What's the saddest anime, ova, or anime movie you've ever watched?

Mine would have to be Grave Of The Fireflies. (Hotaru no Haka)
Director Isao Takahata is defenitely a Studio Ghibli master.
It's a very painful and touching movie during the end of WWII. :sad
Seita and Setsuko, both characters rule. :)

Rurouni

Out of my list, Saiyuki. The pasts of each of the characters are full of angst....And the Kenshin OVA too..

The Rurouni Kenshin OVA.
Something about accidently slashing your true love almost clean in half that tugs on your heart.

i'd have to say both kenshin ova's (past+future)
also, if you think about it, the latter half of trigun was very depressing until the end, as well as the latter half of evangelion where evereybody lost their will to live, fight, and emotional connections. end of eva was also pretty depressing if you think about the meaning and not the pretty pictures.

Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien - I love these well done dramatic animes. I hated the ending though, the guy was an ass with his decision

Kenshin OVA1&2 - The scenes were great, i felt it for kenshin

FMA - Definitely had some scenes that were sad and in some ways messed up.

Naruto - Some scenes were so..how could i say this? I connected with some of Naruto's feelings. >.<

Probably some others i cant remember.

Grave of the Fireflies and Chrno Crusade are the saddest I've watched. Tsukihime also had a pretty sad ending. In fact, I hated it when they sort of teased you in the end making you think that everything is going to be okay and then WHAM! Those who've watched it will know what I'm talking about.

Saw "Grave of Firefly" in Japanese History class the other day, everybody had red eyes by the end of the movie, including the professor. Then today we were discussing it in class, professor almost cried again, because he has a son and daughter almost the same age...

Some story of FMA is really sad, like that girl get turned into chimera by his dad, and pretty much all the last whole bunch episodes when all sh*t hit the fan... so to speak.

Some stories of Planets are very emotional.

There's one episode in new batman/superman on cartoon network called "Growing Pains", don't know if this counts.

Peacemaker, the couple episodes about that ninja dude's sister :(

Evangelion when Misato dies

the Rah Xephon episode where Asahina dies

Full Metal Alchemist

ahvent seen Samurai X yet but I'm sure once I do it'll top my list =P

um....some episodes of Gundam SEED, RahXephon and Full Metal Panic
yes..FMP...the one episode where the soldiers sacrifice themselves to save Sousuke and they all die ....I think it was in a flashback episode...they werei n the desert... and they kept dying.. and lastly the girl captain lady died...then the ending music played. That made it real sad to me haha

Gundam SEED when people died..and all the emotional talk between Cagalli and Athrun

RahXephon when he killed his friend cuz his friend was one of the monsters and he didn't know it and she wrote stuff like taht was touching but I cant remember what it was now :notrust
and he found her dead with blue blood everywhere :sad

Hmm...I haven't seen Grave of Fireflies, but I knew looking at that case that it was going to be a tearjerker, lol. I'd have to say all of the Kenshin OVA's (why were they all so damn sad? Thank God they weren't cannon...well, the first one was >.>), and Chrno Crusade. I actually cried at the end of Chrno Crusade (wow I'm glad I'll never meet any of you people, lol).

Grave of the Fireflies is kind of a gimme. One of the saddests anime movies out there. I cried and wasn't ashamed of it. Warned my little cousin that he'd cry too. He didn't but he was very very depressed the rest of the night. It one of those movies that you never wanna see again cause its so good at what it does.

Wolf's Rain was definitely sad at the end. Killing off Character after character as the story climax. Tobawia!

But the first anime that ever made me cry was actually Scryed. I think it was episode 23 or 24 where one of the main female characters kills herself to save the man she loved. It got to me seeing Ryouho, the guy she saved, cry like that. It wasn't just a "boohoo *sob *sob; *tears" cry or "fall to my knees, crying in my hand" cries. It was one of those gut renching, total breakdown cries that you see Old Asian ladies have when their husband die.

