Anyone got it ? I think it's great that we gamecube-owners finally get a decent RPG. Why should PS2 get everything  ?

It rox and its way over decent!

I wouldnt say way over decent. The story is predictible and weak, and as an RPG thats a bad thing to do. The fighting system is good for a hack um up game. It offers a wide variety of subquests and neat things to do (like title hunting) They try to instal replay value with the hole point system...but nothing can bring me to play it through all the way again. I practically did it all the first time through. Great game though. I just have high expectations.

Yeah the game was pretty predictable, but it had its shocking moment. Still this is probably one of my favorite games out there and I racked up 60 hours on it which is a good thing to me.

Oh man I have to wait until around December for it to come out over here. Why does everyone neglect Europe?! We always have to wait. I'm looking foward to the realtime multiplayer combat thing though, but I've heard the camera is quite dodgy when you have a few players playing.

Yep, I played it. It was so much fun, especially when with friends and siblings. If you have a little brother who you contently have to beat play anything, it's a great game just because of the multiplayer mode. Also I love the fact that you don't have to buy additional equipment for it except the extra controller, (I was afraid it was going to be like Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicals).
Storyline, is somewhat predictable, since that's how most RPGs are. I haven't had too many RPGs where I didn't see at least a few things coming. But what I like the most is that you can help change the predictablity in terms of relationships. If you don't like the kinda cliche Collette and Lloyd ending, you can be mean to Collete and have Lloyd become closer to any of the other characters. (Sheena and Lloyd is so adorable)

I loved this game. I wish that there had been more animated cut scenes though because the ones that were shown were awesome. Kratos, Zelos and Regal are my fave characters. I was so into this game that I played it for hours at a time and ended up beating it in 44 and a half hours! I hope they make a sequel, that'd be so awesome!

The best RPG oon the GCN so far. Until Golden Sun 3 comes out or Square releases a good FC game for GCN. But otherwise Tales of Symphonia was really well done. Yea, I wished they had more anime cutscenes and if the game was a little longer. Seemed kinda short even though it had 2 discs.

yeah, try being board and going after him at level 69-71 or so. that battle took an hour. But still wasn't too hard. All it took was 4 hit combo->StabbityStab technique->Ripped off version of terry bogards Power wave.
to dish out some damage. those powered up dark weapons made lloyd insanely powerful though.

Zelos is awsome. What i used to defeat Abyssion was that thing that half everyone's attack power (forgot what it was called, beat it in the summer and let a friend borrow it). It says 80 hours of gameplay, but i beat it in 64 hours and i did as many side quests that i could and leveled up to around 84. Anyway i say if you own a GameCube and like RPG's then you should buy (or at least rent) this game. Now SquareEnix needs to make a good Final Fantasy for the Cube.
*wail* I want to buy it, but it had to be spesially ordered ;_; *sniffle*

This game is just great! The story might not be that good (although it gets better at the end), but the fights are simply amazing! Especially if you play with your friends.
I played it through with two of my friends, I was playing as Presea and my friends were Lloyd and Genis. The funniest battle, by far, was against Abyssion, I think we were around lvl 60 when we challenged him. If I remember correctly it took us more than 40 minutes to take him down. ^^

03-22-2005, 04:51 PM
i thought it was a lot of fun, though genis reminds me a lot of kurama for some reason, maybe he'll go berserk in the future and turn into a demon O_o
and hurray for kratos!!!
(i haven't finished the game, yet, lol, i'm still basing this all on the first little bit!!)
but i love the battle setup. being able to attack like that and not have to wait for your turn is awesome. need more games like that, with better storylines...

