Actually, the articulation of the 1/144 NG / HG kits is so poor there is no real point in buying them unless you plan on modifying them alot.
Buy a 1/100 HG kit or maybe a MG kit.

lol I haven't built a 1/144 HG in a long time, I built like maybe 3 of them then just bought 1/100 HGs. MGs are really fun, never built PG yet hope to one day if they release a really awesome Katoki Freedom :)
Btw does anyone know what kinda spray they use to give the plastic that texture in one of the links posted a page back or so?

Texture? You mean the grey color that you usually have under the paint? If that's what you mean then it's the primer to make the paint adhere properly (so you don't rub it off when touching the kit.
You can prime kits in a great variety of colors depending on the final finish you want. Most of the time I prime my kits white or grey since it's a fairly neutral color. Some use black primer because they want to shade the parts (around panel lines for example).

You can't judge a model from that.
Sanding dosen't ruin the plastic, at least not if you plan on painting it. I go at kits like this:
Cut all parts from the sprue.
Clean all the parts from residue from the spure.
Clean the parts in a bath overnight.
Dry the parts.
Prime them.
Paint them the intended color.
Put a coat or two of future floor finish over the paint (to protect it).
Put on a wash (for panel lines).
Another coat of future or final coat of gloss / flat clear to seal everything and get the finish you want on the kit.

take a bath? so submerge all the pieces? whats the point in doing that? arent they already clean? anyhow, seems like so much work and i had a hard time taking my time doing panel lines. didnt do any of the finish stuff. ah well. it was a good 20hrs.

When they mold the parts they have a solvent in the molds so that you can take out the sprue without breaking anything. Some of this may be left and prevent paint from properly adhering to the kit.
Usually primer is enough to solve this but sometimes it's good to clean it before primer too.
20 hours for panel lines? Wow. It's a matter of minutes maybe an hour or two if I include drying times.
A model straight out of the box for me takes week or two for me. The latest one however took a few months because of extensive modifications.
Gonna work on my Nissan 300ZX now.

How popular? Well, modelling in general is quite big in Sweden. The biggest classic car magazine, Wheels, often have articles from model shows here in Sweden. But of course, it's only cars, bikes and stuff.
Then we have a fair share of figurepainters, aircraft builders and tank builders, hell anything WWII is quite popular here when it comes to modelling.
But then we have Gundams, or models related to the anime culture in general. They sell toys and stuff from like Hellsing and Devil May Cry but no 1/4 scale resin figures or stuff like that. I bought a 1/100 LED Mirage 'Prince Sarion' (from a series called Five Star Stories, cost me about 26 000 Yen) from HLJ. I'm quite sure I'm the only one in Sweden that owns a kit like that or any model like that for that matter.
I'm sure Gundams could be a hit here, it's just that they have never shown it on Cartoon Network or whatever. Card Captor Sakura aired on TV last year but that's far from Mecha.
Conclusion: I know of no modeler in Sweden that builds Gundams. In other words, it's very rare.

the snap on model kits from bandai are not really hard to build... there are no english manuals but the manuals include pictures which you can follow. an HG 1/144 kit should take only 10-20 mins to complete if you don't paint them...
now resin kits like the one mindless is doing is for another level of model builders... :amuse
Mindless

Yeah, I wouldn't attempt building resin kits unless you have a couple of years of modeling experience. This particular resin kit costs about $170 so it's alot of money going wasted if you don't know how to build it properly.
The normal kits from Bandai aren't very hard to build. A HG 1/100 kit shouldn't take more than a couple of hours to complete. A MG kit can take a bit longer since they vary alot both in number of parts and size.
I usually buy my kits from HobbyLink Japan (www.hlj.com). But of course, there are other places you can buy Gundam kits too.