Gunparade March had some sad moments and Gundam SEED definitely was sad.

Grave of the Fireflies is really sad.

Saikano OUGHT to be said but for some reason it never touched me that way. With one exception.

KGNE has a happy-ish ending but is very sad in the middle.

Now and Then, Here and There is extremely sad.

I'd chalk Chrno Crusade (I still maintain it ought to be Chrono, it's pronounced that way) up as sad, even though I never really cried. I was too annoyed at various aspects of it.

I feel the need to bang my head against a wall whenver someone mentions Grave of the Fireflies in one of these threads. I didn't feel much emotion from watching it even though the biggest bastards I know (excluding myself) cried watching it. The main characters got on my nerves. Peh.

I nominate Air the Movie. Sadder than the anime, IMO.

What is the saddest death episode you have seen in all of anime? It counts if at the time you think the character dies but dosnt really. Only say one if you cried during the episode at least once.

I cried every time i have seen the Naruto episode where Zabuza and Haku died. Last time was the 5th and i cried more than ever.

Dont let your male pride interfere with your post, i am a man and i have no problem with it, be honest crying feels good.

I cry a lot in anime.

* final episode of Cowboy Bebop where Julia dies (Spike is kind of inevitable after that)
* the end of the Cowboy Bebop movie where Vincent dies
* Zabuza and Haku, of course
* 3rd Hokage dying in the fight vs. Orochimaru
* The Sailor Soldiers and Tuxedo Kamen dying in the final episodes of Sailormoon
* Saphir's death in Sailormoon R
* Sailor Leadcrow's death by black hole in Sailor Stars
* Pretty much all the Sailor Soldiers dying in the final episodes of Sailor Stars, particularly Uranus and Neptune
* Vegeta killing himself to beat Buu (and then it turned out to be futile) - this is the only time I cried in DBZ because he did it believing he wouldn't come back.
* Treize Khushrenada's death in Gundam Wing
* Stellar Loussier's death in Gundam Seed Destiny (her character reminded me a lot of an ex-girlfriend)
* Shizuka Tsuzaki's apparent death in Jinki:Extend
* Hell, I cried when the robot Banpei broke down in one ep of Ah My Goddess!

Wolfwood from Trigon.

Also the entire last 3 episodes of X, particularly the ending.

you guys seem to be forgetting a lot.

chrno crusade: When Chrno and Rosette die on their porch bench after watching the sunset together. This was extremely sad.

Air TV/Movie: When Kanna dies while being shot full of arrows in the midst of flight. When Misuzu dies after "crossing the finish line" to get to her "mother" which was really her aunt.

Da Capo Season 1: Robot Miharu stopping and Yoriko's Cat going back to the way it was.

Grave of the Fireflies: His sister dies. This anime is too tragic to comment on.

Ima, Sokoni Iru Boku(Now and then, here and there): When Boo and Soon get shot and die in that terrible scene at Zari Bars. When Sis dies in the prison with Sara there. When Nabuca dies after giving Shuu his wooden stick back. When Lala Ru disappears.

Kanon: When Makoto dies(again) and disappears after finding that little angel keychain. A lot of people around the net have been saying this was very emotional and hailing it the next KGNE but i didnt think so.

Saikano: Wow. Everyone dies. Everyone. Cept for the two main characters. Akemi dies in bed with Shuji holding her after she had confessed her love and coughed up blood. When Atsushi dies in the war after he enlisted because he wanted to protect Akemi and be her boyfriend. When Testu dies after getting ambushed and shot to death while thinking of his wife in a house that looked a lot like his in his hometown. Take dies in that infamous air raid on Sapporo, still holding that pendant that he wanted to give to Yukari. Yukari, getting shot by the foreign soldier after screaming Take's name in revenge(very emotional). :sad

Shingetsutan Tsukihime: When Arcueid dies at the school in the end.

