Well before I do a 1/100 scale model I just bought a SD Aegis Gundam model, I said before I was gona do a paint job on my MG 1/100 God Gundam but I figured the only part that would really need paint was the thrusters and meh I cheaped out. Plus I know SDs look bad with no paint so I just figured I'd do a practice one.

Well this might be old news but I jsut saw that the Extra finish Impulse and Freedom came out already
although ImageAnime labels it as the "Chrome Version"
1/100 Force Impulse Sword Silhouette Extra Finish Version
http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN938528
1/100 MG Freedom Gundam Extra Finish
http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN938527
bleh, how come Freedom gets to be a MG and Impulse is only a HG >_>
Looks like the first MG from Destiny is Freedom.
But they look nice lol..at least the boxart does, but 70$ and 90$ is alot of fuckin money lol
If it was Destiny I wouldn't hesitate to get it =P
The boxarts are tight as hell though lol, if they were cheap, I'd get them just for the boxart.

Speaking of MG, I wonder which ones they'll make...I'm hoping they do Destiny just because I love Destiny.
HG Strike Freedom is also out, already have 1/100 so not gon get that, but still getting 1/144HG Destiny because I am a Destiny Gundam nut.
thats all.
so who's going to get the "Chrome Version"/Extra Finish models =P
I might get Impulse if they don't make a MG Impulse or a Blast Impulse. (yes I still want a Blast Impulse :)

BTW, not sure if that was posted, but if you have the boxart of Freedom on the right of impulse, it will actually became a scene!

for the ones posted before the extra finish posts... 1/144s are definitely harder to paint but they are cheaper compared to the 1/100s... and since i already had experience in painting a 1/144, i think this one will be easier... btw i already bought the HG 1/144 duel assault shroud. actually i found a store where they sell the seed and hguc lines a lot cheaper...:laugh my only problem now is the paint... does anyone have a translation for the color guide? and uhm... oh! i bought some paint markers for this build... one for the pannel lines and one for the green eyes and cameras... and you know what? I LOVE THE MARKERS!:laugh as for the status of my duel: i have painted spruce b which is the all white spruce... i even added some pannel lines to some parts:amuse hopefully i can buy paints and an airbrush next week... and finally finish this model before my sales talk presentation for my speech class... because i'll be using them as props! haha! i'll be talking in front trying to sell Bandai model kits:amuse

the idea for those models is that you do not need to paint them:P

I don't know myself yet what kind of plastic the gundam models are molded in, but I guess it could work with thinner or some sort of alcohol (not the kind you drink). However, if you have painted something near where you made the errors: I wouldn't suggest using any type of alcohol-based cleaning thing, because it will remove the paint.

hmm... if that pen is 1.0 tip then it really is thick for any scale size... the official gundam panel line markers are 0.4 or 0.3 i forgot...:P im outside right now so i dunn have my marker... anyway try using 0.5 or smaller tip pens... 0.5 will be the thickest you can use... for maybe a 1/100... i've used one on a 1/144 and i did not like it at all... it was sooo darn messy...

Oh guys. You wont believe this...
I...
Now...
Have...
My...
ZETA GUNDAM!
YES! At last it has arrived! :laugh
God I'm so glad. The reason for the delay was that it has been checked in the customs. On both packages I believe they added a fee of 150SEK, roughly $20.
I haven't gotten the Nu Gundam yet, but it should be here in the morning. Oh joy!
And just wow. The molds are splendid. I did a quick check up on the stuff as soon as my dad picked it up at the post office and came home with it. I was really surprised because these models seem to have excellent mold quality and superb detail. I'm going to study the molds some more now.
*so happy*
Oh yeah. Got to resize the manual for it. That stuff is too small. :S
And I need to think up a color scheme for it. I was thinking something like white/green/dark green. :)
EDIT: And I must say, they know how to send their packages. They send the cheapest model with only the model inside the box, and that alone got 150SEK taxes ($20~), that package costed me 4400Y. The Nu Gundam alone costs 5000Y, then with taxes on the item. Then the money it costs for them to process the item, and then tax on processing the items (yes, I am not joking, they do that. The price to go trough customs was 79SEK (roughly $10), which wasn't alot, but then all the taxes...
Gah...
Anyway. I am glad I have it. But I must say, the manual is very odd and hard to interpret. It's like it's jumping left and right, and the pictures of the parts were soooo small.

Yeah, I will. Going to start working a bit on the head today I believe, at least the inside of it (eyes).
Unfortunately, no Nu Gundam today. :sad
Hope I'll get it tomorrow then.
But I must say. These models are quite sophisticated. I counted all the parts on the Zeta Gundam. It had a stunning (!), 296 parts (think thats what it was). Anyway, a hell lot of parts.
Something that made me confused though was that you don't build the skeleton first, then put all armor on it. You build the skeleton into all the parts as you make the legs, arms, torso, etc. :S
And I've decided on a color theme. Instead of the blue I'll go with a light green. It should turn out very good I think. :)
EDIT: And the Strike Freedom Flash Edition is all too tempting. I don't know how long I can keep myself from not pressing the pre-order button. :amuse

i was soooooo damn bored yesterday and i was sooo damn tempted to build the model... and i did build it with some minor painting jobs on the duel... i used a combination of sprays and paint markers... though i still do not have the yellow orange paint for the assaultshroud armor... but it really turned out nice... i only have minor problems on the model though... very limited torso twist, and the assaultshroud robs the arms and the legs of some movement... overall though i think its one of the better models i have ever done...:laugh maybe i'll post pics when i finish painting it...

Goodness! I'm so glad that you got a package Mindless. For a minute I thought it wasn't going to come. Heh, when your Nu Gundam comes I think you'll be surprised at the number of parts including the two die-cast parts for the legs. It's not as complex as one might think though.
I'm definitely going to follow through with that list of models I posted earlier. The Strike Freedom Flash Edition is indeed too vicious to pass up, and I've now added the MG Zeta Gundam ver. 2.0 to that list.

The 1/100 Red Frame is a very, very good model. If you are thinking about getting it, stop thinking about it and get it. You will need to do some painting, especially with the sword (not the blade though) to make it look just right, but it's an awesome model.

I got to go get some spray paints for my Zeta. The paints I have are the ones I intend to use on the Nu Gundam (when I get it, and after I finish the Zeta).
I painted one part yesterday, and that was the inside of the head, where you put the decals for the eyes on. But I painted the eyes with some green paint instead. Turned out good. :)
But yeah, as you said Chillin. The Strike Freedom Flash Edition is definately too good to pass up. Just the 1/60 scale makes you want it. It will be huge. And when (if, but I probably will) buy it, I'll make it with the idea I had in mind before. Paint it black with shades of lighter and darker gray on different parts, black and gloss black paints, and some red.

anyway i have finished painting my HG 1/144 Duel. I just have a few rants... the normal duel config is great... very posable but no torso twist... the assaultshroud armor on the otherhand takes away a lot of posablity from duel... a lot from the arms and a bit on the legs... but overall i still like it here are some pictures...

hi everyone i was hoping if all you expert model builders could answer a quesiton for me. I have bought 2 verions of wing zero custom. The 1/144 HG scale and the 1/100 MG scale, and neither of them can combine the buster rifles so 2 hands can hold them! Is it just bad luck or can the model not hold the combined buster rifles with 2 hands? The box shows the model doing the famous double buster shot thing like in the movie! If it is then it should be able to hold a combined rifle. This kit has a seperate chest piece thats just made for it to hold the combined rifle.

144 HG should be able to do the trick. I think it comes with 2 torsos which one of them has foward leaning shoulder joints allow you combine the rifle.
You should be able to do it with MG grade (require little work), however I dont think you can have both hands holding both handles. What you can do is to fold one of the handles and have one hand grab the other handle, while have the other hand reach under the rifle faking the pose (Normally you wont be able to tell from above, it looks just like WZC is holding combined rifle with both hands.
If you really want one model can hold both rifles with no problem at all, get the PG WZC. I believe you can get it around $115 (I got it from Toyrus sale for 108), but the wings on PG is not as great as the MG.

thanks for the help you guys. Yeah i have the non Ka version it looks just like the pic posted except not as cool with the paint. So i guess i can't use both hands to hold the gun.... But when i try it with one hand the gun like drops down cause the one arm isn't strong enough to hold the huge gun for my master grade. As for my high grade i have the same problem ,and yes i did change the torso for it to hold the gun. I can never get the two arms to go under and work out for some reason. what do you guys make the free hand do, like make a fist or open the hand to hold the other hand?
Do you guys have any tips as to making it work. I really appreciate it since thats like the only pose i ever want my wing zero to be in.

