View Full Version : Jazz anyone?
guys i havent met anyone who worships jazz in the forum yet, which is wrong TERRIBLY wrong! use this thread to talk about all the greats lousi armstrong, miles davis, trane, mingus, dolphy and dave burbeck, and my personal goddess Norah jones. Tlak about your fav tracks and such. you all now the drill :) .
Personally my fav (and first) jazz track which defines the whole genre for me is dave burbeck's Take ive. that song is such a masterpiece. what do you think?

Does it have to be strictly 100% pure jazz or is it also allowed to post blended streams? Cauz in that case I like to mention the jazzmattaz series of Guru (from Gang Starr) It's jazz blended with hiphop :)
Oh and I almost forgot to mention US3 - Cantaloop. It's still one of the best blended songs out there imo.
Btw besides Norah Jones another female artist mede her debut: Katie Melua (Crawling up a hill). Never heard of her before but what a beautiful voice. Very impressive song. Seems that there are a lot of young artist who are making music with jazz influences.
wlecome on board fanime, as long as there jazz in it, its all good, oh yeah and ive heard Katie Melua and she does have one hella of a voice!

Miles Davis' kind of blue is a classic - I also like Bitches Brew though. And Dave Brubeck is very good as well. Weather Report - "I Sing the Body Electric" (jazz fusion) is GREAT!
Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Jelly Roll Morton Charlie Mingus and Thelonius Monk....! I could go on. It's not my favorite genre, but the tops of the genre are quite entertaining and inspirational.
wow im glad there are so many jazz fans around :)

Ah! Jazz, I have listened to jazz since I was 5, my dad turned on the
radio station to 95.5 Smooth Jazz so I could listen, or he buys cds
of the most famous jazz singers.
Now, my favorite is soul jazz, a development of hard bop and blues.
Developed in the late 1950s and most popular during the early 1970s,
I listened to soul jazz more than any other. I love to listen to Ramsey
Lewis's The In Crowd, perhaps the best known soul jazz, sung back in
1965. I used to listen to the Ramsey Lewis Trio, with Eldee Young and
Isaac Holt, but once they were replaced, bahh, their music wasn't as
good anymore.
Soul Jazz organists I listen to incude Bill Doggett, Richard Holmes, and
Jimmy Smith. Soul Jazz saxophonists I listen to include Gene Ammons,
Houston Person, Eddie Harris, Eddie Davis, Lou Donaldson, and Stanley
Turrentine. I also listen to whoever they perform with.
Yeah, I listen to Norah Jones once in a while, when my dad listens to
her. I like First Sessions, Come Away With Me, and Feels Like Home.
Miles Davis III pretty much rules. I have listened to the albums Birth
of the Cool, Miles Ahead, Milestones, and especially Kind of Blue.
Satchmo was great. My dad has many of his hit records, Stardust,
Hello Dolly (It actually knocked the Beatles out of the #1 spot in the
top tracks for a while, that is what my dad told me), What a
Wonderful World, you name it. Dave Brubeck is ok, me and my dad
don't like him too much. In Your Own Sweet Way and The Duke are
my favorites. Pick Up Sticks, Unsqaure Dance, and Blue Rondo A La
Turk are ok.
How do I know these names? Well, my father taught me all about them,
and he could write a 5 page essay on every one of them. Yes, my
father's favorite music is soul jazz as well. For other jazz artists, he
knows stuff a lot of fans don't know, and he doesn't tell me. Yikes,
that's 48 years of jazz information in my dads head. :)
Fathers are a wonderful thing arent they?, my father also introduced me to jazz along with rock, and i will never be able to repay him for that.
Glad to see there are many jazz enthusiast on board the froums, i repped you all :amuse

Actually, that was sited from "Westside Story". Ha. But yeah, I'm a drummer. I play jazz. Well, actually, jazz, funk, swing, smooth jazz, bebop, and a little latin, but mainly fusion jazz. If you had to compare my style to someone, it would be John Blackwell Jr. or Dave Weckl. My set's still under construction, well, my Pearl (I have three drumsets: A Yamaha DP jazz config 4 piece, a Roland V-Drums Stage 5-piece, and My love, the Pearl). My project is currently a Pearl 2005 model ELX-Export Select 5-piece in a fusion config (10",12",and 14" mounted toms, 22" bass, and 14" snare) in an amber fade with black hardware. I'm getting an 8" mounted tom and a 16" mounted tom in same everything for my b-day (feb 12). I have all Sabian cymbals. Right now they are ProSonix 18" China, ProSonix 20" Ride, ProSonix 16" Crash, ProSonix 14" Hats, AA 16" Thin Crash, and B8 10" Splash. I'm going to get a 16" ProSonix China, 8" ProSonix Splash, replace the B8 with a ProSonix 10", and replace the AA with a 14" ProSonix Crash. All my hardware is Pearl minus a straight cymbal stand, hi-hat stand, and snare stand. I'm gonna change that. Heads will be Remo Pinstripe on tom tops with Remo clear Emperor on bottom, Remo Emperor coated on snare top, clear on bottom, Remo Powerstroke 4 on bass front (hitting side) and Pearl Black ProTone on resonant side. Sorry if I bored you, but I had to get out how magnificent it will be.