I would have to say Chouji, Wolfwood,
Where everyone except Kei died in Gantz, you know where that 8-armed thing totally slaughtered whoever was left in the buddhist temple.
In GTO where Onizuka got put in the coma thing in the manga series.
I just think it was sad in Cowboy Bebop with Spike and in the OVA with Kenshin, but still a great.
Oh and by the way Pikachu isn't dead because the show is still going on in Japan right now...

People, spoiler tags are useless in this thread. Every post in here is going to be a spoiler anyway. If people don't want to be spoiled, they wouldn't have clicked on this thread. At least, you can indicate the name of the anime. Like this-

About half the main cast got wiped out in this one. Michio's death was probably the worst, because I honestly believed he would keep his promise to Yumiko.

When Mitsuki discovered that Eichi had been dead all along. I honestly didn't expect it at all. It was the only time I ever cried reading a manga. The anime version was tragic too, but not as much as the manga.

Mibuya's death was completely unexpected. I wanted her to be a love interest for Takigawa. Guess it just didn't happen.

Sasame's death had me bawling. He came back to life, though. A part of me wishes he didn't. The emotional impact of a character death is severely undermined when he/she comes back to life. Revivals just shouldn't happen.

It's pretty difficult to get me to care about a character's death beyond saying, "Damn, that sucks!" in an anime, but...

Wolfwood's death in the anime really got to me because 1) He was my favorite character and 2) If he hadn't tried to follow the same code of ethics as Vash he wouldn't have had to die. Though I hear he didn't die in the manga...

Spike and Lisa(more because of the effect her death had on Spike). Damn, that show really is the best ever. R.I.P. space cowboy...

Roy Fokker's death was the first time I ever saw a hero die in an animated show...my nine year old mind couldn't comprehend that good guys actually can die.

Neji, Chouji, and Sandaime. Alright, so Neji and Chouji didn't really die, but they seemed dead and that got a bigger reaction most true deaths of supporting cast members in other shows.

Wow, can't believe I forgot that one. I also remeber beeing like 8 or 9 years old watching that. God I was sad. His final words was something like: "Say goodbye to <person x> from me..." *robot goes boom*

I can't believe no one haven't mention...

Nami's Mom...:crying ...if you have seen the original episode instead of that dubbed crap 4kids showed, you'll be crying too!! CURSE 4KIDS FOR SCREWING UP HER DEATH!!

You know they were going to die from beginning but...that fact doesn't help at all when seeing the brother's and the sister's slow painful progression towards thier fate.

Their ship, "Going Merry", will be damaged beyond repair and get abandoned by One Piece crew...

That wasn't what happened when he died.
Roy died when he was in Claudia's room while she was fixing a drink(or dinner, it was something like that) for him and he keels over with blood showing on his side.
I still remember watching the original run of Robotech/Macross back on USA Network(around 85 or 86, I think) and being quite shocked that they actually showed a main character dying.

The three top anime deaths (from what I've seen, at least)

3) From "Naruto"
Zabuza - okay, it shouldn't be a spoiler on this forum (LOL) but dang, it was so sad to see him dying there, beside Haku as snow began to fall. "He will go to the same place as Haku!" :crying

2) From "Trigun"
Wolfwood - who'd you think I'd say? Wolfwood's whole life, he starts regretting... He shows mercy to his old master... And he dies after dragging that giant cross with him! :crying He didn't want to die, after having changed... And that sad song that was playing made it so depressing.

1) From "Last Exile"
Dio - aw man... my favorite character in the whole series! His ending is so utterly tragic, I can't stand it! :crying He had practically lost his soul and heart when taken by the Guild... so sad! And then, Lucciola does all that is in his power to get Dio out of there, and ends up dying for it! :crying But Dio has lost his lifelong friend... and he completely breaks down... It was just so sad how he thought he was racing Claus again, and then looks back to see Lucciola's not there... And then he thinks that Lucciola died because he told him to jump out! :crying He died miserably! The show had to torture the guy to the bitter end!! :crying

I was sad when the TV died(so i thought) at brave little toaster, when they leave the house...

