Ok guys! This is the first tutorial for this forum, ever!
*NOTE: THIS IS ONLY APPLICABLE ON ADOBE PHOTOSHOP 5.0-CS2. IF YOU APPLY THIS TO ANY OTHER ART PROGRAM YOU WILL BE VERY VERY CONFUSED.
Disclaimer; I 100% made this tutorial, but it can be distributed beyond these forums. Just put my name on it and I'll be happy
This tutorial shows you how to create scanlines, a type of design that helps you make a graphic more interesting. It's used a lot in the graphic design world, and pretty popular I think.
I created this tutorial to be very throrough, so even Photoshop newbies can understand. It may seem slow to Photoshop natives, but I tried to make things as clear as possible. If you have questions though, feel free to pm me.
Tutorial consists of 2 parts: How to make a scanline pattern, and how to apply it.
Here we go! I created pictures if you learn by vision.
HOW TO CREATE A SCANLINE PATTERN
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v391/weirdmonkeyness/1Tut1.jpg
The first thing to do is to create a new image to work on. Press File > New on the top. A box will pop out asking you what size you want it to be. If the box says inches, percent, etc. change it to pixels because that's how small you want it. Put three for three pixels, and remember to press the transparent option on the bottom.

The second step is to ZOOM IN AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. If you want to kill your eyes, you can use the 100% view Photoshop gives you, but most people like to preserve their eyes. If you have one of those scroll mouse thingies scroll down as much as possible. If not, go to the left gray bar with all the little images, and press the little magnifying glass and click to zoom in. You should get the result above.

Ok now we have to get the brushes used to make the pattern you use for scanlines. Go to the left side bar with the icons and click the brush icon highlighted in the image. Drag to the right and two options should pop up, Brush or Pencil. Click pencil and you will get a little dot in a box with a down arrow on it. Click the down arrow to see the other sizes of brushes you can use, click the smallest one available. *Note: It is important to use pencil because brush is not as solid and it will spread to other pixels in the image.

So now for the pattern making part! I did a diagonal scanline for this tutorial, but later you can improvise and make it horizantal and vertical. Using the brush (square with plus sign in image) make three squares diagonallly in the image.

Press Edit > Define Pattern. This is important because it will add the pattern you just created to anything using the Paintbucket Tool.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v391/weirdmonkeyness/6Tut1.jpg
Click the Paintbucket tool in the left gray bar with icons, highlighted in the image. Go to the top right part and it should say Foreground. Change it to Pattern and a little image should replace the blank one you had before. That is not your pattern, so click the little down button next to the little image, and scroll down to find your pattern. It should look like what it was when you were done with it. VOILA! YOU'VE CREATE A PATTERN!!!!!!! CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Next part, I'll show you how to apply it. I hope you learned something in this tut! pm if you have questions or need to point out mistakes in this post.
Thanks for viewing my tutorial! ^_^