Wow Moe we've got the same taste on music. I grew up on jazz hearing it through the wall while my brother play jazz on trumpet preparing for concerts with his band. I love jazz Miles Davies, Natalie Cole, Pat Metheny, Ravi Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Bobby McFerrin, Chick Corea, Chet Baker, Diana Krall, Stan Getz, Keith Jarret,Gill Evans (although i do know only some records of them). Have you ever heard about polish jazz? Leszek Mozdzer, Adam Pieronczyk, Jaroslaw Smietana, Tomasz Stanko? If you want some just tell me, it's a matter of ripping some cds' so it's not hard to do. ive been exposed to a lot of Glenn Miller Orchestra. i used to listen to this cassette tape with tons of awesome songs. it was one of those things were you never wanted to skip a track cuz all of them were so good. wish i could remember some of the songs though. a classic that ya just cant forget: In The Mood.
BlueCheese
12-06-2005, 07:52 PM
I know I normally reccomend Hip Hop but I've been really in the mood for Jazz lately. I have to admit though that my knowledge on Jazz is shamefully somewhat lacking. But when I was listening to the radio with my dad a while ago, this song was played and we have both loved it ever since. So much so that we imported the entire album from Japan.
Anyway the song is called Symphonic Poem "Watarase". The song Watarase originally is just piano playing from Fumio Itabashi, however in this live recording we have folk singer Yuki Kaneko's powerful vocals and the Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra. I have listened to this song countless times over the last month or so and I just don't get tired of it.
I'm not really good at describing things so I guess I'm just gonna have to tell you to trust me on this one and listen to it. As per usual, anyone that wants it just has to ask.

I can bet you my left arm the band they mentioned is Digdable Planets. Which is a real shame, because their style jazzified hiphop still sounds as good as it was back in the day.
If you dont mind obscurity, try some free form or avant grade jazz. Off the top of my head I reccomend
Eric Dolphy - Out To Lunch
Pharoah Sander - Karma
Sam River - Contours
Yusef Lateef - Eastern Sounds
Cecil Taylor - The World of Cecil Taylor
Andrew Hill - Point of Departure and Black Fire
Grachan Moncur III - Evolution
Jaki Byard - The Jaki Byard Experience
Charles Mingus - The Black Saint And Sinner LAdy

Jazz is one genre I have made no progress into. Well not no progress, I do like Madeleine Peyroux but that's not very 'out there' type jazz.
I took Miles Davis' Kind of Blue out of my college library and didn't enjoy it...I think I should have just sat and listened to it intensely to try and accustom myself with the jazz sound (as I've mainly listened to Rock music all my life) but I didn't. I may take it out again over the weekend.
Tell a lie, I do like The Mahavishnu Orchestra, but they aren't straight up jazz.

I'm practically dead on talking jazz.. But my jazz god has become John Zorn because of his work with Patton and cloon's pimpage of Naked City.
Have you heard John Coltrane - My Fav. things? A cover of Louis Armstrong, and I dare to say it puts Louiy to shame. I'm actually grooving to that track right now, want me to up it for you? It's as sweet as they come.

I have that one :smile-big
yeah, the good ol' mixtape :amuse. But you're misin a few tracks from the record. Everytime We Say Goodbye and Summertime are total love.
It's amazing how jazz musicians are. Almost all of the have a gigantic catalouge and most of their work is flawless. Coltrane went from smooth jazz ( I use that erm loosley) to some really (REALLY) psychadellic and obscure work, most notebaly in Interstellar Space, which is quite a hard pill to swallow from how obsucre it is. I';m in love with Ella Fitzgerald. I really am. She's so talented. And Miles Davis, man. Michael Brecker. There are so many good jazz musicians out there. I got a new CD today from class. I'll pimp you all when I get home.
I seriously think jazz is awesome. You should ask ol' Sunny for Goran Kafjes. I'll even get that to you. It was good. Moe also gave me Yeseterday's New Quintet I think it was, and Madlib, which are also crazy good.

Now, the million dollar question?
How can you pick one definite John Coltrane Recording? I'm trying to introduce my friend to him, but I'm having the hardest of time making up my mind. Should I give her Giant Steps, A Love Supreme, Bluetrane or Lush Life?
I really want to burn Interstellar though , just to fuck her mind up XD
That being said, I've just uploaded Giant Steps if anyone is missing it

Either Blue Train or Giant Steps. Maybe Blue Train just because it came before GS?