And also, Captain Harlock..

Those refugees they had from a planet that were the last of their kind, and they were all men, so they opened a hatch door and got sucked in space in order to help the ship escape a strange nebula.

And that blue colored captain, harlock's enemy I think. They duel with their ships, harlock wins, and then blue-captain self-destructs his ship and provides some kind of shield to harlock's ship to escape the other blue-people ships that were about to attack him.

And all that with Albinoni - Adagio playing (nice choice there for the anime). Too much for 7 year old me.

I wasn't crying but i was emotionally disturbed by the ending of evangelion Asuka committed suicide in the tub Alot was up with the ending of evangelion they even made a dvd with an alternate ending so more than just me had to be disturbed by that by disturbed i do mean saddened/shook not just sad cause it wasn't a cry but things were just going bad for those guys towards teh end.

I was saddened by haku's scene [dont think it needs a spoiler it's naruto] that one i cried, or came close but evangelions i just got seriously shook on.

I've watched a lot of that kinda shit and the only times ive ever come out of an episode depressed were in naruto when haku and Zabuza died, when Rosette dies at the end of Chrno Crusade, when Gyobei dies in Samurai 7, the end of Elfen Lied, and when I thought rei deid in evangelion.

then only time I've really choked up druing a scene was during hueghes funural in Full Metal Alchemist, that scene is just so well done, and it contains one of the best tearjeakers of any anime which is when Mustang says "It's beginning to rain" and starts to cry
*sniff* so sad

Not sure which is my favourite. I'll list some of my favourites instead. :)

Probably the piece of anime that has brought me closest to tears. The most depressing part for me would be the Kenshin / Sano part, not the end where both Kenshin and Kaoru died. Actually seeing a character as mentally strong as Sano being brought close to tears as he saw how weak and near death Kenshin had become... ;_;

Think this one is highest on most FMA fans list; highest in the best episode and saddest episode polls. It took me completely by surprise... I didn't expect one of the favourite characters to be killed off. Seeing his funeral... >.<

Such a beautiful episode... One of the most sad endings I've seen. I don't think anything else could've drove the series fans to tears as much as Chrno and Rosette dying together. It seems Aion had the last laugh though, being as he somehow was alive at the very end.

Would be one of my all time favourite episodes if Chouji had died. Would've made for the most touching death scene that I've seen in an anime. The tear-jerking way he could've died proptecting his friends... Damn Kishimoto!

Fantastic end for a fantastic series. I always knew the old Harry hadn't died; the Harry who missed the days he was just a punk in some small gang. Touching how Harry broke down and begged for the forgiveness of Brandon, after Brandon had said that that basically he would've sided with Harry back when Harry killed him, if he'd gave him the chance to make the choice.

Yu-Gi-Oh! DM, when Yami died in the end after losing to Yugi. Such a sad ending. Almost moved to tears since it's my favorite anime...It was also sad for the fact that his friends started crying when he had to go to ****.

Scanning through this thread all the anime that have been tear jerkers for me have already been said like:
hughes death in fma... and when his daughter asks if he is coming back at his grave, also with mustang crying and the music that whole episode got me so emotional

when haku dies and naruto gives that speech that changes the heart of zabuzza

Technically i no chougi and neji did not die, but the way they fought and how they fought to the end, also the rock lee fight with gaara, rock lee's flashbacks and in the end when he stands up to fight even when he loses consciencness

last exile how alex row dies

kenshin ova: betrayel when kenshin who is emotionally destroyed and is fighting all those assasins and in the end when he is about to die tomoe grabs that dudes knife dies to save kenshin

Let's see... my choices for the "saddest death" are...