Does anyone like this game? If you didn't bother to pick it up, here's a few reasons this game is worth your money for more than one play through.
This time around I'm enjoying Kratos even more than before, because this time I know all of his secrets for a fact instead of just a hunch. I managed to guess them all the first time around, but I wasn't 100% sure. Now it's fun to see both the hints I picked up as well as the ones I missed. Same goes for Zelos. Now, I HATE Zelos, expecially because he's supposed to be Krato's replacement and unlike Kratos, he's an arrogant bastard, but I'm picking up on all of his hints this time that I missed last time. I still managed to guess his secret, but not until right before it was revealed. Now I'm seeing some of the subtlties that I missed. I'm also taking the time to use all of my characters, instead of last time when I had one specific preferred party. And I'm trying to teach them the abilities they didn't get last time. For example, last time, Lloyd was S-type, this time, I'm going for T-type. It's pretty cool to watch them develop stuff they didn't have before. It puts a nice spin on the actual gameplay, giving the battles a nice replay value.
Speaking of the battle system, it's one of the few I enjoy. I'm not utterly thrilled with it, but usually I'm not one for random battles. But this game really puts a whole new spin on the battle system all together. There's different ex-skills to try and create and use, as I already said, their customizable attacks, the real time, usually a hassle, was done extremely well, and there's TONS of extra bonuses to fighting. For example, if Colette has learned the combo ex-skill "Item Finder", you get like 3 times the normal goodies at the end of the battle when she's in your party, which means more often they drop rare items that are good for either customizing or selling off for a good 1,000 Gald usually. Presea and I think Lloyd can learn an ex-skill that I don't recall the name at the moment, but it randomly increases their max HP after battles. That means every few battles, more meat to the HP. That's always a good thing.
And while we're on the subject of ex-skills, I should talk a bit about that as well. The level two personal is useful for almost all the characters. There are only a couple I don't use. Now, I wouldn't trade Zelos' or Presea's personal skill for anything. They are by far the most useful, and as such, the only ones I'll bother discussing. First, Zelos. He thinks he's hot stuff, and the girls fall for it every time. With Zelos' personal skill, every lady you talk to will forfiet an item or Gald. OUTRAGEOUSLY USEFUL. Once he gets that skill, which is easy, just equip him with a level two gem and set the skill to personal, you never have to buy any gels or life bottles or panacea bottles ever again. You get more items than that, but those are the most common, and generally the most useful. Fun thing about it, go out of the town, walk back in, get items all over again. They're different every time too. The same girl won't necessarily give out the same item. You can stock up pretty quick just by going in and out of a town. This comes in real handy when they give you things like Miracle Gels. I think those things are like 3,000 Gald a piece. Way too expensive. As for Presea, she has the personal ability to find food items in a dungeon. So as your strolling through the nearest dungeon, you hear a sound and a light flashes. Voila, you've picked up some food. Food is pretty expensive, and running out is always a downer. So this skill is really handy when in a dungeon, even if she's just picking up extras. The more goodies in a meal, the more HP and TP it restores. Hmm, I said only Zelos and Presea, but Regal's is worth mentioning too. Regal's is simple, and cost effective as well. (Notice a pattern? I'm cheap.) When buying things, the price is reduced to 90%, and when selling, up to 110%. Nice, simple, keeps Gald in my pocket. Gotta love it.
Wow, I suppose this is rather extensive... well, just a few more things to add. The replay value on this game is awsome. See, when you fight, you get something called Grade. It seems pointless and useless the first time through, but it definately is not. It's yet another thing that adds to the immense replay value of this game. When you beat the game, your Grade is counted (This means DON'T spend your Grade on customizing items or Ex Gems!!! ) and you're able to 'buy' things towards your new game. Things like Grade up (A MUST if you see things on the list you want but can't 'afford' ) double EXP, keep your Techs, Recipes, ect ect. It's really quite awsome. I didn't have enough grade to buy even a quarter of what I wanted, and so needless to say, I got Grade up. (I was too poor for double EXP, but I'll get it next time dammit! ) Even better for the replay value is the BAZILLION side quests, most of which you don't even catch on to your first time through. I'd guess to do them all would literally take hundreds of hours. I'm going to do some this time through, but I think I'll really hit the gaming my third time through. Right now, my goal is to get enough grade to buy... well, everything on the list. I'm about 25 hours in, a little less than half. Yes, this game is over 50 hours, normally. My first time through I clocked at 56 hours.
Well, I guess that's all for now. So there's my random impression of Tales of Symphonia Replay Value! I didn't talk about the plot at all really, but that's where the spoilers come in, so I kept it clean. Yay for no spoilers! And even more Yay for a game that I can actually talk in depth about without having to talk about plot! I'll tell you, that's a first. And I barely scratched the surface. Don't have it? BUY IT. Totally awsome game, really amazing. The plot is actually a tiny bit lacking, but you won't notice it over all the fun you're busy having. Besides, the plot, lacking as it may be, is fun, too. But the ending was disappointing.