Bluetrane for sure.
That's just the perfect intro.
I started her with blue train, now my entire coltrane collection is with her
So much love for musically inclined gals <3
In other news, I'm trying to start making a loose list for the seminal jazz series with colin (I started with 129 records, now I'm at 45. This is what I came up with for now
Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil
(^ you know how everyone says Kind of Blue is the definite jazz recording ? Well, I take that back. This is the 2nd coming of Kind of Blue, but eons better)
Jack McDuff - Brother Jack McDuff Live!
Oliver Nelson - The blues and Abstract Truth
Charles Mingus - Black Saint & The Sinner Lady / Mingus Minugs Minugs
John Handy - Recorded Live At The Monterey Jazz Festival
John Coltrane - Lush Life / Coltrane Live at Birdland
Andrew Hill - Black Fire / Point Of Departure
Art Blakey - Moanin' / Free For All
Yusef Lateef - Eastern Sounds
Ornette Coleman - The Change Of the Century
Eric Dolphy - Out To Lunch/ (but becuase it's way too insane for many, I might go with) Far Cry
Grant Green - Idil Moments
Superslient - 6
Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out
Duke Ellington - Money Jungle / Masterpieces by Ellington
Charlie Parker - Jazz At Massey Hall
Jaki Byard - The Jaki Byard Experience
Bob James - One
Pharoah Sanders - Karma
Lou Donaldson - Blues Walk
Miles Davis - In A Silent Way
Hank Mobly - Soul Station
Rahsaan Roland Kirk - The Inflated Tear
Herbie Hancock - Empyrean Isles / Maiden Voyage
Freddie Hubbard - Straight Life
Thelinious Monk - Monk's Dream
Brian Evans' Trio - Sunday at the Village Vanguard
Cecil Taylor - World of Cecil Taylor
Bill Evans - Waltz For Debby
Jimmy Smith - Root Down
Mycoy Tyner - The Real McCoy
Rahsaan Roland Kirk - Bright Moments
(^ this is INSANE. and you thoguh Out To Lunch was nutty? think again)
Jaga Jazzist - What We Must
Nils Petter Molvær - Solid Ether
Dexter Gordon - Go
Wayne Shorter - Juju
Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington - The Great Reunion
(^ ten times better than Togther for The First time, and that record was perfect)
Weather Report - Heavy Weather
Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus
Art Ensemble of Chicago - Sirius Calling
Man this is going to be painful. I gues the best way to go about it is to pick one record from each subgenre to make the 10 record list.

i do like jazz, but recently i've been really into a lot of free-form jazz. namely a lot of john zorn and naked city, and also some 'jazzcore' stuff. i've always been a fan of up-tempo jazz, like bebop, Estradasphere are really cool, check out the song Bounty Hunter by them.

i'm not a huge jazz fan, i just like listening to it from time to time, and i like how cowboy bebop used jazz in thier anime. Right now, the only jazz music i'm listening to is by John Caltrane. I hope Jazz becomes more popular than it is now. Maybe the sounds will become more vivid than what Jazz has to offer. The bass for example :-)

Hell yes! Dont you ttink Money Jungle is over ratted though? It's ace, no doubt about that, but I find his tribute to the late great composer/arranger Billy Strayhorn (whome Duke collaborated with extinsivly) ...and His Mother Called Him Bill to be the dukes most passinate, broken hearted and solid work to date. It hits a spot for me, the same way John Coltrane's Lush Life does. It' might not capture either at their peak, but the amount of passion enwrapped within it is godly.
Fav. Wyston record? And were you as happy as I was when they used his track for the new Ipod ad? My respect for apple tripled with that.
Luis Armstrong is the best:wink
Aye ;). Have you heard his collab with Elita Fitzerald? Easily ranks on my top 10 jazz collabs of all time.

Just listening to some of my stuff...anyone ever hear...Maynard Fergurson on Gospel John? Those are some high notes...
I cant recall any of Maynards work really =[
In other merry news, I've found my copy of Chick Corea's Return to Forever! There is much joy in moe land at the moment. Oneof my most fv. Avant grade jazz fusion records of all time.
Corea's career shot through the roof when he worked with Miles Davi's 3rd quntent on In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew. Bitches Brew was the essintail recording in jazz IMO, becuase al the session musicians from that quartet went on to create the 70's top jazz fusion bands. I mean, Zawinul and Shorter started Weather Report, McLaughlin formed THE Mahavishnu Orchestra, Hancockwent and created Headhunters, Chick Corea went o nto form Return to Forever
Thank you, Miles Davis <3
EDIT: lol, I know see what forky meant we he said that jazz fans come off as extreme elitisits, even when they dont mean it.
I like jazz, especially the piano solos. ^^
Then I'll be sure to pass Charles Mingus - Mingus Plays Piano (The only record where Mingus played the piano solo from start to finish. Remarkable effort by a man who was hailed by all simply as a bass god.) your way ^.^ along with some Duke Ellington and Bill Evans - A Portrait Of Jazz .
o0oEnderIlleso0o