When Mu La Flaga shields the Archangel from Dominion's Lohengrinn using the Strike Gundam. It was sad because I liked Mu as a pilot more than Kira. The Strike Gundam's "death" was even sadder. :(

When Nina Tucker was "alchemized" by her father Shou, and got killed by Scar. I kinda felt Ed's grief because of her loss. And I also agree with what most people said here regarding Maes Hughes' death - yes, it was sad. I liked his character, that's why.

FMA is a must!! when hughes died and his daughter asking why daddy is laying in the coffin or else he cant work and having mustang say "its beginning to rain". I CRIED MYSELF A RIVER! nina from the beginning of the series. when ed gets stabbed by envy.

naruto! it is the forum of course, haku and zabuza. when itachi slaughters his whole clan just to obtain the perfect sharingan. when gaara's only important person to him tries to kill him (THAT WAS THE SADDEST IN ALL OF NARUTO)im surprised nobody mentioned that

pokemon when ash freed his butterfree

lets see. if i had to pick THE saddest anime death it was the "father and daughter" reunion at the end of elfen lied...... i mean i dont cry for anything, and i cried for that! Elfen lieds ending is sick, which makes it my favorite anime of all time.

Fafner dead aggressor also rocks, plenty of self sacrafice and drama. Also, cool fights

Mai-Hime eps 16 - 24 were good, could have been so awesome...... but then the happy ending fcked everything.

As you can see i am THE drama monger. Death and emotion are what make an anime good. Animation runs second to that in my mind. None the less, these anime have the saddest deaths.

Gundam Wing:When Quatre and Treize died. Also when I thought that Zechs died. ;_;

Naruto: Haku, Zabuza, and Sarutobi's death.

Outlaw Star:Yes, I know how much most people hate this series, but Harry made up for it in my mind. So naturally I was sad when he died.

And that's all the deaths I can think of that I cried for, or at least felt very depressed. Although it seems like there should be more...

* Saphir's death in Sailormoon R
* Shizuka Tsuzaki's apparent death in Jinki:Extend
* Hell, I cried when the robot Banpei broke down in one ep of Ah My Goddess!

Well. In Saint Seiya When Ikki gave his life up to take down Shaka. Came close to tears,

and "In The Land Before Time", the first one when little foot mom got killed by Sharp Tooth. I cried. (ok give me a break on this one I was like 5 or 6)
How about when Shiryu dies to defeat Shura,or Hyoga and his master Camus both dies. But the bronze knights revived by Athena and the gold ones turn into specters at the Hades part of the manga!I WOULD LIKE THAT THIS STUPID RAT FROM THAT STUPID ANIME DIES!

I can't believe no one mentioned Berserk at all.

A lot of main characters get killed off during the eclipse, but Judeau is the absolute worst. He starts carrying Caska off, and nearly gets his right arm bitten off. Then after he's hurled off of his horse and nearly whipped to death, he gets stabbed. And then he dies as Caska tries to carry him off, and by that point he couldn't even speak to tell her that he had always loved her.

He was the coolest member of the Band after Guts. Hands down. At least he got a fitting end.

Mai-Hime: Although, not a really permanent death, it was sad watching Mai lose Tate and his brother.

In Chrno Crusade

when Chrno and Rossette Christopher dies at the end sitting on a bench in the country holding hands and smiling

In Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien

when Takayuki was trying to meet up with Haruka but when he get there he found out she was hit by a car and this makes you think she was dead.

In Shingetsutan Tsukihime

when Arcueid is killed at the end and Shiki is looking out the window of his school late in the day and Arcueid visits him as a vision.

Mai hime: they all start losing someone important. A recent event in Mai Otome was very sad as well.
Cowboy bebop: the ending.
Air: this along with the bridge scene in Naruto was probably the closest I ever got to shedding tears. The end was just heartbreaking.
Hikaru no go: Sai disappearing.

