :( My stepdad says it's tiring listening to me say something in Chinese since first it barely makes sense and second there's always english entangled in it. AND I have to think about what to say for, like, ten minutes. :cry

One thing that's not covered very well in my chinese textbook:

Can someone give me a list of common "sound effects" used to express emotions. Such as "oh! [thats right!]", "Ah...[that sucks]", "Mmm [i agree]".

People who know only one language might think that such sounds are universal, but they are actually somewhat different in different languages so that they sound natural in the vocal flora of the language.

Plus i'm mainly looking for the characters here...

I found it funny how you have some traditional and some simplified. Anyway I'll correct some of this for you, so I return a fully traditional back to you guys. If anyone has questions on Chinese or even a bit of Taiwanese, give me a pm ore add me on msn. Been living here for about 5 years, Taiwan that is. Oh and so you guys know, I'm Taiwanese and i'm not white. Not matter how white my skin looks, I'm yellow.

I typed it in simplified using microsoft IME? It's probably your computer that converted it =P

In addition to what Qiuben's saying, they're all pronounced the same "de" (in Mandarin)--but 得 could be with a second tone and 地 is also the same word for ground (di 4).

But for the last de, 得, I think the rule is a bit loose on that. I mean, you can say 得到 (receive), but 到 wouldn't exactly be considered an adjective...I always just use 得 when no others fit.

Can someone give me a list of common "sound effects" used to express emotions. Such as "oh! [thats right!]", "Ah...[that sucks]", "Mmm [i agree]".

I just saw this. I'm pretty Americanized, so I don't know if all the sound effects are really what pure Chinese people would say. But...

ow = Ai ya! 哎呀! (my cousin made fun of me before for saying 'ow')

right! = dui! 对! Like, 对!我就说嘛。。。(I don't exactly know how to translate "就", if you haven't learned it before, but I think of "just" when I say it...though it doesn't really mean that)

Chinese people like using 嘛, 吧, 啦,啊,吗
ma, ba, la, a, ma?

Some people do, anyway. I think in Hong Kong, a lot of the people there like using "la" at the end of their sentences. It's just meant as an ending to sentences.

For the agreement thing, people are like mm. Not mm-hm (actually, I don't know, but I didn't hear that when I went to China). It's just like a lowering of your tone (like, the third tone, I guess). I don't think people would use that in writing though, so I don't think there's a character for it. In writing, it's just 对.

Anyway, I hope that helps :D

你好。 我叫艾美答。

I would love to learn Chinese and wouldn't mind practicing here if anyone's willing to help. I just recently started learning. I plan on learning the characters as I learn new words because I made the mistake of not doing that when I started Japanese, and it took me a while to catch up. And especially since there are more characters. But I have the IME installed so hopefully if I use them often enough I will learn.

Kemono, someone did post a few of the character's names on the previous page here (http://forums.narutofan.com/showpost.php?p=8212439&postcount=146), but I don't know where to find the voice actors. Someone else on the previous page also mentioned that there was a Cantonese dub of Naruto.

Yes, I've seen the Cantonese dub (loved it!) and as I collect some seiyuus' names in different dubs, I wanted to know those, and the Chinese translation of names (team Gai over all)
Cantonese is quite differently accented as I got: I was puzzled on Lee addressing Gai as 'Laotzî', until I understood he meant 'Laoshi' :amuse

There are a few Chinese dubs of Naruto. There's the Mandarin version and the Cantonese version. Basically you can get the Mandarin version in Mainland China, Taiwan or even Malaysia and Singapore. The Cantonese version, you'd have better luck in Hong Kong. The Mandarin version is very widespread, though, and it's not too expensive if you scrounge around.

As for translated Naruto names, I'll have to ask around a bit. I'll get back to you.

Also most newspapers and some songs are written in mandarin (grammar and words) in places like Hong Kong.

Both are used.

It doesn't matter about the language, its just the writing if you want to speak to the people who speak both languages.

Although they have different types of speaking, they have the same writing.
Beijing would be mandarin by the way.

Japanese used words, parts, from the chinese language and that is why lots of japanese words and stuff like that are part of the language.

The Japanese language originated from the Chinese language. And they used a lot of our writing too. :( The kanji for the word love is the exact same in both languages. Not all kanji are the same, though... some of them have completely different meanings even though they are the exact same.

And Mandarin is the most popular form of verbal Chinese, since it is the official language of China. But Cantonese is spoken in a good majority of China as well.

Hope I helped! :D

you should be flattered that koreans and japanese borrow the chinese language! :P it's just like how english borrowed words and things from spanish, french and latin.