Trolls can be really annoying... it'd be nice if you actually gave a reason.
Anyways, I've been playing ToS for 100+ hours now... though haven't played much recently. Definitely a good game(but not "great"), has a lot of replay value, and nice twists and I'm always a fan of RPGs where decisions you make alter things somewhat. Highest combo so far I've gotten is 104...

Wow, 104 in combo is great... compare to me.. I only got 90 (with computers)

its a great game :D
i like it but i allready have troubles with boss figths >_< and i'm not soo far in progress
my strategy is prolly wrong as hell
Am I the only one who found the game somewhat unpredictable? Well some things you can probably figure out like Kratos being Lloyd's dad though that was still had an element of surprise. Then there's the whole whose on whose side, and the real goal of the various orginization also were somewhat unpredictable IMO.

Why is it always that the main character (Lloyd) always is stupid at first and then smart? This happen alot in anime, like Naruto.
Thats called "character development".
In another forum I saw something that said there would be a ToS OVA. I'll post it when I find it.

Oh and I got my copy when it first came out...for Tales of destiny 2. As for Tales of Destiny 1, I got it used in a bargin bin at Game stop. I was so freakin lucky that day. I found that, Breath of fire 3, and super puzzle fighter 2 turbo all in the same day at that place....oh and they're for the PSone. The tales series are the foundation for the Star Ocean series btw (battle system wise, not story wise, since they're from two different companies).

Awsome RPG, awsome game. If you have a cube and like RPGs, this is a must! Everything about this game is great!
If you're cheap and don't have a cube or moneys, play MMBN6 (emulate or buy, either or), it's probably the best(or second to best if you're in love with MMBN 2 or 3's style) in the series.

Actually, I AM a tales fan, and I must tell you all now. This was the worst of the batch
IMO, you should all play the SNES version of Tales of Phantasia. That game had a really good storyline and characters. No cliched messes anywhere. The graphics sprites sucked, but it was great. The dubbed GBA game was horrible because they symphoni-ized it and killed the oringinal characters and story...
Another really good Tales game is Destiny and Destiny2 (Not the american destiny 2. The american destiny 2 is really Tales of eternia)
Those were awsome too.
And you guys should really check out tales of the abyss. People who played ToS Says that Tales of the abyss blows it out of the water COMEPLETELY. The battle system is more designed. The characters are totally oringinal (Though the charcter design sucks alot, the personalities and back stories rock though) and the story rocks my socks.
The battle is fully 3-D and has new sets and they actually gave everyone hi-ougis again (Special moves) I have skits subbed on my youtbe account, and I have a few Hi-ougis too. You should also browse around for ANime cut scenes and stuff. The game will be reaching the U.S.A In fall/early winter. Or you could just import it :D Here is my youtube videos to see the mentioned stuff.