Mindless
02-19-2007, 01:17 PM
It's quite hard to explain.
Resin has a completely different feel to it, alot more refined, even the smell of resin is special. Unlike injection plastic you can sculpt it. Guess I'll have to quote Morpheus from The Matrix: "You cannot be told what resin is, you have to build it for yourself."
Well, it's kind of like that anyway. :P

Buy what? A resin kit?
If what I've gathered from the stuff you've told us here is somewhat accurate, I'd say you're not ready to start building resin kits. Putting together and completing a resin kit is far more complex than a typical gundam model. However, if you do feel ready for a resin kit, by all means, buy one. Just a piece of advice: read alot about them before building it. Gamerabaenre (http://www.gamerabaenre.com/gameramodelpage.htm)
has built alot of resin kits and has very detailed in-progress pictures aswell as different techniques.
staradder:
You do that. In my opinion, they are alot funnier to work with than typical injection plastic kits but that might be because I like to work with my hands more. However, resin kits tend to be aimed at the 'higher end' of the modelers, so not many shops carry them. Dunno about your place though.
But as I suggested above, read up alot about them before building. I learned it the hard way.
staradderdragoon
02-22-2007, 12:15 AM
^awesome. thanks! i will read up on it before i do anything.
i am curious though. how do u put the pieces together? glue? i'm downloading the tutorial right now, but i figure this would be faster.
Mindless
02-22-2007, 02:25 PM
Well, this particular kit had such nice fit so you could just glue them like any other IP kit.
However, in most cases I'd say, you have to pin the parts together.
You do this by drilling a hole and inserting a metal pin (a 1mm diameter pin for example) into the part and drill a hole in the other part where it's supposed to be attached. To do this properly, you have to measure exactly where the hole is supposed to be drilled, else the fit will be messed up.
This is where some of the 'past modeling' experience comes into play, but most of it is generally when fixing uneven areas and inconsistencies in the resin. Lots of putty is something that is pretty much typical for resin kits, unless the molds are very, very good.
staradderdragoon
02-22-2007, 06:11 PM
oOo. now i see. i think i get it now. they're solid pieces unlike the plastic injection kits right? do u have to buy the metal pins?
Mindless
02-22-2007, 08:29 PM
Yeah, they are solid.
The pins are not included so yes, you have to buy them. HLJ sells Kotobukia (at least I think it's Kotobukiya) brass rods that can be used for pinning, but pretty much any metal rod should do. You can probably find metal rods at pretty much any hardware store.

It's basically new chest details, skirts, legs, feet and shoulders and since I was a 'special customer' he threw in a Hi-Nu resin head together with it.
The conversion kit gives the Nu a much more powerful and beefy look. You'll see the difference on the pictures once I get hold of a camera.

Can someone explain putty to me? I know that there is different kinds for different stuff, but I don't know each kind at what they're for.
I know one kind is for getting rid of seams, but I've also seen the Tamiya Cement which seems to get rid of seams very well, so what's the point of puttying and how do you do it? In this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gSq8_9Js2c&mode=related&search=
it shows them spreading the putty in the gaps of the parts, but I don't really get it. Can someone explain just exactly why to use putty and the types?
Mindless
03-20-2007, 05:17 PM
It really depends.
The epoxy putty seen in this movie is often used to fill smaller cavities (as seen in the clip) while other types of putty are better to use when filling uneven areas in the plastic.
The point of it? Well, it's a useful tool. I use it alot for filling seams and other things on my model kits. As for how you do it, it's explained pretty well in this clip. You mix the two compounds (one part hardener and one part putty) then put it into the gap you want to fill and after it has cured fully, you can cut off any excess with a knife then sand / file it down.
Oh, and I finally got my kit ready for primer.

Thanks for answering.
So it's good for filling seams, but isn't the Tamiya Extra Thin Cement also good for that? Is there an advantage that putty has?
Also, I've read that epoxy putty is more sculpting and not filling seams. What type of putty is for filling seams and where can I get some? Sculpting/Scratch building is a little out of my league at the moment.

oooooo, MG Hi-Nu looks sweet...what's the project time so far?
Mindless
03-20-2007, 07:33 PM
Cement is the most common way to fill seams. Putty has no real advantage over cement when it comes to filling seams but I guess some prefer putty because it adds more 'material' (so you don't sand away too much for example) than cement.
I guess epoxy putty is more for sculpting / filling big gaps while conventional one-part putty (not the two-part epoxy) is more for filling smaller inconsistencies and seams.
Where you can get some? Local hobby shop I guess, if you have one that is. Otherwise you can find it over at www.hlj.com
staradder: Yeah, it's a great kit. I was very sceptical at first because it looks nothing like what the Hi-Nu really looks like but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