I realise that chinese isn't anything like Japanese.
You have to write the correct pinyin in english for it to mean something. Cause the diff tones mean different words right?

(hah, im just learning...>.>;)

@luna jung:
does this look right to you? i typed in mandarin >.>
你好。我叫特蕾萨。你说英文吗?
nǐ hǎo. wǒ jiào tè lěi sà. nǐ shuō yīngwén ma?

Google and Download NJStar Chinese. It helps you to type in Chinese if your computer don't have it. Or if you only can speak/write pinyin (english letters), it can translate them to chinese characters, as long as you choose the right tone thingies (lol).

Like if you type "ma" it gives you the different tonals. And you have to choose what you want to make your sentence:

first few were:

mā 妈 = mum

mǎ 马 = horse

ma 吗 = sentence particle

[it makes more sense when you install it lool]

@ Inarigo

sorry I can't quite understand 'sashun'... lol~~
(对不起我不是很懂那个词是什么~~555~~我好失败啊~当然这是悄悄说的,嘻嘻,你们应该看不懂的,自 我调侃一下也没关系啦,咔咔)
but hope that you can use the method which Tatsuki told us,
(但是如果你能用Tatsuki说的那个方法把它打出来)
then I think I can know what do you mean~ ^.^
(我应该就能认识啦!这是必然...这也是悄悄说的,嗯)
I'm so sorry~~~ lol

@ Tatsuki

great!your chinese is not bad!
--你好。我叫特蕾萨。你说英文吗?
--nǐ hǎo. wǒ jiào tè lěi sà. nǐ shuō yīngwén ma?
you typed it totally correctly!
(I think I've made some serious mistake in English gramma...>.> just score me)
and as you know,
Chinese is acturely quite different from Janpanese.
*and I'm also learning Janpanese now, just a beginner*
especially in pinyin as you said.
so vocabulary seems to be the most important thing.
cauze gramma of Chinese is easy.
so if you wanna improve your Chinese,
the first thing to do is to enlarge your vocabulary.
(hope that I have expressed myself well...)
and がんばってください!加油吧!^.^

@ 春野 サクラ

excuse me that I'm not quite understand what does "put a link to chinese threaD" mean.........(I am mad....)
maybe you meant to put a link to a Chinese web??
sorry sorry my english is so poor >.<
And you can introduce yourself as sentence following:
(ah, i cannot type pinyin, so just use letters to sign the
pronunciation)
你好![ni hao] {means:hello}
(or 你们好[ni men hao] {means:hello every one} if you are introducing youself to more than one person)
我叫 春野樱。[wo jiao chun ye yin] {my name is sakura}(I don't know your true name, so use your ID)
很高兴见到你们。[hen gao xing jian dao ni men] {so glad to meet you}
希望和你们成为朋友。[xi wang he ni men cheng wei peng you] {hope to become good friends with you}
================================================== =
if you wanna more sentences to introduce,
please type them down,
in english is okay.
then i will translate them for you,
thank you ^.^

may i ask, which is the more popular, catonese or mandarin? (like which is more spoken in the world?)

i feel like learning chinese because it's a lovely language, i also have many friends from beijing.

would the characters in chinese be the same as kanji in japanese?

because my mother told me they stole/borrow it from the chinese. i know nothing about history so i wouldn't know. XD

Well, I would said is Mandarin since it's the official language in China. All of the Chinese in the world said that. For Cantonese, It is probably the second popular dialect. As for me, I also spoke a dialect in the Fujian/ Taiwan region which known as Ban Lam Gu(闽南语). In South East Asia, We called that Hokkien dialect(Hokkien is Ban Lam Gu"s pronociation for Fujian(福建))

As for chinese character, there some similarity in kanji. But there are also some characters are only exist in Kanji/ Chinese.

By the way, this is my first time in this forum. And my english is a little bit sucks. So, 多多指教!!!

Ok, just curious. What kind of question that you guys got in Chinese? The pronouciation? The grammar? The Vocabulary? You can feel free to ask. I'll try my best to give you guys the best answer.

For vocabulary, Please! I mean PLEASE! write the proper Han Yu Pin yin. If possible, explain what kind the situation that the word came out or give the whole sentences. I know this is mean for the beginners but I have no confident in guessing the word since Chinese Mandarin had 4 different tones in each pronouciation of the word.

By the way, it is better if you have any copy of the words, you can even post the traditional chinese character. I'm sure in that way, you can get your answer way more easier...