HG 1/100
Wing Zero Custom
Sandrock custom
Nataku
HG 1/144
Freedom
(I am pretty sure they are going to make PG freedom, so I will hold back on MG)
NG 1/144
Wing zero
Altron
MG 1/100
Gundam MK II
Zeta (one of the over bashed model. For about $30, it's a great buy. It's also probably the only MG model with LED light. The most annoying part about the model is its hands. Somehow they are different from standard MG(5 pieces) and made into 6 pieces which split the 3 fingers right from the middle. The result is that gundam wont be able to hold a damn thing. You can use a pair of hands from other gundams to fix this problem...)
Zaku II The most HG MG model. No inner merchan what's so ever.
EZ-8 Amazing inner frame. Also includes a wide range of weapons.
Strike Launching pad action is the most attracting part. But I hate it when they simply made the skeleton of leg with 2 pieces. Also experienced trouble opening cockpit.
GP01FB Most amazing MG so far. It can do pretty much everything a PG can. If there is anything wrong with it, it's the shield. I dont recall the shield retracted the way the model does in OVA. Also require quite a bit of paint work on thursters.
GP02 The box is huge, but the parts are quite simple. The shield and the bozooka are too heavy for gundam's tiny hands. I highly recommend SD GP02 over the MG, since the SD GP02 has the same design on shoulder thursters allow them to move at same angle.

If you know how Bandai works, I really encourage people NOT to get 1/100 HG lines.
Usually the 1/144 HG is cheaper, and more stable(because 1/100HG still use same polycaps to connect the joints, except parts are lot heavier).
For the main MS they will usually throw out a MG (I am pretty sure Strike freedom is going to get MG treatment since it's not that much from Freedom) after the 1/100 HG
Hell, for super popular MS like freedom, there might even be a PG after the flash 1/60.
One thing which makes me hate Bandai, they threw out the MG Wing zero custom about a year after the release of PG wing zero Custom. What pisses me more is that the MG has better wings than PG, those people from Bandai need to die in a fire.

I'm kinda new to this forum, been here for a while but never posted anything, and I just decided to get into gundam modelling. Ive already ordered a few from ebay, but they are mostly 1/144 NG models. Mainly because I didnt know the difference at first and I only saw painted versions...once i saw unpainted I was shocked. Some arent bad looking but others are terrible.
Now Ive decided to get a few higher grade ones so I will use the cheap ones to practice painting and making them look good.
So for starting out I am going to have:
NG:
1/144 Wing Zero
1/144 Sword Strike
1/144 Freedom
1/144 Chaos
I've also have a 1/144 HG Wing Zero Custom coming in and next week Im gonna pick up a 1/100 MG Wing Zero Ver. Ka and a 1/60 Freedom. Big steps I think, going from NG to MG, but I have nothing better to do with my time and the main thing I wanted from the start was a big ass Gundam model to put in my room.
For the Wing ver. Ka and 1/60 freedom I'm probably not gonna paint them for fear of ruining them but I hear they look good enough without paint anyway.

Poor guy. LOL
Hmm I dont think super glue is gona save you this time. It's not strong enough.
If you can post a SS what the polycap looks like(also the size, in METRIC), I might find an extra one..
Since I have hundreds of polycaps left over from the MG models, there could be one that's exactly the same.

A small update on my progress with my MG Zeta Gundam.
I've started painting the blue, red and yellow stuff, because thoes colors cover the primer color very good when using a normal paint brush. However, the white color posed more of a problem since white is a quite transparent color and sometimes really hard to paint. I'll airbrush thoes parts (probably starting tonight, haven't been able to since I haven't had a mask to protect my airways).
I've completed both shoulders and I'll start working on the arms, legs and torso as soon as I manage to airbrush the white parts.
It's really fun to see some progress on your work. Looking at primed frames of plastic isn't very fun. :P
I might start working on the Nu Gundam too sometime soon. I'm really aching to work on that one. I think it will turn out awsome with the color scheme I've thought of.
Oh yeah. I changed the quite dark blue on the Zeta Gundam to a much lighter, almost sea-blue'ish color, it looks really neat I think. :)
I might post up some pictures of what I've done so far. Going to try get a hold of a digital camera from my dads work tomorrow.
Update:
So, I tried the airbrush now. And I can only say wow. The result is so much cleaner and nicer. You get a much thinner and finer coat on the pieces, but the primer dosen't shine trough the color. Really nice.
I tried it out with a kind of gunmetal color which I am using for the black parts on the backpack on the Zeta Gundam. It turned out very good.
Tomorrow I'll try painting some white and stuff to see how that looks. :)
Update 2:
The airbrush is working just fine. Had some problems with the needle and the brush wouldn't change the spray size, eventhough I adjusted it. Anyway. I fixed the problem and mixed some paint. Blue, white and red. All prepared now so I can just sit down, put some paint in the airbrush and paint whatever part I need.
I also finished both of the shoulders after painting the parts today. Looking pretty good.
I painted the head too, and the result was good I suppose. :)
I'll try finishing both arms and the head tomorrow. I'll see if I have some sparetime. Anyway. Bed calls...

I heard they are going to release MG Zeta version 2 in Dec after the release of MG MK II version 2 in October.
For those of you who plan to purchase those gundams, I strongly recommend you wait for the second version, or you will cry out loud just like I do.
I have the first release of Gundam MKII, it's nothing compared to the second version. The second version not only has the most PG like leg design and moving armor, it also has a brand new torso with inner frame. For those drooling fans out there, here is a little spoiler, the pistons connect the feet and legs are chromed.
I heard the Zeta Ver 2 is going to have great posability and locking system prevent it from flipping around like the first one.

I took a look at the V.2 Zeta, but honestly, I think it looks like crap. It's nothing like the old model, or the actual gundam from the anime. They have made alot of small design changes that makes it look more like a gundam from Cosmic Era, than one from a Universal Century gundam.
So honestly, I don't know what's so good about it. I'm currently building my V.1 Zeta Gundam together, and I have encountered no flaws what so ever. If it's the stuff regarding the transformation, I couldn't care less. I didn't buy it for the Wavemaster Form, I bought it because it's one of the coolest gundams I know.
Anyway, a slight update on my progress.

Actually, I find it nice to relieve some stress by building my gundams. It's like all your problems disappear when you sit down and build a bit. But as you say, games sometimes get the better of me, WoW is one of them. :P
(But that's offtopic)
Think I'm going to order the Strike Freedom Flash Edition today, or some other models. Anyway. Going to start working on my Zeta Gundams legs today. Shouldn't be that hard since the parts are quite big, and generally, airbrushing bigger parts is alot easier because the paint gets spread out better and you use the same ammount of paint for a much larger piece.
Going to try have both legs ready for assembly tomorrow so I can start working on the torso during the week. :)

Dont bash v 2.0 because you own the first version. Besides, from the info leaked so far, I have to say we have little knowledge over the ver 2.0 Zeta.
I also have the first version of Zeta gundam. It's a great purchase (about 30 bux) for over 300 parts, and a light up LED fin. The transforming mecha is totally amazing without any replacement parts.
However the problems came up after I finished the model.
1. The weird design on hands is incredibly flimsy, it wont be able to hold a damn thing without modification (I replaced it with the hands from Strike which is relatively strong).
2. The connection between the wings and torso is loose. In MS form, the two wings part will keep rotating towards the lower center.
3. Stability in MA form which are complained a million times.
4. Terrible posibility. You can not bend the leg or move the arm what's so ever..
I am quite optimistic about the second version after I compared the gundam MKII version one and two, huge improvement I say. The mecha design on the second version is quite close to PG freedom and surpass most of the early PGs.
Flash version freedom looks like a piece of crap to me. 1/60 HG with light up parts.