Listening to Wayne Shorter's "Ju Ju" NON-stop.
Now that is fucking ace.
How can you go wrong with a man who was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, the Miles Davis Quintet and The Weather Report? Speak No Evil and JuJu were 2 of the greatest thing ever to happen to jazz. Espically Speak No Evil. Aside form the fact Wayne's quartet was one of the finest of all tiem, it takes off right where Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue stopped, expanded on it and took it to places Miles couldnt at the time.
o0oEnderIlleso0o
02-09-2006, 12:23 AM
moe you are a god. The influence of Shorter is undeniable in those groups. I would give both kidneys to see those four work together. I agree with your comment on Kind of Blue. Especially on this album were his writing seems lighter than his previous work.
Holy fuck. I just got my copy of John Coltrane - Expression; his last studio record before his death 4 month later, and it's bloody brilliant. I never heard Coltrane playing with such intensity in my entire life

I never really went deep into jazz. I don't know really why. What got me, to recongize jazz, was probably Cowboy Bebop. The Cowboy bebop was superb and I liked some of the jazz style work and influence it had in it.
kuchi, how about I forward you that mellow jazz link?
Colin and I plan to do a top ten seminal jazz recordings of all time soon. Be sure to check it out. Till then, I will perodically upload a jazz record for you every once and a while ^.^
And yes, Cowboy Bebop was indeed grand. Yoko Kanno is a fantastic composer and her work on the OST really covered a huge portion of jazz and it's various sub genres. It really is a fun way to get into jazz really.
interesting thread. I only know a few blues but I want to ge tmore in the genre, plus I'm doing my junior graduation project on Jazz and I need to know more about it
Oh that's wonderful! What area of jazz are you focusing on? Or is it simply an overview of jazz in general?
I'm going to upload John Coltrane - Giant Steps for you in a bit. One of Coltrane's early period jazz records and agood intro to his material. Plus he manages to make a fanatastic balance between his later free form work and traditional jazz sounds

I've never really listened that much into straight jazz but I am and always have been a smooth jazz enthusiast.
Nelson Rangell
Boney James
Kim Waters
Chieli Minucci
Walter Beasley
Marcus Miller
That's a decent list of what I normally listen to, but there are a few others, depends on the song.
Anybody else here more in my boat?
?Im beginning to think that Eric Dolphy - At The Live Spot Vol. 1 & 2 is the greatest live jazz recording of all time. Booker Little trumpet + Eric's clarinet is an insanily powerful and humble combo. I love how their solos tug at each other like two brothers who share a mutual profound respect, yet try to out do the other sibiling when everthe oppurtiunity arises.
Like Someone In Love perfectly reflects someone in love.

Yeah bass on jazz would be soo pimp...Although I always wanted what it would be like drumming for a jazz piece..I bet it would be great
Drumers tend to have the hardest time really. Between every single instrument trying to solo and improvisingall at once, drummers must remain extremely sharp to keep everything under control and give it a sense of balance.
MY fav drummer has to be Anthony Williams from Eric Dolphy's Quartet in Out To Lunch. and Art Balkey. Art Balkey and the Jazz messengers own.

Wow, Soil & The Pimp Sessions was so sweet! The back and forth between sax and trumpet was superb. Drumming was sharp as a knife and though it feelt improveised, it still managed to maintain a great deal of control melody wise. Ace mate, if you have more by the artist, do share!

I'm a musical dry man. I float around looking for good music. I need to be enlightened. I know nothing yet except everything. What I'm saying is educate me. :wtf I love virtually all types of music.

Ahhh it must be because it has Japanese characters and you guys don't have Japanese language pack installed. I can't see why it wouldn't play though... I'll rename the files and upload again. It's ripped from a cd imported from Japan.
BlueCheese

Right well I uploaded it again after redoing all the track titles and stuff so there is no japanese in there. I'm not gonna send it round for a third time, so if anyone wants the new link just ask here or PM me or something.

Ahhh yeahhh.. Diana Krall... US3.. I like infusional style too.. acid and smooth jazzes.
*melts* Thank you for this thread. No, you aren't the only one who likes Jazz.
And for the record, due to a younger brother of one of the band members in 311 being a huge Jazz nerd, there are several 311 songs that you might like as well.
8:16am and Lose off Grassroots is two of their unknown wonderfuls. That band is terribly eclectic.