Yeah. Well, I've never actually seen the anime, but assuming it's a good conversion of the manga, then it should be pretty damn sad. :(

The only other thing I can think of right now is the end of Tokyo Babylon and all of X (its sequel of sorts). It's mostly depressing rather than sad, but there are certainly a few very sad moments too. Lots of deaths of important characters, and being shoujo, it's carried off with a lot of emotion.

Oh, and while (for some reason) the series doesn't seem very credible, Gundam Seed probably bought me close to tears as much as any other series, especially near the end (as well as with Nicol death period). :(

It's about a guy and girl who fall in love in high school...

then she gets into an accident and into a coma. The guy has moved on and is dating that girl's best friend, and he's become very apathetic. Both the best friend and he have become very depressed about the whole thing and gave up some promising futures and are trying to get by. But one day the girl wakes up... with short-term memory loss. The show is very, very dramatic (but in an almost realistic way) and very sad.

It's pretty much a love triangle about two best friends and a friend of theirs. I didn't like it that much though. If you are going to check it out, I'm just warning you that there is nudity.

I'm watching Hanbun No Tsuki Ga Noboru Sora and yeah it's sad.

That's one looong name.

Out of the ones I've watched so far, probaly AIR or Full moon wo Sagashite (I'm not sure if this a good or a bad ending)

Though AIR confused me a little. I cried at Full moon wo sagashite, and I neverrrr cry at an anime.

Gantz isn't really sad. A lot of people die but it really desensitizes you.

One Piece's flashback are the saddest stories I've seen in anime, but they're flashbacks, so that definitely lessens the impact (I've heard that they've made people cry though).

Nekomimi

AIR's ending will definatly make you cry unless your some kindof unfeeling monster xD. But some of the symbolism that plays heavily in the series especially towards the end lessens the impact for some...Or in my case increases its severity. :(

Elfen Lied was very sad. I'm halfway through Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien now and I can tell that it'll be really sad in the end episodes.

I think one of the saddest parts in any anime is Haku sacrificing himself for Zabuza and then Zabuza laying next to him while he dies.

Fullmetal Alchemist made me tear up a couple of times and it is overall a rather depressing series, in my opinion. Chrno Crusade's ending was truly heart wrenching but the series as a whole didn't impress me.

The saddest anime ever, however, is definitely Hotaru No Haka, followed quite closely by Sennen joyu.

Sorry, but what is KGNE?

I've cried, or gotten very emotional at:

Naruto eps 17,18,19. 109, 134.

Wolf's Rain final 4 eps.

Rurouni Kenshin Trust/Betrayal didn't make me cry but left me feeling empty.

Voices of a Distant star. Genius... Just genius.

I kinda wanted to get upset by FMA, but it was like sad moment ever 2 episodes and they were so randomly placed, like you tried getting upset about the death of a character, but right before that they had the death of a cat or something n ur just like :oh ????

And I know there was another but I just can't remember it.

ETA

I must be heartless, because while Grave of the Fireflies was tragic, I didn't exactly get too emotionally affected by it. Then again, maybe it's because the fact of why...

Seta and his sister died, because they weren't able to suck it up and just wait things out with their aunt who did admittedly have a lot of things to deal with.

I just didn't feel too much sympathy in that case, but I still felt sorry for them and what they went through. Great war movie, to be sure.

Anyway, while I've seen a lot of sad-as-hell anime that got me at moments (Evangelion and Gungrave certainly had its fair number of scenes), I can't really imagine anything depressing, and heartbreaking than Now and Then, Here and There. The first episode has something of an upbeat atmosphere, but from episodes two to thirteen, the final episode, you are constantly, and I emphasize CONSTANTLY emotional while watching it unfold. To call it brutal would be a serious understatement. What happens to each character is so simple, but powerfully effective and doesn't have any melodramatic moments in it. What all of the children go through just leaves you so damned depressed, and I don't think that I've heard such a tearful ending song for any other anime.

