Similar to Comic Book Guy's style versus style, TKD vs. BJJ matchup, this pits the new popular martial art, BJJ, against the art that it was created from, Judo.

BJJ is based upon the premise that most fights will somehow end up on the ground, so it's students train to be the best fighters on the ground, by trapping the opponent and using leverage and their own limbs as fulcrums to break the joints of their opponents. This equals to so-so standup grappling, since it's mostly neglected, but amazing ground fighting.

Judo is based upon the premise that you should take and capitalize on the opportunity given by your opponent's loss of balance and equilibrium, and also the added ground element. This is the the foundation of all of it's dozens of different throwing techniques, for which Judo is known for. That's right.......not a goddamn chop!:shakefist

What say you?

Rarely is one form of martial arts superior to the other. It all depends on who's using it.

Feel good logic. Some martial arts are simply more practical than others. In the case of pure judo vs pure bjj, assuming that both are the same weight and in the same physical condition, I would give it to bjj. And before anyone bitches, I am a practitioner of both (yes, I know about 42yr old 138lb Helio vs 32yr old 220lb Kimura). Bjj simply is more well rounded than Judo. Especially traditional Judo.

Judo is for wussies.
I know a lot of people you wouldn't say that to in real life.

Sakuraba .
He's a catch wrestler. Fedor, Nakamura, Parisyan, Misaki, and Akiyama are good examples of Judo fighters.

Bjj simply is more well rounded than Judo. Especially traditional Judo.I disagree. I would think that "traditional" Judo would have been more well rounded than today's modern style, since of the rule changes in competition.

I was under the impression that Judo as Kano taught it was prevalent on both standup grappling and ground fighting, even though Kano himself seemed(to me at least) to have a greater affinity to throws and takedowns.

Many Judo schools today focus so much on throws, that ground techniques are almost considered secondary.

When I say "traditional" I mean the sport of Judo in general. Look at how people like Nakamura, Akiyama, and Parisyan modified their Judo.

Theres a reason why all the ultimate fighters use jujutsu and kick boxing.

The first tournament to see which martial art was the best was won by a jujutsu. Then after jujustu kept winning everyone was jujutsu/something else. Then, jujutsu/kickboxing was winning.
(I used to have a roommate that was in ultimate fighting. =D)

Anyway, this has already been tested. A pure bjj beats a pure judo.
BJJ is more practical in hand-to-hand.