That's what I'm saying.
Design wise, the arm is too short and skinny in ver 1.0. And again, terrible articulation ><! The sliding piece used to lock the legs behind the knee can get loose and the model wont be able to stand still w/o certain reinforcement.
In case you didnt notice, the ver 2.0 gundam mecha design are quite similiar to those of PG (RX-78 one year war version vs PG Rx-78, MK II ver 2.0 vs PG MK II). So I am looking forward to the release of zeta ver 2.0. Once I have both I can give away my old Gundam MK II and Zeta.
I recommend you hold back on the flash version of freedom. I am pretty sure its HG design with LED inside. I can understand most people go for it for the cool looks, but I prefer more parts and delicated inner skeleton. One big complain about the LED lights comes from the tormented experience when people intend to change the battery. Those batteries are expensive, hard to change, and dont last long. In fact, you can barely notice the difference between light on/off most of the time. Even in dark, the light is way too weak and makes the gundam looks sleepy ;)

Ok, I figured since it's christmas in a month, I should buy myself a gundam model or two. I got a couple in my mind right now. These are the ones I've been thinking off.
MG 1/100 Sazabi (8000Y + 5000Y shipping)
MG 1/100 Rick-Dom (4000Y + 1580Y shipping)
MG 1/100 Hyaku Shiki (4500Y + 1080Y shipping)
1/60 Strike Freedom "Lightning Edition" (9500Y + 5000Y shipping)
That's pretty much it.
Clearly, the Sazabi and Strike Freedom are not very economical models, since I'd get both a Rick-Dom and a Hyaku Shiki for one of them, maybe even a third model for the same price. But, the thing is, I want the Sazabi really bad because I have the Nu Gundam, and having the two rival gundams is more or less a must in my opinion.
The Strike Freedom is also very appealing because I simply love the design and it's currently my favourite gundam. And the thing is huge (standing over 50cm tall, and 60cm between the wings), which would make it very spectacular to look at when completed, compared to the 1/100 HG model. I don't really care that much about the lighting system in it, just the sheer awsomeness of the gundam.
The Dom's have always been a cool mobile suit, chubby and very cute in a way, and it dosen't look that bad either once completed, and it's quite affordable.
Same thing with the Hyaku Shiki. A gundam that I have also loved for quite some time, and again, very affordable.
Right now it's leaning towards the Sazabi, but at the same time, as my dad is also a fellow modeller, I'd like to give him a gundam as a chirstmas present, because he has been talking about buying one when I buy some more models from HLJ. But, obviously, my needs go before his (god I'm cruel :P). The Sazabi seems nice to build too since it's red, because I've had problems mixing a good white color that covers the primer well without getting dusty or grainy.
But, at the same time. I had the idea of buying the Strike Freedom and doing a sort of 'dark' version of it. Turn the white into a light gunmetal or gray color, with different shades of grey and black on the other darker parts. Then have a quite matt blue and red for the blue and red details (obviously).
Money isn't really a problem. I can buy each model by themself, or the Hyaku Shiki and Rick-Dom at the same time.
Need some feedback now from you guys here.

the GS version gets freedom, justice, and providence... thats for the 1/400 i think and the 1/144 HG mechanics get only a 1/144 freedom...
for the destiny version, it gets the s-f, I-J, and akatsuki

Haha. I guess that's true. :P
The Strike Freedom is cool, but very impractical at the same time because of it's size. While it may be awsome finished, I think it would be a pain in the ass to get it together because of it's sheer size.
Right now, it seems like the Sazabi is the right one for me. I'll probably wait with the Strike Freedom untill we have a 1/100 or 1/60 MG model of it, because Freedom has that, and I see no reason why Strike Freedom wouldn't get it. But honestly, I'm looking forward to a MG 1/100 Destiny more.
And I don't really feel like I need to get more models, because my Zeta has provided me with enough of experience, good or bad, which will come in handy when building my Nu. But, first things first, got to finish my Zeta.
But I got to stack up now with another model or so, so I can keep myself busy during christmas. :amuse

Make sure you get the One-Year-War Version Rickdom. Awesome design, independent joint fingers(Which is kinda rare on MG level). Older version of Hyaku Shiki has nice posability and the shinny look is really appealing.
Sazabi... It's big, bad-ass looking MS. However it doesnt take long to put it together. Overall it's not a very complicated model, I would prefer to compare it with GP02A, and you will know what I mean.

Thanks for the input.
I'm not really looking for a model that takes ages to complete, I'm looking for a model that is nice to build, and looks good, a criteria which the Sazabi cirtainly meets. The Nu Gundam isn't very hard to build either it seems, eventhough it has over 300 pieces. The pieces are quite big on it, not like the Zeta Gundam where it has taken me ages to do just the arms and legs. :P
Anyway, thanks White Reflection for the tip. :amuse
Chillin, have you digged into your Sazabi yet? If so, any comments about it?
Oh and regarding painting with a airbrush (I'm just a beginner right now). How do you mix the Humbrol colors? The color is supposed to have a milky consistence, which isn't very hard to do. But I've been having problems getting it right with white colors. It seems to have a tendency to get grainy and dusty, and I had to use sandpaper to smoothe the rough surface of the part I painted, then paint it another layer, which I so far haven't had to do with the other colors I've mixed myself (red and blue).
Oh well, dosen't really matter that much. Going to buy some real airbrush paint, Model Master paint, from a hobby store. I got a couple of thoes colors, one, a gunmetal color which looks totally awsome when you paint with it. Currently I'm using it for the joints and stuff on the Zeta, as well as the backpack on it.
I'm later going to use it on the Nu Gundams torso.
And listen, this is what I'm going to paint my Nu Gundam with...
Polished Aluminium, it will look awsome.

Actually they were positron cannons. :P
They were attached to the backpack that Akatsuki had down on earth. They just folded down below the arms. And it seems that the version we will get is the one with the DRAGOON backpack, not the other one.
Anyway.
I went out of town yesterday and stocked up on some Modelmaster paint (best paint there is for airbrushing, in my opinion). Anyway. I painted all of the parts for the legs so I can start putting together them later today I think. Was a real pain in the a** to paper down the primer to get a nice and clean look on all parts.
And I've decided now, I'll buy the 1/60 Strike Freedom Lightning Edition, and do my own 'Dark Strike Freedom' custom model out of it.
I'll place the order later today because I'm gonna go watch the latest Harry Potter movie (saw it last week too, but this time it's free through my dad's work).
But I really have to say, if you need airbrush paints, buy Modelmaster paints. They are excellent. May need some thinning though. But I've never seen a color that covers this well and when you paint with it, you never get too much paint.
Need to do some minor work on 2 or 3 of the bigger parts for the legs because some paint had stuck in the nozzle of the airbrush, and when I applied some pressure, it splattered a bit over the parts. Oh well, no big issue really.
Also, check out this custom model of Destiny. In my opinion, it looks fucking awsome. :amuse

Yeah, I thought it looked awsome too. Alot more, uhm... subtle, than the normal Destiny with it's very bright colors.
I painted my Zeta a kind of light sea blue or something. It looks pretty good I think. But again, my Zeta was only to practice my airbrushing and how it is to build a gundam, what you should do, and what you shouldn't do . I've learned that priming (at least when using Modelmaster colors) is pretty much unneccesary. For me, it has only added alot of extra work and a very bad result on some parts. But, at the same time, it can be a good idea if your paint contains alot of alcohol, where the parts might get damaged and deformed because of it.
Anyway. I painted another layer on all the parts for the legs now. Looks really good now that I'm using real airbrush paints, not the ones I mixed myself, which gave alot of different results (good or bad).
Going to put them together later tonight or tomorrow when they have dried properly. Besides, I need to remove some paint from different areas on the pieces, else the joints and stuff wont fit together.
I'll post some pictures up later today on what I've done so far. My brother borrowed a digital camera from school, so I guess I'll just borrow it.
Oh yeah, going to place my order now on the Strike Freedom. Hope it dosen't take as long as last time to get it when it got stuck in the customs for like two weeks. Pissed me off so much.
UPDATE: Here's some pictures of todays work.

Must... stay... calm... must... not... open...!
And I ordered my Strike Freedom Flash/Lightning Edition today. Now I just have to wait a month or so to get it.
UPDATE III:
Today I put together the whole Zeta. Now I just need to put together the backpack and then I'm finished. Should have it done tomorrow or by wednesday. Anyway. The Zeta turned out very good I think, despite it beeing the first model I build in a couple of years, and the first gundam model I've ever built.
I'll post up some pictures tomorrow of it.
Oh, and as a sidenote: GUNDAM PANEL LINE MARKERS SUCK ASS! (Using them to draw panel lines on flat/matt colors isn't nice...)