decided to post a review on tales of symphonia
Oh I dont hate it, it was my first one, I just played better o_o
Well, here is some reasons
1: The characters and story aren't that good, medicore, that it is! :O
Why? It borrows way too many plots from its previous games. Eternia, destiny, phantasia (Though it is phantasia's prequel, so that slides a little). And the characters are just plain...unoringinal. There is nothing about them that sticks out, nothing that's memorable. Why? It's been done before by the other tales game which WERE able to make everyone differernt, but Tos failed to do so.
The characters... bleh.
Lloyd the annoying preacher who CONSTANTLY contradicts himself! For the whole freaking game! The only time his preaching seems right is for the damn moment! Then later he contradicts it!And he rather make the world blow up then let collette die! Screw friendship damn it, Mithos summed it up well!
"No life goes for the sake of dying? What are those exspheres you're wearing?"
OWNED.
NEXT
Collette the slow innocent mary-sue of a heroine. Her tripping was funny ONCE. But then they used it too much! Then in battle...she still sucked. Evryone treated her like god, and that was annoying. What the hell have she done for you? She's just a FAILED Chosen. She just made the game longer with all the kidnapping and all the treasure hunting for EXSPERE PIECES, for her damn crystal DX Without her, the game would've been quick! She does gets points for being memorable for being an annoying character who tripped too much.
Genis was awsome at first, but then he gone emo for Mithos 'betrayal'. Man, he really was going in a really good direction. He was sarcastic, smart, and an asshole to slow/stupid people! His skits were funny because of the faces and the means remarks, but this is when his character has fallen.
"Mithos, lets be best friends FOR-EVER!!"
Right there damn it, right there. Then he frowns, moans and whines Mithos' name, the whole lot. Then he too, becomes as preachy as Lloyd, but for Mithos.
Raine was simply awsome. For her ruin modes were halarious, and the fact she was violent and stuff. I mean, who didn't laugh or thank her for slapping someone for being stupid? Or just simply hit them out of anger? That was great. But that's all she had going for her though.
Kratos... WHY DOES EVERYONE LOVE THIS GUY?! He's all... "Blah... I am all serious and I think I know everything. I brood over being a sucky parent and I am slave to a child who has weird ideals."
A friend of mines helped me realised that, Kratos could've taken the eternal sword and left Mithos o_o I mean really... he IS the pact of oringin o_O And... he really isn't as bad ass and oringinal as everyone says he is... He contradicts himself too much, as does Lloyd
oh and a Judas/Leon rip-off :] Sept Judas/Leon pwnz
Zelos was awsome (to me) cause he was a funny perverted asshole. Though he gets annoying for many people. His back story had no relervence to the plot and really wasn't all that interesting. he was just comic relief. A selfish narcissist, who was also an idiot. Yay. My main fighter.(Who i played as)
Regal: KRATOS REPLACE, KRATOS REPLACE!! Their past is exactly the freaking same! That adds to why the characters aren't oringinal! They both had weird/forbindon love, then all of a sudden their wives get screwed over and turn into monster they had to kill. Then they 'punish' thamselves and freaking brood 24/7. He is Kratos clone that uses his feet.
Presea: EMPTY SHELL. She is really, really blank. She has the least personality out of all of them. Because she was trapped in an exsphere, woooo. Alot of people got screwed by those lame marbles... So, even after being saved, she is still a shell. Oh, and before someone uses the 'axes are oringinal!" defence on me (it happened before) Mary(Tales of destiny), Loni(Tales of destiny2), Barbatos(Tales of destiny 2), and Cless(Tales of phantasia) used axes.
Yggdrasill: Yggyman..yggyman... WHY ARE YOU TAKING DHAOS' COOL POINTS? Everyone goes 'Dhaos looks like Yggdrasill 'Dhaos copies Yggdrasill 'Dhaos is taking his foot steps'. Well you're wrong. Let's get this straight, Dhaos had the whole angel thing way back on tales of phantasia on the PSX(Play station 1 remake of tales of phantasia on the super nintendo). His wings are green and sticks up. Not only did Yggdrasill nearly have the same look as Dhaos' angel form, on the ps2 he took Dhaos' infamous "Dhaos laser" attack and called it "Yggdrasill laser" . Yes, it's supposed to be a nifty 'ooh cameo' but too many tos fans go "omg Dhaos coppied!'
okay, now onto his character.
SPOILER He was once a hero, who cares. He went insane when his sister died, and was all: "OMG I HATE HUMANS!BSTARD!!" So he made chosen after chosen to come up to be a vessle for Martel. They all died like wusses except Collette. So when Martel FINALLY gets in something. She's like "Mithos, wtf are you doing? Stop it and get a life."
So Mithos is like. "OMg wtf! She didn't say that! She didn't! I'm gonna get all pissy and break more stuff! And get another body!! A world for mah sista and me!!"
As you can tell by now, there isn't much to his character, back story, motive, etc. He's just the main villian guy.
Sheena: First, Suzu>Sheena. Sheena lacks any ninja qualities. She's clumsy and very open to people. Not only that, SHE DOESN'T HAVE NINJUTSU! She attacks with cards! She can't summon toads! And she really can't summon! You gotta wait for the chick to be in overdrive! Why does a ninja element summon anyway?? All she was, was a person who denyed her crush for Lloyd and enhance Zelos' perv acts...and fanservice. She was also a tribute to Suzu anyway, look at her successor outfit.