I can't imagine anyone who has watched this series not consider this the most depressing anime that they've ever seen. Hell, the only thing that is more depressing that I've seen is a movie called Johnny Got His Gun, which makes a tearful mark as my third favorite movie that I've ever seen.

For information on the series, check out ANN's information on Now and Then, Here and There. (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=287)

Hotaru no Haka ~~ Grave of fireflies:

Setsuko and Seita are brother and sister living in wartime Japan. After their mother is killed in an air raid they find a temporary home with relatives. Having quarreled with their aunt they leave the city and make their home in an abandoned shelter. While their father's destiny who was a soldier is unknown the two must depend on each other to somehow keep a roof over their heads and food in their stomachs. When everything is in short supply, they gradually succumb to hunger and their only entertainment is the light of the fireflies.

There are two unrivalled moments in anime for me.
Naruto:
The death of Zabuza/Haku. The moment where Zabuza cries was impossibly powerful, not to mention his badass charge at Gato(alot better in manga due to the decapitation). "Haku are you crying":cry
Cowboy bebop:
This series had it all. It could be fun, serious, badass, and emotional. Moments that stuck out were the moments after Vicious and spikes fight in the church, Vicious hearing the music box and giving off some emotion for once, Ed leaving, and of course the end of the series. I didn't feel anything during episode 25, or the beginning of 26, even Julia's death didn't effect me. However spike speaking with Jet and Faye, saying things that preluded death started to make me get a lump in my throat. And once he took off and real folk blues started playing you just get that feeling, knowing that is was the end. Also the shots of spike accompanied by the real folk blues gave off the aura of a man who had lost everything. From there it was emotionally badass up until the last, short simple yet powerful battle. "Bang" was where the shivers shot everywhere.... And the song blue was so beautiful and the lyrics were really perfect. And the vanishing star....... See you, space cowboy.

I would have to say the second Kenshin OVA, while I didn't ball my eyes out, I did get very choked up with the ending.

Saikano was close, specifically the sence with Akemi. Depressing is more like it.

A few more anime that got to me emotionally:

-- Air (The final three episodes were all effective bits of drama and was the most prominent representation of family throughout the entire series. Haruko's part was especially touching.)

-- Berserk (The final stretch of episodes as everything that the characters had aimed for up until then collapsed.)

-- Black Jack (Specifically the fifth and tenth episode of the OVA series. Episode five was one of the most brilliant animated episodes that I've seen, and while episode ten did have some melodrama, it was still quite emotional.)

-- Haibane Renmei (Reki's hardship throughout the whole anime was emotionally involving, though I never brought me to tears; it was nicely conceived without resorting to clichés.)

-- Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (A rather sad tale from start to finish and doesn't really let up at any point. Not only one of the most powerful animated movies that I've seen, but also one of the most powerful movies in general.)

-- Neon Genesis Evangelion (Episodes twenty-one to twenty-four were not only depressing with their content, but were also atmospherically drowning. From Misato, to Asuka, to Rei, and then in the fourth string of episodes, Shinji, you see all four of the main characters deconstructed and put through incredibly harsh situations.)

-- Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (Two certain characters' deaths always get to me, but the whole movie seemed rather desperate except until the final scene, but even then the optimism there was hidden and will be missed by many people just due to the brutality leading up to it, not to mention the setting of it.)

-- Now and Then, Here and There (Except for the first episode and some bits in episode eight, every moment in this series is the definition of depressing.)

-- Texhnolyze (Along with The End of Evangelion, it has the most beautiful and perfectly fitting ending that I've personally ever seen in any story. There are melancholic moments thrown about in the entire series, but the final episodes are exemplary examples of hopelessness, yet there is a certain beauty in it all. Also, the last scene (along with the aforementioned The End of Evangelion last scene), in addition to all of the build-up before it, had me completely in awe, not to mention being utterly choked up.)

There are a few more notables ones, but that about covers it from what I can recall offhand.