OK, I airbrushed all the parts for the backpack on the Zeta. I'll put it together today after school. I tried using another color I had, Magnesium instead of the Exhaust Metal I had used before on a couple of parts. I don't know what to say. It looks OK, but the surface became quite rough because of the primer (which I had sanded down...). Oh well, you arent supposed to look at these models trough a microscope, so it shouldn't matter that much.
I'll post some pictures of the result later today.

Alright...
Zeta Gundam Status: FINISHED!
At last, after like, a month, I finished my Zeta Gundam. Well, I got the two weapons left to build, and the shield. But that's it.
So, some comments about it.
Design: Look's like the Zeta Gundam, not much to complain about, some things could have been better, the backpack for example, which has a hard time staying in one place because of the bad connection between them and the actual gundam.
Builderfriendly: Yeah, I suppose. This is the first model I've built in a couple of years actually, and it was surprisingly easy to put together, despite having twice the amount of parts that a normal plastic model has.
Result: Could have been better I guess. But as I mentioned. The first model I've built in a couple of years, and the very first gundam model I've built. A couple of mistakes was made during building. Priming all the parts wouldn't have been needed because the molds were of high quality. And, probably the biggest mistake of all, using a grey Gundam Marker on a flat white color. Love how the paint absorbed the marker ink. Oh well, it wasn't that bad, but it didn't look nice. Gundam Marker is from now on a definate "NO!" when it comes to building gundam models.
And my 1/60 Strike Freedom Flash/Lightning Edition was shipped today. Hope it isn't as slow this time as the last.
I'll start digging into my Nu Gundam next week or something. Want to relax a while after finishing the Zeta.
EDIT:
PICTURE TIME!
Alright, here's some pictures of my finished Zeta Gundam. I have yet to put together the Hyper Mega Launcher, Beam Rifle and Shield, but I should have it done this weekend. Oh well, here's the pictures.

Size comparison with the Hyper Mega Launcher. The weapon is well over 30 centimeter, alot taller than the gundam itself. It's pretty impressive. Got to paint it tomorrow.

Random pose I did. The Zeta is quite un-poseable actually. You can't turn the legs or arms very much. The Nu seems alot better in that aspect, aswell as the Strike Freedom I'm getting in a couple of weeks.
Anyway, that concludes it for now.

Hope to get it in a couple of weeks...
No comment about my Zeta? Man, that's cold. :sad
Ah Fai: Great looking model. Really impressive. :amuse
I haven't added any panel lines on my Zeta because I painted it with matt colors, and using the markers (or any ink pen) on that isn't very good.
I started working on my Nu Gundam this afternoon. For some reason, it seems very easy to build compared to the Zeta (with it's quite complicated design). Going to paint some parts now after I've finished this post. The colors I'll use:
Semi-gloss Black for all the dark blue parts on it (torso, etc.)
Insignia Yellow for the 'horns' on the forehead and other details.
Aluminium for all the white parts (except the shoulders)
Polished Aluminium for the shoulders.
Exhaust Metal for the frame/skeleton in the gundam.
Gull Grey for a few parts on the frame/skeleton.
Yeah, that's pretty much it. You should see the aluminium color. Looks so nice. :amuse
And when I get the Strike Freedom, I'll start Operation Fallen Angel. :cool
UPDATE: Painted all the parts for both arms now. Nearly took me 2½ hours to airbrush that but it's well worth it in the end, gives you a great result. When I put it together it will look awsome.
But the funny thing with the airbrush is that it dosen't take very long to paint, but to clean it out properly and change the paints. That's where most of the time is spent.

Mindless would it help to spray a bit of future floor on your model to make it a bit glossier so you can add some panel lines? Or would you like to keep it matt. I personally think that it's not as beautifell as with panel lines. But great painting job :). to bad it doesn't pose that well...

Well, I haven't really intended to put any more work on the Zeta. I think it turned out really good taking in mind that I haven't built models in years, let a lone a gundam model.
I built it to see how it was to use a airbrush and to see what a gundam model was like to build.
But I have to agree, some panel lines would make a lot of difference on it.
And yes... the posing on it is just terrible. You can only bend the legs and stuff a bit, turn the arms up and down and left and right in the elbow joint. Not very poseable at all. A shame really. :sad
Anyway. A slight update on my Nu Gundam. I painted all the parts for both legs tonight (I painted the white parts last night) and it turned out really well. I lost some small part that was supposed to hide a screw on the leg, but it won't matter that much since you wont see it under the white parts that go on the legs. But still, it pissed me off.
I'll put together the legs tomorrow, and I'll try to post some pictures of how it looks. The arms turned out awsome. I'm almost amazed myself. :amuse

Any suggestion on the kind of paint used?
I hate trouble so I incline to use TAMIYA spray paint. With some practice I can achieve satisfied result on my Farrari Enzo model. What's the main strength and weakness when you compare spray paint to airbrush?
Also, for airbrush, do you have to wash everytime if you switch to a different color?
Last question, I have seen people using lots of method to get rid of the shinning layer on the model (prevent the surface from reflecting), whats the idea behind that?
I mean I really models with shinning surface ;)

I use Modelmaster paints (I believe Italeri makes them). They work really nice for me with the airbrush. Some may need some thinning though, but usually not more than a few drops of it. Tamaiya paints are great, and they are known for their quality when it comes to anything hobby related.
Main strenghts and weaknesses? I suppose the greatest strenght would be how easy they are to paint with. If you have thinned the paint just about enough, the color covers the surface you want really well, and you can adjust how much paint you want (if you have a double-action brush) which also is really nice. The weakness would be the cleaning I suppose. It takes time if you don't paint in the right order. Start with the brightest colors or the ones closer to white in their shade, then move over to the black/dark colors. Yesterday I used four different paints like that with only using a paper to wipe out the paint from the cup, and put a bit of thinner in there and spray to clean the nozzle. But yeah, cleaning is the disadvantage I suppose.
The other disadvantage would be the price you have to pay in order to use one effectively. My dad built a small air compressor using a compressor from an old refrigerator and a small tank, so it's really quiet, and can put out all the pressure you need to airbrush. But, if you don't have someone to put together a air compressor for you with parts you had since before or got from scrap things, it could cost you alot. I'd say a good compressor would cost you >$250, and then a double-action airbrush around $50 (I paid that for mine).
In the long run for a hobbyist, I suppose it's more cost effective with a airbrush. If you're not, I suppose it's not worth the money invested.
I've used some gloss and flat (half-matt, half-gloss) paints in the airbrush. I used some black paint to paint the feet on the Nu Gundam yesterday.
When you don't want a shining layer of paint, I'd say push the air trigger on the airbrush all the way down to get full airflow, and then use not so much paint, so you just cover it with a very, very thin layer. Then you cover it up with thin layers untill you get a solid coat of paint. May take some time, but for me it works really well. Also, with a red paint I have, I've been able to tone the glossiness down a bit just spraying a thin layer of paint some distance from the piece I'm painting. Wouldn't guarantee that this one works on all paints however.
Idea behind it? No idea. I don't really want my model to shine all that much, so I try to keep the paints as matt as I can, but generally for red parts (for example), I want them to be a bit glossy since that's how they are on the 'real' gundams.

I use conventional acrylic paint... i get it mixed in a paint store so i can get whatever color i want as long as i have a sample... the really big downside in using this is that it really needs lots of thinning (which can melt the plastic if you are not carefull)... and brushes are no good for them because they dry up fast...
well for me i think the airbrush is great... I started doing the legs of my deathscythe and they came out better than i expected... (considering that its my 1st airbrush job) you can really control the amount of paint you apply on the model... the only down side is the price... oh well... i think i kinda spent money on a very cheap one time use airbrush:P sprayed some thinner to clean it after use... unfortunately something happened and now its ruined...:sad though im now really convinced in spending money for a really good one...