Mindless, what kind of Primer do you recommend using?
I think I'm going to pick up modelling supplies for this summer to catch up on some kits... Is MG Strike Freedom worth buying? The Dragoon display looks nice, imo.
Edit:
Is this the result of using a primer to get that texture?

ive got a MG freedom. a strike freedom would be nice to add to my collection...so primer takes away that shine...

The primer I use is from PlasticPadding (a Swedish brand), but I'm sure any other brand will work just as well. Some prefer Mr.Surfacer while others prefer Tamiya or some other brand. The difference between them isn't too big as they all fill the same purpose, which is mainly to help paint adhere to the plastic.
Regarding the Strike Freedom. Well, it sure looks like a nice kit. I've seen a few detailed in-progress threads of it and they all seemed to like building it, so, go for it.
And yes, that is a primed piece.
EDIT: Forgot. Here's some WIP pictures of my Hi-Nu. Changed the angle of the funnel racks with a quick mod because they looked nothing like they were supposed to.

Also added some aftermarket metal thrusters to it.

And that Nu Gundam looks really nice, is it a fun build?

get the MG Strike Freedom, as for the Nu Gundam it's a bit on the challenging side, took me a few months to work on it, but it's worth the 56 bucks

I'm only a snap-builder and panel line type of guy since I use my painting and customizing mainly on my Zoids. Aside from that I really like the articulation of MG Gundams so I like to fiddle with them and take pictures so I stay away from painting. So I guess I'm more of a collector than a modeller in the case of Gundams. Here's my list of Gundams:
MG Freedom
MG Aile Strike
MG Shining
MG Spiegel
I have MG Strike Rouge and Strike + IWSP on the way. I am also a Strike Gundam fan fyi.

Well this thread needed a bump sometime, and I figure whats better than Gundam 00 premiering to do it?
So I'm not bumping this just to bump it, but I got a legitimate question, I'm Gonna go about Ordering 1/100 Models later this year(preferable 00 Models) but as of now I'm just gonna get a SD Exia. Now in the past i've used a regular old ball point pen for lining and I just do want to rub off the excess anymore so what's a good pen for lining, and do they make special pens for it like they do with colors? Also are they cheap or am I gonna have to be spending more than a regular pen on one?

I use a VERY fine tipped marker. You can get them usually at any store, and they are most of the time classified as "Extra Fine" or something like that. They seem to work out the best IMO. Just don't get a sharpie, as they are considerably harder to "wipe away" if you make some mistake lol.

I did get some of the HQ Gundam Wings Models way back in 2000 when the show was popular. Now they are all broken in pieces and somewhere in crates in the garage (12 years old at the time, they were toys in my eyes)
So present day, I did start buying some again since I was building Warhammer Models. Currently I have bought two Master Grades (Strike Freedom and Wing Zero custom) and I like the articulation they have. I really love the Strike Freedom Model since I bought the $72 Special Edition one that came with a sick display stand that you can put all the missles on to make it look like they were flying around him.
Then I bought a HQ 1/60 of God Gundam, which was disappointing because I broke the light wires when trying to get it all hooked up and when the model was finished, it was falling apart. I didn't like the size much so I'm thinking about getting the Master Grade version.

Thought I bump this thread as I await my 00 Gundam+O-Raiser Combo Pack that comes with a pretty cool stand.
Also bought the 1/100 of Gundam Exia. It's alright, but was a bit disappointed that the hands aren't moveable like the Gundam Wing Models were for 1/100 HGs.

damn its been a while since i last visited this thread. though id try to get some opinions about something. one of my friends is going to hong kong and christmas is coming up. now i can either buy the MG version of strike freedom or have my best friend buy me the conversion kit. im tempted to just buy the MG since my current freedom is missing half of its head and im not sure if the conversion kit will replace all of that. not to mention the conversion kit requires me to buy paint and stuff. but for some reason, the conversion kit looks better. like i know its more detailed than the MG but it looks better. There are just slight differences. im not sure what it is. but which one should i get?