The gameplay was rather easy, and on Mania too. The only fun I had was killing abbysession and the ToE characters o_O Also, I did went "OMG MUST GET THEM ALL" crazy on tos and replayed 8 times... but then I just played better. It does get points for bringing me into the series in the first place though. Yeah...

Lol, when I first saw Anko, I was like, she looks like Sheena. Anyways oreo, the problem with your reasons is its just your opinion, your opionin would have been more meaningful if ToS didn't do so well in other forums and thats how you just think of it, I like how everything was done in it, I can't imagine it being different. From reading your reasons, it doesn't look like you understand why some characters have that personality. I think you played too many games and ToS was one of the last ones you played with storylines like that. Really though, your reasons are just how you felt about the game while others felt differently.

Soooo you're saying since so many people like it, my opinion means nothing? That's like saying every damn one loves final fantasy and kingdom hearts. And if they don't they mean nothing :l
I like how everything was done in it, I can't imagine it being different. From reading your reasons, it doesn't look like you understand why some characters have that personality.
I understood everyone completely. They were poorly made and executed. Since most characters were poorly excuted, the good part of them died out instantly.
I think you played too many games and ToS was one of the last ones you played with storylines like that.
That's my point. IT RIPS OFF TOO MUCH OF ITS BRETHREN! When the previous games were able to come up with great stories, great characters, and so on without ripping one another off :l
Really though, your reasons are just how you felt about the game while others felt differently.
No kidding its about how I felt. And I have facts in there to back me up instead of useless bashing that makes no sense. Others felt differerntly because they hadn't played/researched the previous tales games. They also dismiss the previous ones because they're 2-D (As in on the playstation, PS2, etc) and 'crap graphics' 'oldschool'. Well I hate to break it to those people, ToS' graphics were just as crap. Stiff character movement, repeated hand cycles, etc. It w as just annoying. Blarg
WAsn't that good, after I played Tales of phantasia. Symphonia is just another copy or part of the tales series.

Man I loved this game. My absolute favorite aspect was the relationship system which changed certain aspects of the story depending on how much the other characters liked Lloyd.
If Kratos liked Lloyd the best, then he would rejoin the party at a certain point when normally he would remain an NPC.
If Sheena liked Lloyd the best, then she would become Lloyd's love interest when normally Lloyd and Colette are paired off and Sheena's crush goes unrequited.
Sure, the main plot remained unaffected, but I enjoyed these variations emmensly.

oreokids, you've got good reasons and I understand and agree with a good part of them, but for most ToS is the first Tales game anyone's played. It certainly was for me. I think it's pretty good, apart from the story. Unless people go out and play the other To's, then people aren't going to agree with you. ToS was simply very good, and if it's the worst of the Tales, then the rest must be FF/DQ/KH caliber.

The firsts barely get any reconigtion because
A: They were japanese, but ToP has been translated on the SNES
B: People ignored for their 2D chibi graphics (I.E Tales of eternia dubbing, and Tales of destiny1 dubbing)

How do you make Sheena have the best relationship? I want her to be it, but i always end up with Colette....Similar to getting Barret in FF7, get a guide and insult Collette as often as possible. Unfortunately this will raise Raine real high, so you have to try to take her down as well. You may have to use two games in order to bring Collette and Raine low enough and Sheena high enough.

