View Full Version : AOI's GiF AnImation TuToRial = Virtualdub + imageready

It has been a long time i've posted something here. And i saw some threads about imageready. So here's a nice tutorial if you are new with Gif animation.

We gonna be making this:
http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/neji.gif

What do you need?
- Virtualdub http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/virtualdub/VirtualDub-1.6.3.zip?download
- Imageready this is included with Photoshop
It's not free so you have to download it somewhere, try bittorrent or kazaa or something. I'm sure you'll find it.

What else do i need?
- A avi, or movie to load in Virtualdub, for example Naruto_100RAW.avi etc....
- Make a folder on your desktop and call it "Test"

I'm gonna keep it very simple, so you don't have to use much of your brain :laugh

Ok let's go!! ►
We need virtualdub to make a movie into a sequence of images, which we can put together in Imageready to create those Gif animations.
So Extract Virtualdub to your computer and start the virtualdub.exe

http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/1.jpg

*GO TO File open Video (or CONTROL + O)

Now the movie loads in 2 screens, we don't really need to pay attention to it.
Just make sure you resize them so that you can edit the time line.

Go to the desired timeframe and press BEGIN (the begin of your image sequence). After that, keep clicking on 1 FRAME FORWARD until you think the action has stopped. After that click END (the end of your image sequence)
http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/step.gif

Aoi
01-14-2005, 10:31 PM
Be careful not to make a selection bigger than 300 frames because that will work very slow with editing.
Only thing we have to do now is to save the sequence.

http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/12.jpg

*GO TO File save Image Sequence

http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/2.jpg

You will save the images to your "Test" folder (Or any folder you like the images to be in) on your desktop
*.tga is recommend it will keep the images smallest.

http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/step.gif

Aoi
01-14-2005, 10:34 PM
And after you press ok you'll see this.

http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/3.jpg

And if you look in your "test" folder, you will see the images from
0000001.tga to 0000200.tga Or something like that.

Now start Imageready and go to file import folder as frames

http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/4.jpg

ANd see this
http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/5.jpg

http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/step.gif

Aoi
01-14-2005, 10:38 PM
Go (above in the toolbar) to image > imagesize and reduce it to 100 x 75 (or use your own settings)

http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/6.jpg

Now the whole sequence has been reduced to 100 x 75

http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/7.jpg

Just look to this image, you will understand where all the images are coming from. Upperleft bar is the preview window, the bar below is the timeframe, the bar on the right is the layer frame. We will only use the timeframe in this tutorial.
WARNING: You can only edit the image if you set the preview window to Original, and NOT to Optimized

http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/step.gif

Aoi
01-14-2005, 10:41 PM
If you click optimized you'll see some usefull data

http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/8.jpg

That's pretty big for a gif animation so we'll have to reduced that.
Removing frames is the simplest way to reduce size.

http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/9.jpg

(first go back to original preview mode)
Select a frame, and hold shift till the last frame you want to delete. And press the recycle bin.
And remove the frames

http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/step.gif

Aoi
01-14-2005, 10:44 PM
Now edit the refreshrate of the images, i used 0.03 seconds. (delay time)

http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/10.jpg

After that *GO TO File > save optimized as MyAnimation.gif

http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/11.jpg

http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/step.gif

Aoi
01-14-2005, 10:49 PM
And enjoy your own gif animation!!!

IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Internet Explorer users expierence a slower refreshrate than FIREFOX users. So keep in mind that u do not want your refreshrate to get lower than 0.04 seconds.

As example about how different browsers perform:

http://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/neji1.gifhttp://members.home.nl/epox/tutorial/neji2.gif

If you have questions about the gif size, or dimensions. You can ask them here, for the comfort of this tutorial i've kept those settings away. But you might wanna take a look in CANVAS size and plugin settings.

Succes.
Aoi.

Ow yeah, i had that problem too, a long time ago. It seems the RAW versions of a Naruto episode have some kind of weird codec...
Just download all different codecs, but no hacks.. I downloaded the nimo codec pack and my error dissapeared.
If that doesn't work, try google.
This may be the solution: http://forum.digital-digest.com/archive/topic/37401-1.html

Do a google search for Divx 3 , even if u have divx 4 or 5, you will still need 3 to playback those codecs on Virtual Dub. Download, install and try to play the file in Dub, it will give you an alert saying something , just bypass that and the movie will play :)

uzumaki-unk_chaos
03-08-2005, 01:08 PM
That's a great tutorial, i used to do it frame by frame in virtualdub using the copy frame option, then resize pics, etc.... So much easier and faster. I didn't really like imageready, it kept on feeding on my rams soo much for just about 240 frames at start, so i found a way to do it in Ulead GIF Animator 5, and that was much faster and too alot less time too.

Hello - I hope someone can help me. I'm making little animated Narusmilies, and I'm having problems keeping it transparent.

Case in point: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y74/skmt999/MizukiBSpin.gif

I can't get rid of the white background. Or, even worse - when I do, I get a creepy negative effect from ALL of the black turning transparent. (that's when I use 'first pixel' for the transparency)

I've tried a lot of things, and I just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Anybody have some tips or hints? *runs off to armwrestle with the freeware again*

ah, is it good also for me to use virtual dub and edit in gif movie gear? Cuz I did bleach episode 31, and the color of the gif is alittle screwy. I want it to be crystal clear like the anime itself in its 640x480. I don't like the outcome that much:

De Monies
01-30-2006, 12:47 PM
yomax, firstly yeah, you will have to completely cut down on frames, the avatar only takes about 10 frames until you make more then 2,000 posts D:
and it's a little too wide to fit into the 125x125 maximum size as well D:

@eileenting88 - I'd use a different codec.. when do you get it? when you open the file? or when you're trying to save it? or any other time.. try downloading divX codec (just google it) and your problem should be solved.. sorry if it doesnt work =\
