guys i havent met anyone who worships jazz in the forum yet, which is wrong TERRIBLY wrong! use this thread to talk about all the greats lousi armstrong, miles davis, trane, mingus, dolphy and dave burbeck, and my personal goddess Norah jones. Tlak about your fav tracks and such. you all now the drill :) .
Personally my fav (and first) jazz track which defines the whole genre for me is dave burbeck's Take ive. that song is such a masterpiece. what do you think?
I saw him play live a year or two ago. I have to say, it was a wonderful expirience. It got me to go out and purchase a lot of his music.
Speaking of which, I was looking in on getting a new record player. Anyone have suggestions/presonal prefferance as to what kind I should get?

No, unforunantely I don't, nor do I know who to get one. Sorry ^^;;
Now if anyone has any Eric Dolphy, send that my way.
and yes, thread needs Dolphy. Dolphy is fuck asweeome, not enough love.
Hehe. Yesterday managed to get my Hands on Vintage Dolphy which is just a colelction of live songs. Only got the chance to listen to one thoguh so waiting to see how the rest of it pans out
And Yusef too X3
you gotta spin the following
Out There
Out to Lunch
At the Five Spot, Vol. 1
At the Five Spot, Vol. 2
Softly, As in a mornign Sunrise
Far Cry
Iron Man
Stockholm Sessions
Out To Lunch & AtFS Vol.1 are his best works. such a shame he passed away so young =/
I tried to find Iron Man and Out to Lunch actually but that was the only one I could find.
I did inadvertently come across links to Coltrane's Ascension and Blakeys Moanin in the process of trying to do so which I had not been able to find previously, so wasn't completely worthless
haha. let me know what you think after you spun Ascension, kay? So far you've been more modal jazz, cant wait to hear your thoughs when you absorb hiss first "well, fuck it." record
he's afro-beat. :sag
have you spun any king Juju tuens pekep? try Juju music for size
lol thought he was considered afrobeat/jazz . seen him several times in the jazz category.
edit: he's actually in the jazz collection my dad has and i am quite certain I read about him on some jazz page a while ago.
he is, but i can let a md elitist moment pass ungrasped :zaru
he's more jazz fusion really i supose. but who cares. he's fuckawesome. Water no get enemey is the greatest tune ever, possibly
BlueCheese

It's put in jazz by people who have never heard of afrobeat. Or because most shops don't have an afrobeat section and have to put him somewhere.
haha. let me know what you think after you spun Ascension, kay? So far you've been more modal jazz, cant wait to hear your thoughs when you absorb hiss first "well, fuck it." record
Haha. Well of the 3 Trane records I have, 2 of them are post-ascension Kulu se Mama and First Meditations so know what you mean about the whole free "fuck this" Jazz.
FM was actually my first non-Blakey record having listened to three of em. Imagine that xD.
And I think I'm more of a post-bop kinda guy :LOS
Edit: I had been meaning to pimp Kulu Se Mama for ages but hadn't got round to it and only remembered to now XD

The beauty of jazz is that it's really hard to find actually bad stuff, and also it's pretty much timeless, so just look for a few of the names posted in the thread and branch out from there. Last.fm and stuff like that are pretty good if you wanna expand your range of artists.
^ what Rep sai.d the cool thing about jazz is the fact that, the guys who started it (we're talking from the 20s thru 70s here) were such a tight knit that they popped in each other's sessions all the freaking time. you'd have the Charles Mingus quartet jamming at Atlantic Studios for example, and Max Roach would just happen to be around and joins in. and bam; new record.
even the most hardcore jazz collectors never have enough time to collect these sessions and records. And the hing about jazz is the moment you're into it, you're hooked. you'll turn into a jazz freak not just getting the "essential" records, but searching for special appearances and jam sessions. it's gorgeous.
Im currently enjoying this very awesome euro jazz troupe. Ambient/jazz and my my what a charmer it is. def gonna pimp it when i can, ill be sure to link you guys.
FYI; Miles still blows.

I like fusion the most, tbh. Right now I've really been digging Hadrien Feraud, a little bit of Jaco, Allan Holdsworth, John McLaughlin, Bob James, some Stanley Jordan, Gary Husband's piano stuff, Paul Jackson Jr., and even some smooth jazz like Al Jarreau.
I also dig some of the older stuff, and I especially loved Dianne Reeve's soundtrack of Good Night and Good Luck. But, I like fusion/smooth jazz a lot more than old school, as it really does put images of cities and romance into my head.
Fuck, jazz is amazing.

BlueCheese

I don't think it's a matter of technique, I'm sure she is very gifted. Ahmad Jamal considered her good enough to mentor. She has done some nice stuff and I haven't listened to all her albums but yeah, what I have heard I was a bit surprised that there was such a big fuss about her.

You should def check out her stuff, but since we're on Jazz at the moment I'll point you towards Dance of the Infidel. Sent it around ages ago but don't think I can help you with the link since it was that long ago.
I found a link and bookmarked it.
Shall be downloaded once I'm done with NHOP.
Please tell me more about bassists.
Or should I make a thread to get a better response?

Recommending two of my favourite contemporary Jazz artist's who I've had the pleasure of seeing live.
Portico Quartet & Jose James are both great, definitely check them out.

Jose James is realy awesome, laidback music. I love it. If you have more lik that, tell me :D
Purely going on "awesome, laidback" jazz -- I'd recommend trying some Bill Evans.

Milano, from Live at Montreux Vol. 3. Been meaning to pimp it actually so could uplaod it if you'd like. Moe also sent round Sunday at the Village Vanguard which was great too.
But I don't actually have any albums on my PC by other Jazz vocalists really, I'd welcome some rec's too actually

no my opinion is more right than you :hmpf
i can see people placing The last concert or Nefertiti, The Beautiful One Has Come ahead of it, or even Out To Lunch, but that mingus album hits all the right chords with me, and is perfection in it's pursuit.
That reminds me, have you heard Cecil Taylor's Nefertiti, The Beautiful One Has Come yet Alex? You'll love this baby
I haven't.
As for The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady, I much prefer Pharaoh Sanders Karma over it. The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady is too low key for me.

Charles mingus - The black saint and sinner lady
my vote for the greatest jazz album of all time, pimped it, if you do dl bump the thread
I'm going to have to agree with you here :nod
It used to be Coltrane's A Love Supreme before I discovered Mingus.

Anyone here heard Eldar? I really admire his skills, and I love his chord progressions. He's rather like Oscar Peterson, who I like too. :iria

Bossa nova in general is a very good genre for calm music. (It's sort of a kind of a Portuguese take on jazz.) Antonio Carlos Jobim is, of course, the best, but some of his compatriots are quite good too. There's some more modern remakes of classic songs and new artists, too.

Take Five is an amazing song which I was fortunate enough to see played live by Brubeck himself a couple years back.
Lately I've been listening to some Eddie Harris. For those not framiliar with his work I recomend Listen Here, it's an awesome tune which has also been covered in a more fusion oriented version by Gene Harris (No relation:wink).

Eldar is a pretty good pianist, very talented from a musical skill standpoint, and I like some of his covers. And he was what, 15 when his first album came out? Rediculous.

Listened to A Love Supreme the other day and It is still a complete masterpiece. I miss playing and listening to jazz, the tunes were always really fun to play. And Improvising to a really fast swing or bebop tune is amazing... Ahhh good times:pleased

Jazz is a good genre, relaxing and calm. Out of jazz musicians, I like Miles Davis. His 'Kind of Blue' album is the only 50's album I ever listen to lol.