Anyway, glad the parts you painted turned out good.
A slight update on my Nu Gundams progress. I put together the right leg as I got home from school, looks really sweet and it's really big. A thing that has been bothering me though is that I somehow managed to loose a part that is supposed to be in the knee-joint. It's supposed to be next to some cylinder there on the front of the knee, but yeah, I lost is. Can't remember if I lost it was when I took the parts back inside after painting or when I sat down to put it together. Oh well, going to try and make a new one, but in the worst case, I just have to skip the part. It dosen't show that much under the armor, but it still pisses me off. :mad
Hope I can find the part...

okay after 3 days of work on my deathscythe H, its finally finished:laugh yay!!! i kinda got lazy in picking colors so i just went black, pure white, and grey... then the old saviour red is used in the very minimal red parts... and sliver on the scythe, and some parts of the buster shield... i didn't follow some of the default paint patterns well because i got lazy... :laugh but it really turned out good... overall since this is my first 1/100, i guess its good... i got totally frustrated with the black spray paint that i used... it always comes off when i removed the masking tape i put to cover some parts for spraying... and as a result some parts were totally crappy especially if you look at it very close... i think this has been a very good practice for me in preparation for my next target... no it ain't blue frame yet... what i want next is MG FREEDOM!!! The MG Acguy owns people. If you like the Acguy definitely go pick it up. It has a problem looking menacing though, but who cares it's Acguy!
I just did so great for myself this holiday season. On Christmas I'm getting my models, those new Naruto games for GC and PS2, and a new iPod. I had to make up for a crappy holiday last year.
This pretty much means I own every Strike Freedom save that stupid 1/144 NG with me getting both the 1/60 Lightning and 1/144 HG. I want to recreate the final battle so I'm getting the other three Gundams (Destiny, I-J, and Legend) 1/144 HG as well. In addition to those I will be getting the ver. 2.0 MKII and Zeta. Gotta get something UC *shrugs*
Anyway enough about crap I'm getting. I see everyone has been pretty busy with the models. Maybe it's time we got things active again :amuse The 1/144 HG Akatsuki looks interesting, but what does everyone think of the recently announced MG Nemo? Sometimes I just wonder about their choices for MG models. I was skeptical of the ver. 2.0 MKII until I saw how big of a step up it was, but the Nemo? I can think of plenty of other mobile suits they can make money off of if adapted into the MG line that are far more popular and would sell far more. Sheesh, at least make a MG Strike Freedom and Force Impulse for Destiny. I would also like to see a F91 or Crossbone MG. I realized I did a lot of ranting. I apologize and I promise things will be a bit more on the positive side next time. It's just that I haven't really vented my frustrations in a bit over Gunpla/Bandai. I'll still feed 'em money regardless

You know, in Chinese we have a special term to describe Bandai. We call them "Jian Shan". Their goal is to take the last penny out of fan's pocket. They are more Jewish than the Jews. All they think about is making money and they are exetremely unethnical and nasty.
Start from animations, they do clipshows and flashbacks over the over in the story(4 in Seed D). Aside from that, there is a three minutes review at the begining of every single episode. If you cut the ripped off battle scenes and repeated scenes, I have to say there is only 14 minutes of new content in each episode. They spend 50 episodes to tell a wacky story which could have been done in like 30 episodes, yet they couldnt even provide us with a decent ending. It's rumored they are going to release a 40 mins OVA to make up the Seed D ending over Christmas.
Bandai is also lack of creativity in story elements and characters. We see ripped off UC scenes every where.
Gundam JacK: 0083, Zeta. Neo: Another Char wana be. Pilot a red MS
Requiem: God when there is a gundam, there is giant laser....
Episode 40 Seed D = Episode 38 in Seed... Orb is going to get owned again...
Akasuki ? That was a serious WTF going on when I saw it. If you ever watch Zeta, you know what I am talking about.
Zaku, Gouf, and Dom: Since when did gundam story become a zoo for endangered animals?
If above is not enough to prove my point, check out how Bandai extend their greed on models. There are like 15 versions of ancestor gundam, among which are eight different versions of MG (Rx-78, Rx-78 1.5, Ka, one year war, Char's red version, 20 years anniversary, transparent and FA). For every MS Char has piloted, there will always be a red coating version coming out some time after with slight improvements over the old one. Everytime they change the color it become a new suit. But Bandai is crafty, they always do some modifications. For instance, FAZZ and ZZ is 98% identical but Bandai didn't give the parts on the knee therefore FAZZ can not transform. They released the WZC MG roughly 3 years after the release of PG WZC, and they improved the main wings and allowed it to split. The die-hard fans who have purchased PG WZC have to spend 50 bux buying a new MG while cursing Bandai....

Imagine you buy a flash version of Strike freedom, and later Bandai release a PG version.
well it really depends on the person you will either buy or wait... for suits like S-F, it is expected to have a PG release... so if it was me, i'd wait for the MG or PG release... now there are collectors who just buy everything... now if i was to choose to buy the Flash version now, then i would know the risks in buying it... especially if i want higher quality models...
to make my explanation short, if you want to buy a model, as a consumer, you should be wise in choosing which to buy and which to wait for... modifications and improvements are always expected on later releases(which is common sense)...
anyway, changing the topic... i went to the mall today... and they have a model contest or something... and i saw a lot of customized gundams... entries this year are mostly HGs from SEED and Destiny... then there are some UC and other alternate universe gundams on display... what i really loved was the Uber Customized ZakuII. it had a lot of weapons and it looked more like something that can go up against GPO3 Denrobium:laugh another model that i loved was the custom paint job one guy did on the HG 1/100 Duel Assault Shroud... i actually did not recognize duel at first... then the AS armor just made it all familiar... it also had a lot of custom parts like leg rocket launchers from heavyarms...:P
too bad i did not have a camera that time:crying

Woot! It's Chillin. Good to have you posting again. :amuse
That wouldn't surprise me. I'm done being pissed off at them, because I know no matter how much I get pissed off I will still buy their products.
A MG Strike Freedom is to be expected, maybe even a PG, but I'm still willing to pay (Well, I already did... duh...) for a 1/60 'Flash Edition'. Finishing the Zeta gave me the knowledge I needed to learn what to do and so on. So now when working on the Nu, and seeing how nice it is turning out, I can't wait to buy more models.
So, as Chillin said, no matter how much they piss me off with releasing pointless models, I'll definately keep buying models from them.
Going to go downstairs now and finish cleaning up the parts, then airbrush the whole upper body and the head.
Update: OK, fist of all, I have to say this just to get it out of my head...
MY NU GUNDAM IS SO F*CKING SEXY!
...OK, calm!
I painted all the parts for the torso, head and waist and put it together. What can I say? It looks so good I can't even understand it myself. It's soooooo nice. I'll try to get hold of a good digital camera to take some pictures of it.
I thought painting all of it in aluminium would be overkill, but it turned out really, really nice. I painted the facemask in a Highly Polished Aluminium, it looks like chrome basically. It looks so sweet. Got to put the backpack together now and then the funnels and weapons.

I bet you are hungry for some Nu Gundam pictures?
I got a couple here, some with bad quality, some with good quality. I hope you like it.
Going to put together the rest of it later today.

Anyway.
Going to finish the backpack and weapons today. Then I'll try have the funnels done sometime this weekend. I tried putting one together just to see how they would look, and damn! Thoes things are huge! Look forward to it.

I like the aluminum color... If there is a way to chrome the parts, I want to know.
I can understand that there is going to be a PG/MG SF, but release a MG version of WZC after PG version? I mean come on, WTF?
Note: The bigger pair of wings on MG WZC can actually open up, the same counter part on PG version is ONE PIECE OF GIANT PLASTIC!!!

I like the aluminum color... If there is a way to chrome the parts, I want to know.
The paints I'm using that are from Alclad only make these kinds of metallic colors. I have one that comes very close to chrome and I used it on the facemask and did some masking on the rifle yesterday when I painted that.
Here is their homepage, with some pictures and stuff. You can also order paints from there, but beware, these paints are quite expensive, over $10 (where I live at least) for a bottle with like 40ml paint, and when airbrushing with them (you have to airbrush them) it takes quite alot of paint. I spent one whole bottle to paint all the aluminium on my Nu, and I still have the funnels left.
Anyway, here is the page.
Alclad Paints Homepage (http://www.alclad2.com/alclad-home.html)
On another note, I finished the whole gundam, weapons and all, but I still have the funnels left to paint, I'll do that today. So maybe you can look forward to some pictures of the complete thing tonight.
Ha-ri: Why not buy some other model? I could think of numerous cool models aside from the Red Frame which you already have. Myself, I see no real enjoyment in building the same model twice, unless you make it completely different.

