View Full Version : Speed of light Vs Speed of thought.

I've always been curious which was faster ?.
We all know that the speed of light is 300000000 meters per second. But Im kind of confused about what the speed of thought is.
Some of my friends say that the speed of thought is the speed of electricity. But lets say that you move at light speed and I move at thought speed and we have a race to pluto. It would take you a few seconds to get there. But I think the speed of thought might be faster because as soon as i get the thought to go to pluto, I'll get there before you.
So my question is, which speed if t faster ?.
PS: Im so sorry if this thread or this post sounds retarded. Gomen, but its just a question so it wouldn't hurt right ?.

well i dont know the details but speed of light is faster i pretty sure, ask endless mike or CBG they should know.!

Not faster than light to my knowledge. Touch a hot plate and you will find out, it can sometimes take a while to grasp whats happening our body is less than 200km which light can travel in a second.
I will make the guess and say light is faster.

Electrical impulses in the body travel at around 100 meters/second, I remember learning that in my biology class.

@ gunners. thats really speed of neurons for the sense touch
the speed of light is physically a speed barrier that cannot be broken, though speed of thought hardly has a good physical representation. though, by just thinking about the words to use as i type this post, the speed of light is definately faster, as the light from my laptop screen has been constantly filling my eyes as opposed to my thought not generally running that quickly.

The way you word your post, the speed you are talking about (which isn't a physical speed, as others are alluding to), is basically instant.
Therefore, in this case, speed of thought can sometimes be faster. However, in short distances, light would kick your ass.

i agree i believe it depends on the person thinking and the distance traveled.

whoops, misread the first post :sweat
given what you define what thought its, what CMX said

The speed of light in a vacum is EXACTLY 2.99792458 x 10^8 m/s

If we are talking "Can you get to Pluto before I think it?", then Speed of Thought wins (Unless we are talking someone like the Racer or KC Flash or Zoom or something).
If we are talking "I'll outmanevuer a guy by just thinking about it" against a guy who has lightspeed capabilities (Which I think is what this is directed at), then lightspeed is far beyond it. I mean, you might be able to appear somewhere, but you are still limited to the speed of thought, and a person moving at the speed of light will pound your skull out before you can try to capitalize on the situation.
Is that what you are talking about?

well you see just because you think of being somewhere does not mean tat your thoughts will take you there un an instant. yes you may be able to imagine yourself in a location but that is all it is, imagination. speed of light is definitely faster, considering that the impulse from the brain only travels at a measly 100 m/s where as light can go an amazing speed of 3.0 * 10^8 m/s in a vaccuum, which would take approximately 5 hours 18 minutes, and give or take some seconds to reach pluto. what you are thinking of though is not the speed of thought it is simply instantaneous arrival at a location simply by thinking about it and one last note these calculations were fun any other physics questions?

Yea i battle this question all the time. I guess my question is does somebody that can move at light speed also think at light speed?

Most of them can, or else they would just crash into things.

it is said that the flash can thinks faster than he runs, and at one time he could exceed c (he was probably retconned though)

In DC 1 Million he used his superspeed to think faster than Solaris, who was a solar supercomputer from the 853rd century.

Got that out of my Physics with Calculus book actually. :P

Yep, and since light travles at 299,792,458 metres per second it wins this one. However, I may think that I am standing at the Sun right now, and therefore be before the light, which takes 4 minutes. Trickey question ^^ Depends on definiton really.

Except you're not really standing in the sun.

It would be horrible if thoughts were faster than light because then they would also be faster than sound and we would always hear a loud BANG if we start to think...

Except you're not really standing in the sun. Yes. Therefore defintion: I might think that I do something faster than light since there are few limits to imagination, but when it comes to actual moment (including brain nevrons) light allways wins. And according to Einstein it should win against anything, thus being the maximum speed. However that is a whole other debate :)