At the Flanoir scene, we can learn so much about Zelos that we never knew. It reminds me of one of the Naruto characters. Its not really hard to get Sheena to have the most interest in you, you even have 3 chances too unless shes the fourth person to like you the most. Use a guide anyways just incase it could be more difficult for you, Ha-ri.

ToS was great... Yeah sure it did ripoff some things from other Tales games... but then again that shouldn't matter because Namco made the Tales series... It's their choice to do what they want with them... Anywho... I enjoyed this game alot I still play it even after beating it 10 or so times especially with my friends! Some of the characters had their ups and downs but they were still pretty kick ass especially Sheena (even if she does look like Anko and has no Ninjutsu... but the cards are an ancient Japanese art so that makes her somewhat of a ninja) and Colette wasn't bad either.... She got kidnapped alot because noone knew she was a failed Chosen! Mithos.... sure the guy was psycho but he had a bad past life... Kratos was sad because he had lost his wife Anna and was devestated that everyone had discriminated Mithos and Martel... Kratos didn't leave Mithos side even though he didn't agree with his ideals until he believed there was no other alternative to stop him except killing Mithos.... Lloyd was a good character as well.... He wanted Colette to save the world until he found out the truth... then he wanted to save her AND save the world as well... He didn't abandon either.... Oreo I'm sorry to say but I think even you would choose a close friend over the world and also try to save the world if you believed there was another way... I'll shut up now I've talked to long

How do you make Sheena have the best relationship? I want her to be it, but i always end up with Colette....
Yeah, it can be a bit difficult if you don't have a guide. Basically, be nice to Sheena and always choose her to do something when you have the chance. It's very hard to keep Colette's relationship level down because she pretty much likes EVERYTHING you do. The good thing is that you don't have to worry about who likes Lloyd the best. Just make sure the person you want is one of the top four party members who does. They'll be the ones left behind at Flanoir. They'll come one after the other to ask Lloyd to go out with them. Keep refusing to go out until the person you want asks you.
Anyway, the key to getting the person you want is the skit points, or those glowing circles on the overworld map. Those will significantly increase or decrease a party member's relationship level with Lloyd. Instead of doing them right away, put off doing them until it's time to get a doctor from Flanoir. THEN do the skit points and it will be MUCH easier to control who you want to be paired off with Lloyd. I kept getting Colette at Flanoir until I did her skit points and was mean to her. When I went back, she didn't even show up in the top four.
Some people have some trouble with Sheena's skit points so I'll tell you that the rule of thumb is if she doesn't get super-pissed at you, then you made the right choice.
Here's a list of the skit points taken from the Ending's Guide from GameFAQS:
Colette: Sylvarant - S of Ossa Trail (in desert)
Sylvarant - E of Asgard Ranch (north of mountains)
Sylvarant - W of Hima (around mountains)

There's also a guide that shows the numerical values to the relationship changes to every choice in the game. It can be found here. (http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/gamecube/file/tales_of_symphonia_affection.txt)
Oh, and like Kakashi19 said, equip her with Black Onyx and I should add that you should let the A.I. take over in this fight.
Enjoy! :thumbs

ToS is still good... but I kind of like Tales of Legendia (and Phantasia now that I've played it) better... they just seem to be somewhat better then Symphonia (I'm not dissing Symphonia it's still great! and it was also my first!)

How many people had trouble getting Kratos to come back at the end of the game. It took me 3 tries to do it

Heh, heh, kind of an old thread eh? Anyway, I really love this game. In my top 10 list, it's in 3rd place, after RE4, 2nd place, and Zelda:OoT, my number one game. I spent like, 100 hours playing the game in just 1 week during last year's summer.

This is still my favorite Tales game ever. I've played so many but it never compares to ToS. I thought that Tales of the Abyss might do it for me but I was wrong.

Lloyd is such a cheese in this game,Sword rain is all you need.

:rofl :rofl :rofl
Completly disagree. Though ToS is a good game I think its terribly overated. Its the most mainstream tales game. The story was average at best, and I can't go back to to the gameplay after Abyss.