Indd I don't know why to buy 2the same models, unless you want to create battlescenes :D. But still....
I would save money to get a model you really want. I still have to build my MG Strike, MG FReedom, HG 1/100 Red Frame, HG 1/100 zaku hein custom, but i have already sanded the parts of my 1/100 sword strike and blaster strike. Waited a long time for my airbrush te be alright. Now I still have to buy something, I hope I will have a model ready by the end of vacation of Christmas. Nowadays it is to much studying with the exams :)

And just a question. How many 100% do you think I improved from the Zeta to the Nu? In terms of painting, color-scheme, result and so on.
Anyway, hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I enjoyed building it. Now I just have to wait for my Strike Freedom. I can't wait to get started with it!
Oh yeah, listen to this. You know that piece I lost that was supposed to be in the left knee? When I started cleaning up around on the desk after I put the funnels together, I found it lying there. I couldn't help but laught.

The Nu just doesn't look as plastic as the Zeta :). And maybe it's me but the blue color of the Zeta isn't really a color for a badass gundam. It doesn't really shine the "I am all powerfull" color :). But enough with negative comments

Master Grade Chars Zaku and some MG variant blue Zaku...Fun to make but there tubby things gave me headaches keke.
MG Qubeley which is a really odd looking, but kinda cool one.
The other 2 are just a pair of High Grades...A dom and a...I think Gelgoog Marine variant? Dont really like them since they where really easy to make and look kinda cheap compared to the MG's and the PG heh.

well thanks for saying its good guys... well maybe the cam did not much detail from the model but when the active cloak is down you can notice that the paint was stripped of or something... i consumed a whole can of acrylic spray paint just to fix it... unfortunately it never worked... @PinoyAko
hmmm... it depends which grade you want to start. my guess is that your older models are from the wing and/or G gundam lines right? probably you would want to start off with the SEED/Destiny series gundams. they are a lot better compared to the wing and g models. probably you could start at HGs or if you have a lot of experience in painting, building, and etc, i recomend you get an MG. MG's like MG Freedom or the MG RX-78 ver1.5 which is by the way, just Php 1500 in Sta. Lucia Grand Mall in Cainta. or in Toy Kingdom in Megamall:P finally if you would want to buy some MG UC stuff, i recomend you go to greenhills. look for the shops hidden deep inside ShoppersVille. they don't really sell cheaper compared to ToyKingdom or anybody else, but that is the only place you can get Good UC MGs like MG Zeta ver2, or MG Gundam MkII. ver2, or PG Wing Zero Custom.:P

G'day
I used to be into kit building but after moving out and got the job other things took the priority and it was long time before I have some stability in my life to get back to this hobby... tongue.gif
well without much ado I'd like to start my very first posting with some of my Gundam kits... some old and some new...
This PG RX-78 took me about 5 week with working 1-2 hours every night except weekends from memory... It was long time ago though...
http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/926/p10507172dd.jpg
http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/2045/p10507161jj.jpg
If I ever going to build another PG I will do the complete skeleton weathering plus more subtle MAX style shading w/ probably more clean anime look...
Yes I know the shading is very heavy on this one but then it was at the time when I didn't know about MAX style shading...
Mk-II ver 2.0 below took me two solid days at weekends after I got hold of the kit from mate of mine who attempted to build but due to lack of time passed on to me... (Can't recall how long I spent on the full scratch 1/100 Guntank though)
http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/8301/p10506951hh.jpg
(that's the 1/100 full scratch built Guntank in front by the way)
And here's Gundam Custom ver Ka I did in Sentinel colour scheme w/ MAX style shading...
I personally think there's still too much of red bits but I'm generally happy with the result...(will need to experiment with the pressure next time I have some spare time). You can see Guntank with one side of caterpillar broken waiting for repair job... Sad
http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/599/p10506577ee.jpg
For Guntank it's pretty much full scratch build though the torso is based on MG GunCannon partially - i.e. shoulder, upper arm and waste inc. core block system. The lower part is basically a simple box w/ junk Tamiya military tank parts though the caterpillar I used was very fragile and it's pron to dislodge every time I handle the kit... sad.gif I need to do something about that... anyway it's been quite some time I built this one so my memory is bit hazy...
here's the another shot of Guntank...
http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/6821/p10506921tt.jpg
hope you enjoy...
[EDIT]
alright I took another shots of PG Mk-II and Zaku...
hope they are better then initial photos...
http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/9633/p10507287yy.jpg
http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/526/p10507290gg.jpg
Mk-II has the heaviest shading as it's the first one I tried back then...
Zaku is the last one hence the least amount of shading...

12-20-2005, 07:09 PM
I think thoes look really nice. The RX-78 had a tad bit too much of the shading, almost looks like it's scorched. :P

12-20-2005, 08:20 PM
thanks mate!
if I build another PG I'm going to do the subtle MAX style shading and full detailed skeleton plus weathering...
I'd love to put up a diorama but given PG size you will need to full scratch pretty much everything inc. figures... (don't think train sets/kits come in 1/72 scale or something close to 1/60?)
Ha-ri
12-21-2005, 04:29 AM
Sorry, but what is MAX style shading?
dj898
12-21-2005, 04:44 AM
it's type of shading where you start with the darkest colour and gradually paint the lighter colour on top - you will need to do air brushing - or something like that...
Mindless
12-21-2005, 11:23 AM
Close up that Ver.Ka Custom Gundam might look a bit too red, but I'm sure it looks great from a little distance, thats often the case with most gundam models. If you look really hard (at mine for example) you will see some parts where I have messed up with the markers a bit when I did panel lines, but it still looks good from a distance.
(Also noticed you post on the Fine Scale Modeller forums, I got the same name there as here. :P)
Anyway.
No Strike Freedom today, but then again, I wasn't really expecting it today. I'm pretty sure it will arrive next week though (hopefully...).

I got my Strike Freedom today and I can only say this:
OH MY ****ING GOD! EVERYONE SHOULD OWN ONE OF THESE!
No kidding. I've never seen such a nice gundam kit. We'll, I've just had three (the SF included), but still, it is soooooooooo nice.
Perfect molds, and everything seems to have exellent proportions to the gundam in the anime. I checked up on all the part runners so there were no damage and stuff and read through the manual a couple of times.
It seems to be a very challenging model to build because of the lighting inside, but I am confident in my skills.
And just as a sidenote, I decided to paint it in the original colors. I don't want to mess it up with something I'm not sure will look good.
I'll update with some pictures in a couple of days.

Well. I put together the Super DRAGOON wings on the Strike Freedom now, just to get an idea of how big they really are, and to put some putty on it to get rid of the ugly lines between the parts.
And I'll tell you, these wings are no joke. Without even folding them out, they make the Nu Gundam look puny in comparison, and the Nu Gundam is considered one of the biggest MG models that Bandai has released.
And if you fold them out... well, nothing really needs to be said. They are huge. Going to paint them later this afternoon. I hope I have enough paint. :amazed
UPDATE: Painted all the parts for the Super DRAGOON wings. I'll leave them to dry overnight to put them together tomorrow. You can also expect some pictures by then.
Also, a slight comment on the kit. While it's really cool and all and very nice molds, I have to say that the sheer size of the wings is a problem. Just painting the funnels took quite a while, and getting a good result on the wings?
*pfft*
I'll tell you, it was easier said than done. When I do post the pictures up tomorrow, don't be surprised if you see that some areas of the wings are rough or uneven. Painting parts that are 30cm+ is really hard.

well i have seen a built SF flash ed model... i just never knew that it would make an MG Nu look like nothing when it comes to size... XD well thats what you should expect from a 1/60 model... i think it would be normal for you once you start building more PGs and RDs 1/144s will look like chicken shit compared to 1/60s:laugh
@Hari
great job again on the impulse considering that you used a brush all the way... but i would recomend you doing more coats... some parts look like they lack 1-2 coats of paint... nevertheless good work...:)