NG 1/100 Exia
NG 1/100 Strike Aile
NG 1/00 Gundam Exia
NG 1/100 Arios Gundam
GN 1/144 Archer.

I also, wanted to get some older Wing models, but I heard they are pretty fragile by today's models standards.

Ugh, I have horrible luck at gundam modelling....
I failed at a Master grade Rick-Dom
Then sort of suceed on a Master Grade Char custom Gelgoog
Then my 4 year old cousin uses them as action figure for a day and sort of destroyed the Ped-Comets mobile suit, but the crap Dom was perfectly fine.
Finall, I make a 1/144 Sazabi perfectly... and a 3 year old beaks it into pieces and uses the pieces as marbles.....:cry

Do your models ever magically fall over inside your glass cabinet? Like by the power of gravity and spite or something?

My models? Not that I know of. They are quite safe and secure due to stands and bases to give my model kits a flying pose.

I always put them in perfect poses. If I want some extreme posing, I sometimes use fishwire to string them up.

So I got home yesterday and there was a big box waiting at the front door and I thought "WOO my Exia is here!" Picked it up, was light like they usually are and took it to my room. Didn't bother opening the box till later that night because I knew I wouldnt be constructing the model for a couple weeks.
Opened it, it wasn't my Exia......
It was my new kick pedal for Guitar Hero! :doh
I was disappointed and happy at the same time :laugh I was going to take pictures of the Exia box to make people jealous but that didn't work out.
But now I can finally play Guitar Hero drums again so I'm happy anyway :grin
Now just need to wait for Exia again.

During this weekend I decided to to as much done as I could.
Here are some pics of my progress. (Sorry about my photography skill, I don't know how to work my camera well)
http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/5799/p9190017.jpg
http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/8746/p9190033.jpg
The lower section bends from side to side for more flexible poses.
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/4726/p9190035.jpg
This thing is really bright.
http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/2751/p9200041.jpg
The head is one of the most detailed heads I've done on an MG model.
http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/1218/p9200047.jpg
It has sharingan! lol. Cant see it that well but it does. A shame that it is covered up.
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/9266/p9200050.jpg
Really flexible. Especially the feet which has the front "toe" as a separate part
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/4135/p9200063.jpg
This has to be the most flexible kit I've ever built.
http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/5425/p9200068.jpg
I like the light up drive hehe
So that's as far I've got this weekend and won't be able to do anymore during the week because I can't work on it at night. The light is too horrible to see what I'm doing.
Only things left are the weapons and repair parts.
I'm disappointed some of the repair parts aren't completely different parts. I have to disassemble some parts so I can replace them with the repair parts.

For being a girl, people might be shocked that I've actually done some of these! It tends to seem to be something guys do more.
Anyway, I have put together the model of the Blitz Gundam.
I've also put together....hmm...forget the name of it off the top of my head but it's Heine's Gundam in Gundam Seed Destiny. That orange one.
I also have Yzak's Duel Gundam and a model of the Archangel but I haven't put them together yet.
It's fun to put them together although it really does take hours! lol.

Gekigangar
10-10-2009, 03:03 PM
Yes indeed. Quite a list. Must have cost you quite a lot.
What's interesting that what is expensive is not the kit itself, but the modeling materials required to do the kit.
Sandpaper, liquid cement, paint, etc...
IchiTenshou
10-10-2009, 03:06 PM
and those r MG as well
I just got 2 HGs and 2 NGs xD
Gekigangar

Don't buy so many HGs and NGs and you might be able to save enough for a MG.
Quality over quantity.... smile-big
I'm sure your collection will grow soon enough...

Man, this was a fun model to build. Especially after having last built an MG Zeta v1.0. You really see how the technique in models evolved. The v1.0 of the Zeta doesn't have an frame so like... yeah.
You can guess what kind of a mess that thing is to pose (you can kinda see it in the background in the second picture). Especially compared to this one, which can do fucking ballet poses.