Haha.
Actually, I have told myself never to build a perfect grade. In my opinion, it's just a waste of time and money. A kit that holds around 900 parts, which is three times the amount of that in the Nu Gundam (around 297 parts), would just take too long to build. When I go and airbrush something, I take anything from 5-20 parts at a time (which can take a couple of hours with cleaning included). Painting 900 parts would take far too long and use up far too much paint.
Sure, a PG looks awsome and all, but it's just not worth it. I'd much rather build the 1/100 MG and HG models.
Anyway. I'll post up some pictures tomorrow. Should have put together the upper body with the legs by then. Need to paint a few more parts (feet, some parts on the legs and torso).
Ha-ri:
If that was done with a brush I have to say it looks good. But I'd recommend you to use more coats of paint. Just paint a thin coat; leave it to dry overnight or something, and then another coat. You might even do some sanding on it between the coats to get away any roughness.
EDIT:
And I've been wondering on what to buy next. I'm thinking of buying all these and creating something similar to what Chillin has had in mind, the final battle.
1/144 HG Force Impulse Gundam
1/144 HG Infinite Justice Gundam
1/144 HG Strike Freedom Gundam
1/144 HG Legend Gundam
1/144 HG Destiny Gundam
1/144 HG Shiranui Akatsuki Gundam
That would land on a total of $86, which is about 700SEK, about the same I paid for my Strike Freedom (without shipping and customs fee). But, it's 6 model kits, that would keep me busy for months. :)
But, at the same time I've been thinking of buying the HG Destiny 1/100 and Strike Freedom, and doing a bit of a kitbash of thoes (exchange head, hands, wings, or something like that).
Help me choose. :cry

Good to have you back mate and thanks! :amuse
I've been aching to see how that Destiny and Strike Freedom (or was it just Destiny?) turned out, but you just disappeared. I hope to see some pictures soon.
An update on my Strike Freedom.
I went outside and did some masking/painting on the knees. The vent on the knee that is supposed to be gray with red inside it was molded into the knee piece, so I had to do some masking, which in my opinion turned out really well (taking in mind that it's like, my 4th time masking).
I also painted the blue for the feet and upper body. Expect some pictures later today or tomorrow of the gundam assembled, but not completely. I'm trying to build not too much at a time since I want the fun to last a while.
Anyway.
Any suggestions on which one of the above to buy? Six 1/144 HG models to recreate the final battle, or two 1/100 HG models to kitbash?
UPDATE:
Here's some pictures.

I guess you have a point there. Some parts on the gundams I've built so far have had no need to be painted.
But I have to say though. In order to get the best details, you should paint everything, and that includes parts that go under the body.

Yeah, the wings really are big, almost too big. I put together the legs and joined it together with the upper body and put on the wings. And I'll tell you, it had problems standing straight with all that weight on it's back.
And sorry to say it but I don't know how it compares to the MG Freedom, but my guess is that it's alot bigger. These wings are about 30cm (12 inches) long.
Anyway. Here's some pictures.

That's it for now. Gotta fix the stand and check if the lighting works throughout the whole body now. I know both the arms and legs work, but I wonder now that I connected them to the cables inside the body. I did it the other way. Put left on the right side, and the right on the left side.
Oh well. It's not that hard to take apart.

Ah icic, still cool. But one more question, were the wires difficult to install into the parts?
I can't say there was any problem with the installation of the light no. Just that some wires were alot longer than needed (especially in the lower body/groin area). The real problem was the wings. They were a real pain in the ass. Some very weak pins held a polycap in place and after painting the wings, and putting them on the backpack, these broke off and started rattling inside the wings.
Anyway.
I cut loose the last parts for the body and put it together loosely. I also finished the stand (which is the first thing you are supposed to do...) and put on the lights. I'll tell you, it really glows alot more than you think.
For some reason though, I couldn't find where to turn off the flash on the camera so the lighting doesn't really show that well.
I also put it next to the Nu Gundam for a little size comparison.
Here's the pictures.

Actually there are 2 1/60 grades. the PG (Perfect Grade) and the RD (Real Detail). PG is the most detailed kit you can get anywhere... its just like an MG but has MORE detailing especially in the inner frame. RD, on the other hand is just HG's blown up to 1/60 size. the difference though is that RDs usually get more gimmicks because of the size... the SF Lightning ed is an RD. now the PG strike and PG strike rouge is completely different from the RD strike... i just wanted to clear up something you said about 1/60 models..:P

The Lightning edition has excellent details on the outside, but on the inside they are very poor because of the trasparent/gold'ish frame.
And yes, I'll do panel lines, or at least try.
But I do agree with you. It's a completely different feel to the 1/60 kits than a 1/100 MG, and I have to say that a 1/100 MG is alot more enjoying to build and less trouble involved when building them. But I just bought the Strike Freedom because I thought it would be a cool model to have on the shelf. :)
Next up is probably a couple of MG's or HG's. I've been looking at trying some shading/damage on a model, and for that it would be ideal with a GM or something form a UC gundam anime.

Same here, and I kind of wonder too what a PG is like.
I guess it's like a sized up MG with three times as many parts as the MG kit for some extra detail. Sounds like a pain in the a** to me if you think about all the painting. :(

as we see, PG models have way way more parts compared to MGs. the good thing about PGs is that it was a very realistic internal frame and uhm a little bit more flexibility(and i mean just a little bit)... so right now i do agree with mindless that its a huge pain in the butt to paint and build, but considering that amount of detail, i would want at least one... Ha-ri: Well, the Meteor units are 1/400, so it's only natural that the gundams that come along are 1/400 too which means they are very small. Only a few centimeters.
(~18m = 1800cm / 400 = 3cm, you get the idea. In inches that would be just above 1 inch)
Don't know if that's how it is, but I think so. :S
darksage78: Yeah, that price tag is a bit hard to digest for me, especially when taking in mind that all my packages from HLJ (except one) has gone through the customs, adding another 25% of the item price on the package. I'd hate to do that on a 15000Y model kit that has around 6000Y shipping. It would cost me alot, so I'll stick to the MG's and maybe a RD now and then.
Problem with my panel lines though: I have painted my model. If i just added the panel lines without any paint on the parts, it would have been easy to correct any errors, but now... :cry

well there are two versions of meteor... the first one is the one mindless mentioned, the 1/400 which has 2 versions of its own, the original seed version and the GSD version... the difference between the 2 are obviously the MS mini models that come with it... for the original, it comes with freedom, justice, and providence. as for the new GSD version, it comes with S-F, I-J, and akatsuki. Now the other version of the meteor is the HG 1/144 which is insanely HUGE... i bet my balls that its larger than an MG and even a PG... :P the HG 1/144 comes with a 1/144 Freedom Gundam. unfortunately i do not know if its an HG or an NG.

I finished painting my Strike Freedom today. Well, the gundam itself. I still have the beamrifles and beamsabers left to paint.
I changed the color scheme a bit on it. I felt that the waist had too much white so I masked it off a bit and added some blue. Turned out really nice in my opinion. Going to take apart the shoulders tomorrow and add some blue there too. Should look really nice. :)

Yeah, you kind of do, at least when brushing indoors (your house).
I'm out in our garage so no one is really bothered by the fumes and I wear a respirator (gas mask) to protect myself from the fumes. The alternative would be building (or buying) a spray booth with fans that blow out the air from the box through a window or something. But that is even more money to spend than just getting a airbrush + compressor.

Yeah sure I will, btw how do you usually use them and do you mask?
Mindless
01-10-2006, 03:11 AM
How you use them? Uhm...
Well, obviously you have to connect it to a source with an even air flow, a compressor for example. Pressurised air canisters that are made for this type of thing works too, but generally compressors are alot better.
When it comes to painting/brushing with one, it's not really that hard. Just a bunch of things to remember when you are a beginner.
First of all, make sure what types of paints you can use with the airbrush. (Acrylics, enamels, laquers, water-based, etc.)
Thinning: Then you will have to thin the paints (to a milky consistence). Some paints may be pre-thinned, like Tamiya or Modelmaster paints, but many are not. For example, Enamel paints (Humbrol, etc.) are not thinned. In most cases, you can thin it at a 1:1 ratio (with Humbrols paints anyway), some paints may need less or more thinning though. If you don't thin properly the Airbrush will be a mess and you wont get that smooth coat of paint on the model that you want.
Painting: Then we have painting. It's not really that hard, you hold the airbrush pretty much the same way as you hold a normal brush, and move with it back and forth over the part. The thing to remember though is that you shouldn't stay with the airbrush at the same spot too long or paint will build up in a large, uhm... pool and you get a big 'splash' like mark. Not nice.
Anyway. You should experiment yourself and find out what suits you the best. Take some scrap model you have around to experiment on what angle and distance to hold the airbrush and how you should thin the paint. If you don't have a scrap model (I used an old bomber plane), a piece of paper should work fine, but I do believe trying it out on some kind of model is the best. I bought my Zeta Gundam to experiment with airbrushing and honestly, it looks terrible, but it provided me with some very useful knowledge about airbrushing.
Cleaning: Maybe the most important part. Unless you clean out the airbrush properly, paint will get stuck inside and dry up, and might damage the airbrush, or render it useless so you would have to buy a new one. Study the manual for the airbrush before you start out. Try taking the airbrush apart to see what it's like inside, what part does what and what goes where. When you got a good idea of that, taking it apart and cleaning it gets alot easier, trust me.
Airpressure is also important. If you have too much, it could damage the airbrush, too little and the paint wouldn't get spread out as well. A regulator (pressure regulator) between the airbrush and the compressor is a good idea to have.
I don't know if there is anything more than that to say. Feel free to ask for advice when you get going. :)

Well thanx alot, just one question sometime do you need to use paint brush along with the airbrush for any reason or effects?

Yeah, you can do some drybrushing effects and weathering effects with normal brushes that you can't do with the airbrush.
You don't need to use a brush for drybrushing/weathering if you don't want to. If you know where to apply it and have done drybrushing/weathering before, it might look nice though. But as I said, it's not needed (for the model to look nice, it only adds realism to it). :)

What paints I use? I use Modelmaster paints. They work great for me in my airbrush.

thanks, i usually use the small tamiya colours but sometimes it hard to get the right shade to fit the MS i'm painting and the boxed set colours that you can get are just not worth the money and they don't realy cover the models i have. also i'm thinking of starting a conversion from my red frame. i want th flich pack to fit onto the back of it! anyone else seen anything like this ?
http://www.gundamofficial.com/worlds/ce/mechanics/images/ms_astrayredflight_b.gif
its kinda of like pack from the m1 astray but has wings on the side of it.. but the problem is that the m1 is only in 1/144 scale so its going to be hard to ether scale it up or just a simple scratch build

well red frame's flight backpack is indeed the M1's backpack... the only major difference is the fuel tanks that look like wings... Red frame got the pack i think when he brought redframe to orb or something...
as for the backpack, the only option that i could think of is making one... currently there is no 1/100 astray so no backpack... but you can use your 1/144 to compare if you did it right... but do look for conversion/add-on kits that are made by b-club first... they can be as expenisve as a regular model kit(sometimes even more) but you do get high quality replicas for various models...

i've looked all over fo some kinda of addon kit, i know b club don't do any and as of yet i have't see anyone else actually try and convert a flight pack for red fram, the thing is that the model looks like it has a part of its back where the flight pack could of bee fitted but bandi must of never gone through with the plans for it... shame would of made a great addition to a great kit
ssouske
01-13-2006, 07:59 AM
i kinda agree that bandai should have made the backpack with the model... though i think the pack would make it heavier on the back plus it would constrict some movement from the arms thus disabling the "near MG" posability feature that everybody liked about it. well thats just my opinion though...

@ Hari
you should first do a practice kit first if you do not know how to use an airbrush... NG kits from wing, seed, and seed destiny make great practice kits
its always better to make mistakes while practicing...
Mindless
01-16-2006, 02:56 PM
Yeah, what ssouske said. Having a kit to practice on is the best start. I had a MG kit to practice on. But then again, I've built models since I was like 6 years old, so I had the basic idea of how everything worked when airbrushing. :P
But try to get hold of a kit to practice on. Dosen't have to be a gundam, just about any plasic model should do. I did some practice work on some plane wings since they are quite big and you can try alot of different stuff on them, painting patters, layer paints to give different effects and so on.
Just experiment a bit with it before you try it out for real and you should be fine. But having a kit which you practice airbrushing on would be ideal because you would spend at least 5-10 hours painting.

errrrr...0.o look at the instruction manual... it should atleast have one... but as for the basics, just like what mindless said before, thin down the paint to the correct consistency... then put it inside the paint resevior or whatever place you put in the paint in that brush, connect the hoses to your compressor or pressurised canister then pull the trigger... you need to play with some stuff to get the paint to come out but it should be written in the manual... well unless you bought a really cheapo airbrush like the one that i did :P where it really did not have any manuals or shit... fortunately for me, i had someone i could ask help from during that time... so just read the manual before someone else here says RTFM...:P :ffluv

I believe that's the first time I've heard someone compliment their own building. Prove it to me and I will believe it. :wink
Ha-ri: It's not really that hard. You have a trigger on the airbrush. If it's a single-action you can only push the trigger down to get air into it and blow paint out. If it's a double-action, you can push the trigger down and move it forward and backward to adjust how much paint you want to come out of it. They are not really that hard to use. Find a suitable part to try painting a bit on, grab your airbrush (which you've filled some paint in), keep the airbrush about 5-10 centimeters from the part you are spraying, and push the trigger. You'll probably be surprised at first, but trust me, it's nothing dangerous. Try getting a hang of 'shooting out the paint', then move over to doing some basic airbrushing. Moving the airbrush left/right or up/down over the part to give it a thin coat of paint should give you the hang of it quite fast. If you screw the paiting up, just try again, but honestly, I think you should be fine.

Know what's funny, I bought the exact same airbrush a couple of weeks back. :laugh
But I have yet to try it. I do have a manual... in Swedish... Though, I guess I could translate it for you. If you want to, I could rig it up today and test it out and come back with some information that might be useful.
But first of all, I'll explain how it works.
http://img458.imageshack.us/img458/7553/apowerlarge2598942618ld.jpg
1.
Connect 1. to the airbrush.
2.
Connect 2. to the compressor / pressure regulator. (so you can get the right air pressure when airbrushing)
3.
Fill the cup, 3., with paint. (just try with some thinner first to see how it works, it dosen't make the airbrush dirty, and alot easier to clean up even if you should make a mess) Connect 3. to the airbrush, like in the picture.
Then you set the right air pressure using the regulator on the compressor (or the air canister) to the right pressure. That's usually between 15 and 30 PSI (punds per square inch) or 1.5-2 Bar. You see the thing that goes like down from the bottle into the nozzle, inside there is the needle. You can turn the outside of that clockwise or counter-clockwise to feed the airbrush more or less paint. Then it's just over to point 4.
4. PULL THE TRIGGER! I DARE YOU!
And that's pretty much it. If you're not too sure yourself, I'm sure your dad or some other family member (that is more into technical things) would love to help you.
Anyway. I'll get back later tonight with some information once I've tried it myself. If you're still unsure, just wait untill I come back with some information that may be of use. :)
EDIT: Ok, that went alot faster than expected. The airbrush was even more simple than I first thought. You hardly need to clean it. Anyway. To some more detailed info.
You thin the paint as you are supposed to do, 1:1 (paint:thinner) should work
just fine. Then you fill it in the cup, connect the cup to the airbrush and adjust the thing I mentioned above (by turning it). You can look how much paintflow you will have by looking inside the nozzle while you turn it. Try experimenting a bit with just some thinner inside the airbrush before putting paint in it.
<try painting>
The first thing I realized was that it's alot different from a double-action airbrush because you get alot more paint out of it, good for painting big things. Anyway. Over to the cleaning. The cleaning was really simple. Blow out any remaining paint from the airbrush. Fill the cup with a bit of thinner, blow it out some more. Fill again some thinner, and blow it out again. Doing that, you should have cleaned out most of the paint. But, just in case, you might have to take it apart to clean it up more carefully.
Done.
It's really simple. Even if you have never handled a airbrush, I think it shouldn't be that hard.

Projects? Well, I'm fixing up the new hobbyroom with a spraybooth and some things in the basement so I don't have to run between the garage and house all the time I'm going to paint something.
As I mentioned earlier, I ordered two models, a Kaempfer and a Gelgoog. They should both be arriving this week. :)
